Scotland has welcomed more than 20,000 Ukrainian refugees since the war with Russia began. The Ukrainian’s have been issued with visas, temporary accommodation but are also eligible to work. Whilst these measures are welcome more help is still needed. The Third Sector and the goodwill of volunteers have been able to address some of the challenges that these Ukrainians have faced but there is still a lack of clear learner paths for them to get back into work.

We have been working with families since 2020 and have built good relationships reflected in our engagement figures. We are a part of Birmingham City Council’s VPRS Partnership Board and are also currently working with other partner organisations on a number of projects – BSMHT, NHS, UOB, Spring Housing and Community Connexions. RAI were contracted to set up focus/listening groups so these organisations could use information gathered to inform their own services. We have also been commissioned to deliver our driving theory course to groups in neighbouring authorities – Solihull Council, Staffordshire Council. We have predominantly worked with the Syrian refugees but are now beginning to reach out and offer our services to the Ukrainian and Afghan families. We have been also working and networking with other grass root voluntary organisations like Saathi House, Nishkam Trust, Age Concern and Blesst Centre who work with elderly/vulnerable population including South Asians, Indians and Black/Caribbean Africans.

It all began in June 2012, when a team of parents-enthusiasts set up a Russian speaking parent and toddler group, called “Solnyshko" (loosely translated as “Sunshine”). The aim of this group was to create a Russian speaking environment for their young children and help them in learning the Russian language. The parent and toddler group is aimed at children from 1 to 3 years and operates all year around, excluding school holidays. The sessions include the staples of singing, dancing, nursery rhymes, puppet shows, crafts and sensory activities for the younger ones, as well as themed sessions aimed at expanding vocabulary of a particular topic of the week, basic numeracy and knowledge of the alphabet. Following growing demand and in response to a number of requests, the Committee decided to open a Saturday school for teaching Russian language to older children in more depth. Thus, in September 2013 Warrington Russian Language School “Solnyshko” opened its doors to older children. The opening ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Warrington and accompanying dignitaries. "Solnyshko" has been expanding ever since and currently offers classes to children aged from 3 and 16 years. Classes are organised according to age and knowledge of the Russian language. The curriculum includes lessons of Russian language and literature, expanding vocabulary and music, preparing for Russian language GCSE exam. Our goal - creation of friendly Russian-speaking environment for children, helping them to learn the language, make friends and have fun. We are truly an international school, we unite people from different backgrounds and ethnic groups. The school holds regular “open lessons” and special children performances involving the school’s pupils, where parents have the opportunity to observe the development and success of their children. The Committee and school staff are tirelessly working on creating a positive and welcoming atmosphere in the school, which is important not only for children, but also helps adults to develop and maintain social ties and support each other. The school has a system of seeking parents feedback - in addition to regular parent surveys through written questionnaires, parents are invited to write their comments and suggestions and drop them in the “suggestion box”, located next to the entrance. They are also encouraged to ask questions or make suggestions at any time. The Committee is always glad to welcome new volunteers, who wish to join the management of the school. All school staff are DBS is checked. School teachers have appropriate pedagogical education and experience of working with children. Classes are held each Saturday from 9.30 to 11:50. From 12:00 a selection of clubs start. "Solnyshko" is a not-for-profit organisation, registered with Warrington Borough Council. Families, who have two or more children attending "Solnyshko" are eligible to discounts. Anyone, who is struggling to pay school fees, is encouraged to talk to the school’s Committee, where arrangements could be considered. *** Given the momentum and public support Warrington Russian Language School has received during its temporary closure on 12th of March 2022, we work closely with Warrington Borough Council on two matters: 1. On preventing bullying of kids with links to Russia or Russian language at this difficult time. 2. Working together helping Ukrainian refugees to quickly and successfully integrate into the community by providing translation/interpreting, advice and free lessons in our language school (English, Russian and Ukrainian), as well as access to art/painting, craft, music band, football and other activities in Russian language (as you know, most people in Ukraine can speak Russian language). We have a small database of local people (as well as our own teachers) willing to give their free time to teach various subjects and translate as necessary for the Ukrainian refugees. We also work closely with the community and can propose and host "tea and advice" meet up events in various locations. The temporary closure of our classes on 12th of March was very tough for everyone at Russian Language School "Solnyshko" (parents, pupils, teachers). We were so glad, however, to receive such overwhelming support from local community and happy it's behind us now. We look forward to even closer links to the wider community, St Wilfrids Primary School and Warrington Borough Council.

