Royal Papworth Hospital

Cambridge

Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is the UK’s leading heart and lung hospital, treating around 50,000 patients each year. The Trust is currently rated 'outstanding' by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), from an inspection carried out in 2019. It became the first hospital Trust in the country to receive the top rating of 'outstanding' in each of the five main domains that the CQC assesses. Founded as a tuberculosis colony in 1918, Royal Papworth Hospital has established an international reputation for excellence in research and innovation. Since carrying out the UK’s first successful heart transplant in 1979, the hospital now performs more heart, heart-lung and lung transplants each year than any other UK centre. It also in 2015 became the first hospital in Europe to perform a pioneering type of heart transplant - donation after circulatory death (DCD) - and in 2022 performed its 100th DCD heart transplant, making it the biggest and most successful DCD heart transplant centre in the world. In addition to transplantation, Royal Papworth Hospital has the UK’s largest Respiratory Support and Sleep Centre (RSSC) and is one of five UK centres providing Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) to patients experiencing severe respiratory failure. It is also the only centre in the UK for a number of specialist services including Pulmonary Endarterectomy and Balloon Pulmonary Angioplasty (BPA). Royal Papworth Hospital is a member of Cambridge University Health Partners (CUHP), a partnership between one of the world's leading universities and three NHS Foundation Trusts. CUHP delivers world-class excellence in healthcare, research, clinical education and improves the health of people across Cambridgeshire, the East of England and nationally. In 2017, the hospital was granted Royal status by Her Majesty the Queen in recognition of its commitment to excellence in cardiothoracic care. Royal Papworth moved to a state-of-the-art building on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in May 2019, which was officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen in July 2019. In October 2019, it became the first hospital Trust in the country to receive the top rating of 'outstanding' in each of the five main domains that the CQC assesses.

Brigg

The Vale Academy is situated in the small market town of Brigg in North Lincolnshire. We are a successful and high-achieving school. We have an excellent reputation and an established trend of high student outcomes which are consistently above those achieved nationally. In January 2017, we moved into our new building which provides state of the art facilities and an outstanding learning environment for our students and staff. These new facilities will enhance our excellent teaching and learning still further and will contribute to our drive for on-going success. The academy is extremely popular and, although we take most of our students from Brigg and the surrounding towns and villages, a large number of families from outside the catchment area also select The Vale as their secondary school of choice. Indeed, many students are prepared to travel some distance to access the high quality education we offer. The change to academy status in 2011 has brought with it many advantages, not least of which is the opportunity to be part of the Delta Academies Trust. This is an educational charity whose ethos is based on four founding principles which match our own: Quality, Partnership, Aspiration and Responsibility. At The Vale Academy, we pursue excellence for our students within all areas of their lives. We expect them to aspire to be the best that they can be and to achieve the highest possible academic standards. We also expect our students to develop into caring and considerate young people, who will leave the academy to become responsible citizens and make a valuable contribution to society. Indeed, we are justly proud of our students’ positive attitudes and outstanding behaviour.

Marlborough

Witheford Equine - Home He is often referred to as a horse whisperer, others call him ‘the magic man’, but Gary Witheford, the man who breaks horses in less than half an hour, prefers to call himself a ‘horseman’. As the first man to break in zebras, Gary and his son, Craig, have worked with horses who present all sorts of problems. These range from refusing to load onto horseboxes, ridden issues such as bolting, bucking, rearing or napping, fear of traffic, farrier or vet phobias and many other challenges faced by horse owners from all disciplines, be it happy hackers or competition horses. Gary’s expertise in dealing with horses spans over 35 years and January 2018 brought about a slight re-structuring in the business. The decision was made to focus purely on working in the racing industry for racehorses who have a range of issues, most notably those with issues when being loaded into starting stalls but the team also break in hundreds of horses each year – although he prefers the term ‘start’. ‘Breaking-in’ is a very negative term. The most notable of his racing successes to date is Sea The Stars for Irish trainer John Oxx and the mighty Kingman for John Gosden. As Gary explains, horses don’t really want to get into a fight and by working them using pressure and release, they quickly learn to look at you as a leader. “The less pressure there is the more the horse will follow you. It’s the herd instinct. Horses are flight animals, whether they are thoroughbreds, ponies or shire horses so you’ve got to go through their thoughts and go back to basics.’’ As the ‘magic man’ says “I like to think I let my horses do the talking and let the results speak for themselves. It’s all about trust and getting them to think ‘You’re my leader and I will follow you’. It just proves to me that the way I handle horses has to work. I have great respect for the owners, riders and trainers that I work with and totally appreciate the trust they place in me. With the increased focus on welfare for horses I hope that by working as a team we can all make things better for the horses, handlers and riders".
