Windmill Training started in 2005 to help fill the gap in Developing Programmes and in Teaching Vocational, Basic and Life Skills for Mental Health Service Users – in hospitals, supported housing projects and secure units. Our successful approach to working with service users and the mental health sector led to us working with other industries who also wanted to develop their knowledge and understanding of mental ill health. The experienced staff at DLC Training in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, have been providing high quality, certified safety training courses for over 25 years. Our company was started by a group of instructors who wanted to do something different: focus on smaller, more responsive classes, and provide important, but less popular and underserved courses. As well, one of our key goals was to provide a training environment for students to learn at their own pace. Things have evolved over time. We have taught courses that are near and dear to the hearts of our instructors, and have allowed instructors to develop and perfect their courses and teaching skills. Along the way we tried not to reinvent the wheel. We’ve become certified Canadian Red Cross training partners and work with the Canadian Safety Council to train our defensive driving, babysitting and home alone courses. We maintain high standards by having actual teachers help do the training. Our director of training has 2 Masters of Education degrees. Early on we realized that there was a need for people to be able to acquire their certifications or licensing in many fields. This led us to becoming a partner with Prometric, a world leader in technology-enabled testing and assessment solutions. We have thus created a computer lab to allow for a secure proctored environment. We went one step further and started another lab for others.

DeWolf Bushcraft has been created to provide a woodland retreat for Emergency Services workers and NHS staff dealing with the moral injuries and strains of work and home life. Tucked away in the Lake District, it is a sanctuary for those looking to use woodland, mountains and nature as a place to connect, adjust and heal. Originally a Paramedic in the London Ambulance Service, I eventually relocated to the Lake District after having to deal with my own moral injuries and burn-out. Reconnecting with nature and the mountains has enabled me to heal and build strength again. As such, I wish to share these opportunities with others and offer an invitation and a welcome to all who could benefit from time in the outdoors. To add to this, I have spent over fifteen years honing my Bushcraft and primitive skills. Nowadays, I work as a Paramedic Practitioner in Primary as well as a Bank paramedic for the Northwest Ambulance Service. I am a member of Kendal Mountain Rescue Team and when I have the opportunity I work as a medic supporting a wide variety of events.

The charity started in 1987 when Peter Mumford, then Bishop of Truro recognised the need to find a positive way to engage disadvantaged young people, to ensure they unlocked their potential. Soon after, The Bishops Forum was created and the charity was founded with Goodygrane Activity Centre growing from abandoned granite quarries overlooking Falmouth bay. One of the earliest memories was of a child abseiling down a rock face in a wheelchair, being watched by a young person who’d been excluded from school. That person went on to be an instructor and today, we continue to see Cornwall’s most vulnerable children realise their own potential. Our outdoor education centre now supports ~4,000 children and young people a year through charity programmes, tailored school residentials and NCS. Our mission is to support children and young people on a journey of positive change. We give them the tools to identify and overcome their own challenges, and give them an overall sense of empowerment. We are passionate about enabling them to overcome barriers to education, work and social interaction. We provide: Charity programmes that support those facing life’s toughest challenges. School residentials that build communication, teamwork and resilience. NCS programmes that teach people skills and get them excited about the future. At 14-16 (Key Stage 4) we provide a core education in GCSEs English, Maths and Double Science as well a specialist technical route in either in Engineering, Health Sciences or Digital Technology (from September 2022). In the Sixth Form (Key Stage 5) you can continue the same three pathways following courses up to an equivalent of 3 A Levels. The primary focus of our UTC is to provide students with an educational experience which prepares them for employment in either engineering, health or the world of digital technology. These three industries provide huge employment opportunities for young people when they leave school or university. A UTC education is built upon the principles of employability and the skills required to be successful at work. What makes our education pathways different is that our curriculum is built to work in partnership with employers. A range of industrial and university partners provide experiences for students which stretch beyond the school setting. South Devon UTC opened in 2015 as an engineering centre with specialist equipment which enriches and enhances the educational experience for students. Since March 2021 the UTC has become part of Education South West, a large multi academy trust stretching across South Devon. This new partnership has resulted in significant investment to develop facilities and provide new pathways in Health Sciences from September 2021 and Digital Technology from 2022.

Since 2000, NALA has been using television, radio, print, telephones and the internet to provide educational opportunities to people who want to improve their literacy. We operate a Tutoring Service, providing tutor support over the phone and internet. We also manage an eLearning website www.learnwithnala.ie where people can have their skills assessed across a number of areas and then be prescribed an individual learning plan to improve these areas. We raise awareness of literacy services We raise awareness of literacy services through national awareness campaigns. We have produced eleven TV series in association with RTE and national TV, Radio and Cinema advertising campaigns. NALA operate a Freephone support line that is staffed by experienced operators who can identify callers’ needs and advise them on free services nationwide. This includes tuition in 120 local adult education centres or NALA’s Tutoring Service where they tutor people over the phone. We advance adult literacy policy through research We work in partnership with government departments, organisations, tutors and learners to advance adult literacy policy. This work is supported by evidence-based research which examines international best practice, reviews Irish policy and produces recommendations to support people with unmet literacy needs. Our policy work aims to influence Government policy and lobby for appropriate actions and funds to improve literacy and numeracy levels in Ireland.