This website is all about both the bright and lovely meeting rooms available for hire, and also the events that we will put on at these rooms. All our events are intended to try and help people to escape the ordinary and inspire them to create an even better life for themselves. We will be hosting a wide variety of different events from motivational workshops, to discovering a new hobby, to business brainstorming and everything in between! There is so much hardship, anxiety and loneliness in the world that where possible we would love to make a difference. All workshops are kept small to try and foster a feeling of security and closeness between our attendees. A lot of the groups will be regular ones where people can get to know each other and build a sense of community. In addition to our workshops we will also put on various charity events to help those in need, the first one being a support group for Ukrainian people locally. All the events are actual get togethers rather than online because there really is nothing quite like being physically in a room together to help develop trust, bonds and friendships. If you feel shy or nervous no problem at all. There’s no obligation to say anything unless or until you feel ready. If you feel nervous about coming in then just let me know and I will walk in with you.

Our school supports students in developing creative confidence and finding courage through a range of icon painting courses and workshops open to students at all levels. Edinburgh School of Icon Painting was founded in September 2013. It is a small school based in the artist hub St. Margaret's House. The school mission is to teach icon painting (writing) to people of all different backgrounds but at the same time maintaining the ethos and essence of it's spirituality. Introducing this unique form of art to students of the school I introduce a way of practising art which is different the other forms of art and it is said to be more then just art. Students learn egg tempera technique which has been used in art for centuries and it is one of the most lasting painting techniques. There are still reasonably well preserved icons from VI Century. Egg tempera involves preparing own paints using egg yolk and dry pigments. Through the whole process of work we try to limit synthetic materials. Using organic materials helps to develop a connection with nature and in consequence with the Divine. Basia Mindewicz - founder and teacher. Born in 1978. Originally from Russia, I lived in the UK since the late 1990s, making London my home and a place of infinite inspiration. I studied film history, gaining a PhD in the field of Soviet Holocaust cinema, while working with various film festivals and running my own cultural events production company. In 2014 after leaving my career in the arts sector, I launched KinoVino which rapidly gained recognition as one of the most original projects redefining London’s food scene. Since its launch I developed a bespoke event branch, hosted supper clubs under my own name exploring food from my native Russia and released my debut cookbook Salt and Time in 2019. My recipes are featured in The Guardian, Red Magazine, Olive Magazine, The Independent and House & Garden amongst other leading UK publications. While my events have been highlighted in Vogue, Elle, TimeOut, and I’ve been shortlisted for the Young British Foodie Awards in 2017. I’ve also had the honour of being listed at number one of the new voices in food by the Observer Food Magazine in February 2019, and having my cooking names a new trend for 2021 by Waitrose Magazine. Since 24 Feb 2022, I have started #CookforUkraine campaign using the language of food to raise awareness and funds for the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine right now. I have teamed up with my dear friend, Ukrainian chef, writer and activist, Olia Hercules, and the formidable team behind #CookforSyria to create a global movement to celebrate the food of Ukraine while providing the much needed humanitarian help vid UNICEF Emergency Relief Fund. Machine knitting was one of the first major stages in the textile industry that led to the Industrial Revolution. It’s still in use today but unfortunately, it’s become a forgotten craft! So we’re here to bring it back! During this creative and therapeutic class your teacher Valeria will guide you through designing and making your own knitted artwork. You'll learn how to use the vintage knitting ‘machine’ and listen to the wonderful sound it produces as the needles move. The process of machine knitting enables you to have full control over your design. Many people find machine knitting therapeutic and relaxing as you can watch and listen to your artwork come to life.
