Work Skills Learning was established in 2005. We teach children, young people and adult students in different settings. We enable them to develop new skills and achieve qualifications to secure their entry into the world of work. At Work Skills Learning all learners are valued as individuals, and we use innovative ideas and practices to maximise their potential. Children & Young People Aged 16 – 25: Work Skills Learning provides a range of educational opportunities for children and young people facing barriers to their education. Our provisions are co-educational and cater for those who may have special educational needs associated with communication and interaction, cognition and learning, and/or social, emotional and mental health difficulties. Adult Learners: Work Skills Learning offers a variety of accredited courses for those looking to gain recognised skills qualifications acquired whilst working in their sector or for those just starting out on a new path. All courses aim to boost the confidence and improve the skills of course participants. Work Skills Learning works with a variety of partners on multiple sites across London. Our Past Work Skills Learning was founded in 2005 by Dayo Adeagbo. From 2000-2005 Dayo was the Head of Education at Feltham Young Offenders, responsible for providing education for children aged 11-17 and 18-21. In 2006 Work Skills Learning started providing academic and vocational courses for children and young adults. Another major development was our partnership with Hackney Learning Trust and The Urswick School, which continues to the present day, where we teach adult classes on Saturday mornings. Work Skills Learning has delivered a wide range of courses, to communities across Hackney. One of the most significant developments has been our work to train teaching assistants. Our Present We have extended our work with Local Authorities with the aim of helping as many children and young people as possible. We work closely with each child to ensure that they can play a full part in society and to give them the additional skills to move forward with their lives. We have facilities to deliver a wide curriculum from Entry Level to GCSE and beyond, as well as accredited skills-based courses, including an Arts & Crafts facility, music, design and ICT, all designed to give our students the best possible chance in gaining new qualifications. We are in our 10th year of delivering adult courses for individuals who wish to establish a career as a teaching assistant. This is offered to all schools, which enables us to train those who are already in the workforce, helping them to achieve career progression, using our specialism in SEN to support their learning. We have outstanding specialists who deliver the course with us. To date we have taught over 600 students, many of whom are now working in schools across London. This has been life changing for many of those who have studied with us.

