Have you ever made something truly from start to finish?&nbsp;
 Have you ever set out with nothing, and ended up with something tangible &amp; useful in your hands?
In this two day workshop you will learn the ancient craft of bark basketry. The techniques, methods and materials you&rsquo;ll use have changed very little since pre-historic times.
We will cover
Day 1&nbsp; - The history of bark usage&nbsp; - Understanding trees &amp; bark - Identification of suitable trees - How to harvest bark&nbsp; - How to store bark - Case study; Native Americans &amp; Wester Red Cedar
Each student will harvest their own bark ready for the following day
Day 2 - How to prepare and use bark for baskets - Barks strengths and weaknesses&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; 
Each student will create their own basket using a combination of bark they have harvested, and some harvested &amp; supplied by Fazey Woodcraft.
We will be making folded bark baskets, similar to the one shown in the workshop image. These are based on a pre-historic Native American design, called a 'Makuk'.

Each student will also learn basic carving and green-woodworking techniques for making the rim &amp; handle of the basket.
As with all woodcraft &amp; bushcraft activities, the most important elements are identification &amp; respect. Tree identification, respectful harvesting and general woodland knowledge will permeate the days learning.

This one day course is all about the humble Birch tree.
It is a tree steeped in myth, in folklore and more recently in science. From North America to Asia, across the whole of Europe &amp; the British Isles, this tree has been used since pre-history for innumerable things.
I&rsquo;ve a long standing passion and fascination for this tree. For its natural and social history, and particularly its myriad uses and the gifts it provides.
We&rsquo;ll discover the ancient practice of creating Birch Tar, along with its incredible properties and uses.
We&rsquo;ll learn to tap the tree and drink its sap.
We&rsquo;ll discover and use the many objects which can be made from the tree, as well as learn about its medicinal properties and how the chemicals within it, as well as fungi which grow on it, are currently being studied by science to potentially prove many of the old myths and tales true..

Ever wondered how they did it, our ancestors?
This one day course is all about Firecraft. In it you will learn the fundamentals of lighting and maintaining a fire, whether it&rsquo;s a chilly spring morning or the depths of snowy winter.
We will cover;
Ignition - Methods: Modern / Ancient / Pre-Historic Growth - Tinder / Kindling / Wood Maintenance - Finding Materials / Building your Fire / Understanding Fire Safety - Site Selection / Preventing Wildfires / Burn First Aid
The day will be split in two halves. The first part will focus on different methods of creating an ember or a flame using natural materials.
Part two will focus on the often overlooked, but as, if not more important element of firecraft - maintaining a fire. More often than not it is at this stage that people struggle. We will spend time practicing and ensuring you have the knowedge and ability to maintain a fire.Suitable for complete beginners, as well as those looking to improve and learn new skills.
As with all woodcraft &amp; bushcraft activities, the most important elements are identification &amp; respect. You must see the woods with familiar eyes. Tree identification, spotting deadwood and general woodland knowledge will permeate the days learning. Respect, care and understanding are what create a good fire.

He lights a fire in the woods with all the precision and attention to detail that is the untroubled self-consciousness of those who, with age, are resolved that what they represent be respected. It is easy to feel impatient with this pace and attentiveness to detail, with its touches of zeal, even fanaticism. Easy to be impatient, that is, until you remember what fire signifies to hunters of the sub-Arctic forest: fires and walking are the two ways to keep warm - clothes are light and the old cannot always walk long enough or fast enough to keep out the cold. Excellence with fires is essential. Joseph Patsah does not flaunt his skill.&rdquo;&nbsp;
