Course Details This awareness course is ideal for anyone that needs to develop a basic understanding of what asbestos is, the risks associated with asbestos and how to work safely to avoid exposure to asbestos. An awareness level knowledge of asbestos is very important for anyone self-employed, working as a contractor, or anyone involved in maintenance or refurbishment of buildings. An awareness of where you can commonly find asbestos and what to look out for can keep you safe and reduce your risk of developing mesothelioma and lung cancer.

Asbestos awareness training is required to be given to employees whose work could foreseeably expose them to asbestos. In particular, it should be given to all demolition workers and those workers in the refurbishment, maintenance and allied trades where it is foreseeable that their work will disturb the fabric of the building because asbestos containing materials may become exposed during their work.

P404 Air Sampling of Asbestos and MMMF and Requirements for a Certificate of Reoccupation Following Clearance of Asbestos is the industry standard qualification for those whose work involves air sampling and clearance testing, such as asbestos analysts. In addition to holding the qualification, they are required to undertake and provide evidence of annual refresher training. RP404 Refresher is a new course, specifically designed to meet this requirement. RP404 Refresher enables candidates to revise and update their knowledge on air sampling and clearance testing techniques, and to receive a certificate of course completion by passing a written examination, which covers both the theory and practice of air sampling and clearance testing.

The main subject areas of the course are: Controlling the health risks of asbestos. Sample handling and waste disposal. Identification of asbestos by PLM. Gravimetric quantification of asbestos-containing materials. Discrimination and quantification of free fibres by dispersion and PCM. Analysis of soils - practical application.

The main subject areas of the course are: Legislation and guidance for asbestos practitioners. The properties of asbestos and health effects of exposure to asbestos fibres. The types of asbestos and its uses in buildings. The types of asbestos surveys. The asbestos register, risk assessment and management plan. Asbestos remediation. The role of asbestos analysts and laboratory procedures.

Asbestos bulk analysts and laboratory analysts. Anyone who manages asbestos analysts or requires a deeper understanding of the asbestos analysis process (e.g. Laboratory Quality Manager) Prior Knowledge and Understanding Candidates for this course are expected to be aware of HSG 248 Asbestos: The Analysts' Guide (July 2021), and in particular Appendix 2: Determination of asbestos in bulk materials. Candidates will preferably have prior experience of analysing bulk samples and may already be participating in a quality control scheme. In addition, candidates are expected to have had training to cover the core competencies outlined within the foundation material detailed within Table A9.1 of HSG248 Asbestos: The Analysts' Guide (July 2021). Candidates will preferably have prior experience of analysing fibre count samples and may already be participating in a quality control scheme. In addition, candidates are expected to have had training to cover the core competencies outlined within the foundation material detailed within Table A9.1 of HSG248 Asbestos: The Analysts' Guide (July 2021). This may be achieved by In -house learning or through the P400 foundation module.

Asbestos surveyors, or managers of surveyors and surveying teams. Asbestos re-inspectors or anyone that undertakes asbestos re-inspections. Those who require a detailed understanding of asbestos surveying principles (e.g. asbestos report writers, architects, building surveyors etc.) Prior Knowledge and Understanding Candidates for this course are expected to be aware of the contents of HSG 264 Asbestos, the survey guide and have a minimum of six months prior experience of assisting on asbestos surveys. In addition, candidates are expected to have had training to cover the core competencies outlined within the foundation material detailed within Table A9.1 of HSG248 Asbestos: The Analysts' Guide (July 2021). This may be achieved by In -house learning or through the P400 foundation module.