Janome UK

JANOME Corporation, popularly known as Janome, (pronounced: Ja – No -Mey), has been synonymous with quality sewing machines for over a century. In 1936, the company acquired its first mass production factory for sewing machines, starting out in Japan and now also with manufacturing plants in Thailand and Taiwan. Janome are proud of being the No.1 sewing machine manufacturer in the world and export products to more than 100 countries worldwide. Japanese entrepreneur Yosaku Ose founded the PINE sewing machine factory on October 16, 1921. He took the conventional oblong ‘shuttle-type’ bobbin and replaced it with a round bobbin. The innovative design improved efficiency and speed of the traditional sewing machine significantly. The new bobbin soon gained ground, and users affectionately called it Janome meaning ‘the Snake’s eye’ in Japanese. The name stuck, eventually becoming an official trademark JANOME in 1935 and formally adopted as the company name Janome Sewing Machine Co., Ltd., in 1954, changing to JANOME Corporation in October 2021 at its 100th Anniversary. Established October 1st, 1968 Janome UK Ltd. started to trade in 1969 as New Home Sewing Machine Co Ltd. As part of the globalisation of the Janome Group, it changed its name to Janome UK Ltd. in the mid 1990’s. Janome is now the brand leader in the UK with an extensive range of sewing machines and overlockers. Janome sewing machines are designed for ease of use to encourage all levels of sewing. Over 2 million Janome machines have been sold in the UK, with over 60 million sold worldwide. Renowned for quality & reliability at affordable prices Janome’s aim is to provide customers with an unrivalled level of service. The Janome Training School in Stockport, offering Masterclass sewing courses, is testament to their commitment to customer service and support. Since the earliest days of founding Janome products have been at the cutting edge of sewing technology. Janome was the first to develop a computerised machine for home use (the Memory 7, in 1979), the first to offer professional style embroidery to the home market (the Memory Craft 8000, in 1990) and the first to offer a long-arm quilting machine for home use (the Memory Craft 6500P, in 2003), the latest models now have up to 280mm (11 inches) of arm space, removable AcuFeed Flex dual feed, and a high resolution LCD touch screens. Janome believes that its customers have the right to expect that its products will provide them with truly aspirational levels of quality and value without exploiting the people who work for our suppliers. WQHair extends the deep passion of Waqqas, who stepped into the industry at the young age of 20. Starting his career in 2002 as a hairdresser, he knew this would only be the beginning of a unique career path in the hairdressing industry. What started as a part-time job as a hairstylist in a local salon grew into a lifelong dream to bring a higher level of service to clients. As his skills grew, so did his passion to enhance his training and education in across many areas of the hairdressing industry. That’s where Waqqas was introduced to the Flagship Toni and Guy Academy, where he completed a six-week advanced cutting course. The in-depth training, and his apparently innate talent, lead to the next step in his career path as he took a job with the Academy. Through his work for the Toni and Guy Academy, Waqqas continued to build his skill set, working in the Midlands and London. As he continued to advance his career, his next undertaking would lead him to become an Art Director who offered exclusive services to clients. That’s where he stepped into a new level of success- adding celebrities to his expanding list of clientele. Screenshot 2021-10-11 at 16.10.47 ezgif.com-gif-maker (20) Working on clients opened the door for his entrance into the fashion industry. It was here that Waqqas began his working relationship with L’Oreal Professional. He collaborated with the company to offer hairdressing services for photoshoots and fashion shows. This lead to one of the most memorable moments in his career thus far- working at the London Fashion Week for several years. In 2007, Waqqas returned to the Midlands where he would even further his training and education. As he put his skills to work in a salon setting, he began to teach and manage a range of courses required for hairdressers working in the UK and Denmark. In 2013, his training and education would lead him to his current position in the industry. Waqqas trained as a wig maker. This expansion of his expertise would lead him closer to his career goals-bringing a higher level of service to the clients he was so passionate to serve. With a personal experience in the journey of hair loss, Waqqas wanted to help bring his clients a regained confidence through his new skill set. 1. A TOTALLY NEW APPROACH TO LEARNING PIANO Your teacher is a multi-award winning international pianist Stephen Ridley, who taught himself piano from the age of 2 before starting formal training at 11. He discovered in his early years, through much trial and error, a completely unique way to learn piano and understand music, which involved breaking down learning piano into 55 key steps, each as simple and time consuming as brushing your teeth, and that when properly guided through these in an exact correct order, mastering each one in turn, that they would inevitably end up achieving success. 2. BUILDING ON WHAT YOU ALREADY CAN DO Because we’re only ever teaching one simple step at a time, in a very easy gradient, it means you only ever do something you CAN do, you’re never doing something you can’t. We simply take what you can already do, such as wiggle your finger, or learn a simple piece of data, and we build on that, one very simple ability at a time. In this way, you end every single lesson with a win and an improvement. This is important, as the only reason people give up is due to failure and lack of wins. We keep you winning, because when you are always winning, you will never give up! And in a very short time, you’ll ‘accidentally’ just end up knowing how to play! 3. FOCUSING ON PRACTICAL ABILITY This is about making pianists who understand music and can play. Gone are most of the technical words, gone is the latin technology (we believe it’s ineffective to teach in Latin given that nobody speaks Latin anymore!), and gone is anything that is not directly necessary for a mastering of the subject of music and the practical skill of playing piano. We want to make artists who can play, not people who sound smart at dinner parties (although we do still teach the full subject of music theory within the course, so you’ll sound very smart telling people all about Syncopated Rhythmic Subdivision, but more importantly, you’ll know what it is used for and how to DO it!). "My goal is to make one million artists, to give people the gift I’ve got, and to give them the enormous freedom, joy and depth that this skill gives me.” The Piano Masterclass is a complete guide to take ANYONE to becoming a pianist fast. The course takes just 3 minutes per day over 3-12 months, depending on study schedule, making it 150X faster than traditional methods. And takes anyone, of any age from ‘I’ve never touched a piano before’, to having a full understanding of the subject of music and being able to play piano, read and write music and learn any song, and develop an emotional connection to music, rather than just an intellectual one.

Essex

Encouraged as a small child by an artistic mother, I always sketched family members and pets, being able to capture a good likeness. From school through to college, my ability to draw became apparent and was recognised throughout my home town of Colchester in Essex. I had taken to pastels after years of painting in watercolour. The transition happened when working on a portrait….. "With watercolours I couldn't keep the smooth texture of the skin and the more I worked at it, the rougher the 'skin' got. Frustrated, I picked up a box of pastels that I'd had from college and almost closed my eyes as I chalked over the face I'd been working on for hours, cringing with the fear of having to throw the whole picture in the bin…. I smudged it over with my finger. The result was amazingly smooth and definitely 'skin' like. I put away the watercolours and invested in many shades of quality pastels". In 1997 and keen to enter into the art world, I offered my services to organisations to produce promotional portraits which came with good media coverage and helped my business catapult within its first year. I was introduced to various artists and teachers and was offered a place to work alongside Royal portrait artist Richard Stone who had admired my work through the local press. In 2003 I took up teaching art within local clubs and private classes, holding exhibitions and encouraging 11 to 16 year olds to develop their artistic talents with workshops using different mediums. From 2008, I had the immense pleasure of working with Colchester Zoo in Essex when I became their Artist in Residence. From holding art classes in the Zoo and working with children during the school holidays to portray their favourite animals, one of my greatest adventures was to work closely with the Zoo's great managerial team on their 'Stand Tall' project for their 50th anniversary. This saw many local artists give up their time to design and create personal works of art on 2.5m giraffe sculptures. These were then displayed around Colchester and even took a tour to London's South Bank before they came back to the Zoo for auction. It was with much excitement to see one of my giraffes (Big Catrina) sell to the highest bidder at £6800. Developing very unique drawing skills, I have helped students from all over the world with many varying art abilities to accomplish their artistic dreams. With a limited palette of chalks, and a vast experience in pastel application, my teaching took me to places I hadn't even dreamed of. Constantly moving forward and learning new ways to pass on my skills, I would say that teaching students of all ages is in my blood now. It has become a passion to show others the beauty of this versatile medium.

