The spirit of the Centre’s aims has remained unchanged for over 100 years: Swarthmore seeks to inspire lives through friendly learning within a commitment to equality of opportunity Swarthmore is a centre for lifelong learning, community projects and family learning sessions as well as the courses and activities. Our main aim is to encourage people who want to learn but might not feel comfortable in more formal educational institutions. We work on a friendly, human scale. Many volunteers currently support the Centre’s work, and we welcome their contributions of time and energy. The Centre was founded by members of the Quaker movement in 1909 with the aim of including and involving people in learning activities and making sure that people were treated with equality and respect. Two members of the Society of Friends remain on our democratically elected ‘Council’ of Trustees, made up of Centre members and representatives of community organisations with shared aims. Swarthmore is a not-for-profit registered charity, and a company limited by guarantee. Our Grade II Listed Building has a fascinating history and is made up of six four-story terraced houses with additional dance and art studios to the rear. We have specialist facilities for pottery, jewellery, stained glass and sculpture, and the atmosphere is intentionally homely and informal. We also work within the local community on negotiated projects, including arts and ‘Skills for Life’ programmes. Many groups and individuals make use of the Centre as a community resource, providing facilities for a wide variety of local groups. Swarthmore attracts a social mix of people who come to the Centre because of their shared interests in learning rather than their background. We offer room hire at competitive rates, and welcome the public to use our café facilities. At Fight for Peace young people make friends, get fit, and develop their interests, skills, and confidence. Our aim is to ensure young people achieve their full potential in life, and we welcome any young person from our communities aged 7-25 years old. We embrace the power of sport for the life lessons it teaches, such as resilience and discipline, as well as improved health and wellbeing. And we combine this with one-to-one mentoring conversations with qualified youth workers, personal development sessions, and education and employability support. Young leaders also shape our services, being part of staff recruitment and strategy development, producing communications, and progressing to employed roles as ‘Next Gen’ staff. We support around 500 young people per year at our Academy in east London and, in order to reach as many young people as possible, we train and work with like minded community partners across the UK and the world - something we call the Fight for Peace Alliance. My journey began in 2003 when I achieved my qualification as a Driving Instructor, realizing a lifelong ambition and following in my father's footsteps. Helping young people navigate the road to safe driving has always been at the core of my mission. Life took an unexpected turn when my now ex- husband received an opportunity to work in Dubai, leading us to embark on a 15-year adventure in the Middle East. During this time, I temporarily stepped away from teaching. However, upon our return to the UK, the challenge of finding a Professional Driving Instructor for my 17-year-old daughter opened my eyes to the struggles parents face. This personal experience ignited my determination to re-qualify as an instructor, and I found immense joy in helping my daughter and other students achieve their driving dreams. In the wake of the global changes brought about by Covid, the demand for Driving Instructors soared. Distressed parents, unable to find professional help, approached me daily. Witnessing this struggle motivated me to create online courses, offering parents valuable insights and guidance for supporting their teenagers through the learning process. I also initiated the "Private Practice" Facebook Group, a community where I freely share advice to enhance home practice. 🚗 Online Courses: My online courses are designed to empower parents to provide the right support at home, ensuring their teenagers receive effective training. Having experienced the challenges firsthand, I understand the importance of quality instruction during private practice. Through these courses, I aim to bridge the gap and equip parents with the knowledge and skills needed to guide their teens safely to success. The London College of Osteopathic Medicine (LCOM) is the teaching arm of the Osteopathic Trust, and the Osteopathic Association Clinic (OAC) is the clinic arm. Osteopathic Trusts is a charity (Charity No 31375) formed in 1937 by a group from the early cohort of pioneer Osteopaths who came from the USA. Their purpose was to enable the teaching of osteopathy to registered medical practitioners in the UK, attempting to provide osteopathic treatment at low cost to the local community. LCOM and OAC are closely linked. The Clinics attract a steady flow of patients who seek relief from a wide variety of musculo-skeletal aches and pains. People can see qualified practitioners or osteopaths in training, who are supervised by qualified tutors. The trainees benefit from the practical opportunity to rehearse their new skills, learnt over a period of a year and a half in weekly techniques tutorials.
