Our workshops and training programmes are tailored to offer only the most relevant, up-to-date and useful employment advice possible. The tips and techniques we offer to our students have been shown to make a real difference to their lives and to speed up the process of either finding a job or getting a new business off the ground. We believe in empowering young people, promoting their confidence and enabling them to make use of their skills and talents rather than letting them be wasted. We tailor workshops not only to those looking for jobs but for those wishing to enjoy the independence and freedom that can come with self-employment too. Many students begin our training courses and workshops confused about the direction in which they wish to head and end them knowing exactly what their goals are and the steps they need to take to try and achieve them. img5We work hard to make our courses, programmes and workshops fun as well as educational, giving learners new opportunities to interact with people from various different backgrounds. We feel that the fun factor helps our students to digest new knowledge and makes learning a pleasure rather than a chore. Understandably, a great deal of our students – particularly those who have been unemployed on a long-term basis – have found themselves suffering from low self-esteem after being rejected by the job market so regularly. We endeavour to boost our students’ confidence and re-energise them, ensuring that they feel able to walk into their next interview with their heads held high. Our social development skills training programme is designed to help them solve problems and become fully integrated into their communities. It is also tailored towards enabling young people to interact with people from all backgrounds, cultures and age groups.

Our aim is to help to create a local community where people of all ages and situations feel included, know that they can contribute and realise a deep sense of belonging. Oasis Community Hub Hobmoor is particularly focused in the South Yardley area of Birmingham, and at the meeting point of three Wards: Tyseley and Hay Mills, South Yardley and Yardley West and Stechford, although it also works beyond those wards in a number of ways. The work of the Hub incorporates the formal education delivered by Oasis Academy Hobmoor and Hobmoor Community Centre, as well as a large number of community projects that are run alongside them to support students, their families and the wider community. The Hub has made a transformational change to the life of the local community in a number of ways. In 2018/19 the Hub worked with a total of 2,718 local people and had a total of 62 individual volunteers.

The Custom House and Canning Town Community Renewal Project … is a charity established in 1994 and is based in the refurbished old St Luke’s Church building in Canning Town. Our mission is to develop and manage self-sustaining local groups, community-controlled assets and a range of activities and enterprises for the benefit of the local people. The Charity obtained St. Luke’s for a peppercorn and organised a £2.25 million refurbishment which created 4 floors of spacious offices and amenities. Rent from the offices and the Abrahams nursery building makes the Charity self sustaining and provides a regular if modest sum for charitable activities. The Charity is governed almost entirely by local people. At the end of 2021 the following were members of the Management Committee:- Sarah Ruiz Forest Gate Janet Moffatt Canning Town Frank Rosillo-Calle Canning Town Lorraine Starke Canning Town Freda Ayres Canning Town Amala Corera Epping Adrian Hodgson Custom House Elizabeth Booker Canning Town Structure, governance and management The Charity is registered as a charitable company limited by guarantee and governed by its Memorandum and Articles of Association. The CH&CTCRP, with a turnover of under £500,000, is run by trustees who are also directors. 9 trustees take responsibility for the risks involved in running the organisation by making considered decisions. They do this for nothing. 7 of 8 trustees come from Newham and 6 are from Custom House and Canning Town. The Charity is run by LOCAL PEOPLE FOR LOCAL PEOPLE. The trustees delegate their power to the general manager (John McNeill) who runs all the essential business and project work of the Charity. John’s first duty is to keep the Trustees properly informed so they can make effective decisions. The Charity also employs a financial administrator (Mike Bowles). The CH&CTCRP has broad charitable objectives to promote purposes beneficial to local people including; the relief of poverty, the advancement of education and training, the preservation and protection of the environment and the provision of recreation in the interest of social welfare to improve the conditions of life of local people.