Self Defence for the Soul

self defence for the soul

Last week I was having a few doubts about some decisions that I’d really been sure of before. But after taking some time for reflection, I recognized that several lies had infiltrated my thinking, tearing me down with subtle accusations. In fact, those decisions that I’d already made were from the Lord, and He confirmed them again. Clearly, it was time to examine my spiritual defenses. I am finding that everything I do related to taking a team back to Haiti next month is being fought by the enemy. Here are some mandatory responses to spiritual warfare – I hope you will take action in your battle as well: Stay Alert: We are at war, so as Howard Hendricks says, don’t be surprised that you’re being shot at. We are admonished to be self-controlled and alert, for our enemy “prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8.) Take Cover: Put on the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) and walk in truth, practice righteousness and exercise your faith. Stand firm and pray! If it’s been more than one week since you’ve reviewed this passage, read and pray through it right now. Fight back: Are you living in a museum, with your sword hanging on the wall in display? That’s exactly what you’re doing if you leave your Bible on the shelf. The Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12, emphasis added.) A sword is not a defensive barrier – it’s a weapon of assault – which is why it is sharp and piercing. How prepared are you when it comes to self-defense of your soul? Are you a white belt? A black belt? Something in between? Keep up the regular protection of your heart, mind, spirit and soul. Here are some questions I ask myself to keep alert and engage in combat: That voice I hear – is it a shout or whisper? Yes, the Spirit often speaks in a still, small voice – but He speaks other ways as well. And He isn’t shy about getting my attention. God doesn’t hide from us. So when I detect a whisper in my ear, I need to pay attention and ask, “Is this something that God would shout from the mountain tops? Or is it something that my adversary is quietly whispering in the darkness, hoping the lies will enter my mind without being exposed to the light?” (Matthew 10:26-27.) Is the message life-giving or draining? Jesus told us that our enemy intends to steal, kill and destroy – but He came that we’d experience life abundantly (John 10:10.) Am I experiencing assurance of who I am in Christ, or being driven to doubt? Is the message I’m receiving making me more confident and full of faith? Or is it creating anxiety or fear? (e.g. 1 John 5:11-12, Ephesians 2:10, Jeremiah 31:3, Romans 8:14-16.)

Huish Episcopi Academy

huish episcopi academy

Somerset

Our Academy consists of almost 1500 learners with 215 students in Huish Sixth. Set in the heart of the beautiful Somerset levels we have a catchment area of approximately 200 sq miles and work with 11 partner primary schools within our Community Learning Partnership. As an Academy we are consistently oversubscribed with large numbers of pupils joining us from beyond our catchment area. We have a staff of almost 200 teachers and support staff with 98 teachers split across a range of faculties and departments. Larger faculties include Mathematics, English, Science and Modern Languages while other areas such as the Arts and Humanities are based on smaller departments. Within our structures we have Progress Leaders in Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and Post-16 who are responsible for the monitoring of standards and ensuring that every pupil makes the maximum amount of progress. These Progress Leaders are supported by Student Support Workers, who much like a triage nurse in a hospital, will offer an immediate service and then refer students on for more serious issues such as safeguarding. The heart of our pastoral system is based around the Student Services Hub which also houses our Parent and Family Support Adviser, Counsellor and Attendance Officer. We are very conscious that many of our pupils will be joining from smaller primary schools, and so we have a very well established transition programme to support pupils who join our Academy. Pupils meet their tutor every morning and afternoon to "touch base" as well as check planners and undertake a variety of learning activities within our Extra Curriculum Time programme. Huish Episcopi Academy has an excellent reputation and is recognised as a place where all pupils are inspired and challenged to go beyond what they ever thought was possible for them both in terms of academic standards and experiences beyond the classroom. This is reflected in our belief that developing rounded individuals who are not only academically successful, but who also have opportunities to develop other key skills, such as leadership, teamwork and communication, which will give them the edge when it comes to future challenges. This continues to be very important within Huish Sixth where both employment and university places depend on being able to rise above the rest. We believe in offering "results plus" so that great academic outcomes alongside a host of memorable learning experiences combine to produce an individual student with great attributes such as aspiration, leadership, empathy and confidence alongside fantastic academic achievements. In addition to the great learning and social environment within Huish Sixth we are able to offer a highly experienced team of teachers and support staff with a great track record of achieving the very best results possible for students. We believe that Huish Sixth, with approximately 215 students, is large enough to offer a very broad curriculum to meet a wide range of abilities supported by a huge number of artistic, sporting and other enrichment opportunities. Equally though Huish Sixth is small enough to get to know students as people, to understand their aspirations and educational needs so that we can ensure they get a personalised package of challenge and support.
