BARKING ABBEY SCHOOL IS A VERY LARGE SCHOOL ON TWO CAMPUSES IN EAST LONDON THAT SERVES THE BOROUGHS OF BARKING & DAGENHAM AND REDBRIDGE. We are a non-selective, comprehensive twelve form entry school with a proud tradition of academic and sporting success. The school is very popular in the local community for both Year 7 and sixth form admissions and is heavily oversubscribed. Barking Abbey School was founded in 1922 as one of the first co-educational grammar schools in England at the site in Longbridge Road. At the time, it was situated in a largely rural area, with fields and farmland close by. Gradually, as Barking began to expand as a residential centre, the school became the focal point for the community with an educational provision of national standing. In 1970, Barking Abbey Grammar School was merged with Park Modern School to form the Barking Abbey School we know today. Many traditions of the old schools remain, but with important developments to enable the school and its pupils to be fully prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities of life in the twenty-first century. One thing remains central, however: we are an outstanding success. Barking Abbey school has a very large Sixth Form with approximately 450 students. As a result of this we are able to offer a large range of courses to our 16-19 year olds. We are proud of the fact that we are a multi-cultural community and we seek to celebrate our diversity in as many ways as possible. Workers at ABP’s Port of Ipswich are plugging in to an e-bike trial scheme with Suffolk County Council. The council’s Way To Go Suffolk team, which helps people to travel sustainably, has launched a scheme for businesses where employees are encouraged to ditch the car and try out an electric bike free of charge. Employees can choose to trial commuting for a week at a time with some of the bikes, whilst others are used as pool bikes allowing staff to pop out at lunchtime for a break and some exercise. The Port of Ipswich is the first organisation to get involved with the scheme, having taken delivery of eight e-bikes for a trial period of three months. The bikes are supplied by e-bike rental provider Hurrecane. They have a range of around 50 miles and, other than punctures, are covered with a call-out service for any breakdowns and repairs. They are different to conventional bikes as they are powered by a battery to assist the rider, increasing the distance that someone can cycle. The council is initially looking to work with organisations that have at least 50 employees and are based in a large town environment. Traditionally, most flight simulators are reserved for flight school instructors' use to conduct "in house training", while the Independent Instructor is left out; not to mention the fact that most small flight schools cannot afford the cost of purchasing a simulator. Aerial Sim Training is the solution. The simulator we utilize is the Precision Flight Controls DCX Pro Motion. This state of the art Sim is designed for the General Aviation Pilot. The DCX will emulate 32 different general aviation aircraft, both single and multi-engine. The simulator has motion & dynamic feel, a 225 degree display and is FAA Part 61 approved for logging Instrument Initial Training, Instrument Currency and Instrument Proficiency Checks. My name is Suzanne Rogers, and despite being a middle-aged woman (how did that happen?!), I am still deeply passionate about living and enjoying life to the full. For those who don’t yet know me, I love keeping active; if I am not dancing, or teaching Pilates, you will find me upside down in the gym. Upside down you may wonder. Well apart from the obvious anti-gravity effects I am hoping this will have on my face, my latest challenge is improving my handstand. You see, I am a great believer in embracing our inner child; it is still there deep within each of us, and we should allow that version of us a little more time to be free, to play, to wonder, and to try new things without allowing the perceived boundaries of our age to limit us. My suggestion to everyone would be to play more, laugh more, move more, and live your life the way you would like to, not to limit yourself based purely on your age. Discover that childlike version of yourself, believe that you are never too old to try new things, to learn new skills, and stick out your tongue to anyone who tries to tell you otherwise!! Movement is the elixir of life, and I am passionate about sharing my joy of movement with you. Our bodies are designed to be moved, and if we are sedentary, they will ultimately let us down. Just like a car that is unused and un-cared for, it will become rusty, and prone to breaking down. Sadly, we are often more willing to care for the things that we own like our homes, or our cars whereas in reality, our bodies are our lifelong homes and our means of transport: they deserve to be cared for, nourished, and loved so that we can enjoy freedom of movement throughout our lives.
