I think it is very important for clients to understand my background. I am first and foremost the mother of three children, one of whom, my daughter, is very dyslexic. I know from first-hand experience the pain, frustration and loneliness of being the parent of a bright child who is totally failing academically and for whom there is very little support from the teaching world. I was fortunate, in that I was working in the world of education when my daughter was diagnosed, and even more fortunate that one Headmaster out of many approached was “willing to have a go”. The final outcome for us was successful with a daughter gaining both GCSEs, A Levels and eventually after a huge amount of effort on her part a degree in the subject that she was determined to study. The outcome for other children with dyslexia and other SpLD needs is not always so successful. Having travelled extensively both in Europe, China, Korea, Japan, the Gulf States and Africa recruiting students for boarding in the United Kingdom, it has become apparent to me that although there are some exceptionally good international schools, many of them have limited resources to help children with dyslexia. Not only do they have limited resources in their learning support departments, often a fast turnaround in teachers, and importantly often the child’s stay in any one school is relatively short dependent on the parents posting, in addition the size of the school plays a significant role for children with SpLD needs. A dyslexic child often has issues of anxiety, and a large school with in many cases a school population in excess of 1000 students can have serious implications for these children. Children with dyslexia need more than most continuity of care and education, without it they are unlikely to thrive.

Women face ongoing, multiple transitions as they navigate their intertwining family and professional worlds. I create a supported, safe space which allows women to devote the time and energy they need for themselves. In a supported space where my clients are given permission to be their true, imperfect, unique selves, free of judgement, blame and expectation. In this space my clients are more effectively able to plot the course to their own happiest life. In being able to truly connect with what we value most we are more able to be brave and be empowered to follow our own unique path to positive change. I have particularly enjoyed my recent work with the UK Armed Forces Spouses in a Personal Development programme I designed for them, as they are not only facing multiple transitions, but also have the added stresses which comes with having a serving spouse. Becoming a coach I hold both a Bachelor of Science Degree with honours (Monash University, Melbourne) and a Graduate Diploma of Environmental Management (Deakin University, Melbourne), I spent over a decade making a difference in the environmental sustainability field in both Australia and the UK. Empowering groups and individuals through facilitation, I made a natural transition to the coaching world, and undertook research into the impact of combining sound facilitation techniques with coaching. I use this very powerful combination to create bespoke group coaching and training programmes for my clients. These programmes alongside one to one coaching inspire my clients to reach their full potential in any direction they choose: career transition, creating space for their own wellbeing, focusing on family or pursuing lifelong goals. My depth of global experience across many sectors such as policy, strategic planning and on the ground action informs my already systemic way of thinking. Wide travels combined with expat experiences on three continents have nurtured my empathy and curiosity. I take every opportunity to be involved in projects that will make a real difference to people’s lives.

Over the last 40 years we have developed a contextual approach to legal education which avoids treating the law as if it can be separated from other aspects of society. Students examine the impact of economic, cultural and political change on law and consider how it affects life beyond the court-room and the lawyer's office, as well as studying legal judgments and statutes. We also pride ourselves on providing excellent teaching. A significant number of colleagues have received a Warwick Award for Teaching Excellence – Dallal Stevens in 2011, James Harrison in 2011, Gary Watt in 2009 and Paul Raffield in 2008; in addition, Philip Kaisary and Jane Bryan received commendations in 2015 and 2014 respectively, and James Harrison received the Butterworth Award for Teaching Excellence in 2011. A number of our postgraduate research students have also received the equivalent award – Tim Dodsworth in 2013 and Adam Slavny (now an Assistant Professor) in 2012, with Natalie Byrom being commended in 2014. The HEA has also awarded National Teaching Fellowships (NFT) to Paul Raffield and Gary Watt in recognition of their outstanding achievements in teaching. Since there are only 500 NTFs across the UK as a whole, and 9 at Warwick, we are proud to host two of them. We encourage a comparative and international perspective on law which influences our undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
