Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy is a larger-than-average mixed secondary school in the town of Birtley. The school role is usually around 1450 students, including around 200 in the sixth form. The school occupies a large site, elevated above the east side of the town. Birtley is situated in the borough of Gateshead, and is between Gateshead and Chester-le-Street. Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy is a stand-alone academy, with no affiliation to other schools or academy trusts. Secondary schools in Gateshead work closely together, with one another, with their cluster of primary schools and with the local authority. The school was founded in 1970 as an amalgamation of three previous secondary schools. The present school building was opened in September 2007, built as part of the government’s Private Finance Initiative. The building was constructed by Sir Robert McAlpine and is very well maintained. It provides good-sized classrooms and excellent facilities for learning. Andrew Fowler has been the Principal since June 2019. Previous principals were Mark Lovatt and, before him, David Grigg. The principal is assisted by a deputy principal and a small number of assistant principals. Departments are led by subject leaders, assisted in the larger subjects by deputy and assistant subject leaders. The school is named after Jack Lawson, who was an influential local trade union leader and Labour politician. Jack Lawson became a Member of Parliament, representing a constituency in County Durham. He was a minister in the MacDonald and Attlee governments. When Jack Lawson was given a life peerage in 1950, he took the title Baron Lawson of Beamish. The school’s vision and values are inspired by Jack Lawson’s dedication to public service and education. The school still enjoys strong links with local industry and politics.

Tolhurst Organic lies just outside the village of Whitchurch-on-Thames in south Oxfordshire. Nestled between the Chilterns and the river Thames, the farm is situated in the picturesque Hardwick Estate, with 17 acres in two fields and 2 acres in the 500 year old walled garden. Iain Tolhurst, along with his business partner Lin, have held the organic symbol for over 30 years, thus making Tolhurst Organic one of the longest running organic vegetable farms in England. The farm doesn’t only hold the “Soil Association” symbol but was the first to attain the “Stockfree Organic” symbol in 2004, and has had no grazing animals and no animal inputs to any part of the farm for the last 10 years. In may 2014 we registered as a Community Interest Company limited by guarantee. This shows that our activities benefit the community, and it offers more opportunities for business development. We supply in-season organic vegetables and fruit delivered to your neighbourhood weekly, via a Neighbourhood Rep’ scheme. Almost all vegetables are harvested the day of delivery to guarantee their freshness. The bags will vary from week to week according to the season and availability of produce. You cannot choose the contents of your bag – if we were to pack to individual requirements it would double the cost, so this approach keeps our box scheme affordable and accessible to all. The delivery round covers Reading, Pangbourne, Wallingford and Oxford areas, every Thursday. Our produce is dropped off to points run by Neighbourhood Reps. Your orders are placed with the Rep, and produce is collected from him/her. As well as helping to keep prices down, this way of delivery minimises food miles to almost zero. If you are in Whitchurch-on-Thames or Pangbourne, we can deliver to your door. To allow some flexibility with contents, we have a list of Extras available, so that you may order extra items, such as quantities of potatoes, carrots, onions, salad packs and less usual things such as organic flowers. We pride ourselves on being able to grow as many of the vegetables as possible ourselves and can in an average year manage to produce at least 85% of the value on our own land. We believe that food should be as local as possible, and try as far as possible only to buy from other organic farms in the area. We are founder members of Thames Organic Growers, a group formed to encourage the production of local food for local people, so where possible we trade within our group members.

We first opened our doors in June 1990 in a small 3,000 ft industrial unit in Espedair Street in Paisley. The fitness industry was very much in its infancy back in those days with no other stand-alone gyms or sports clubs in the Paisley area. Pro life was very much ahead of its time and one of a kind. Alex Whelan (7 times Scottish Body Building Champion) and family friend Brian Corkindale formed a partnership to create a state-of-the-art fitness centre in the heart of Paisley. Cybex fitness equipment and Startrac cardio machines were imported from America and over £10k was invested in fitness testing equipment. The dream very quickly became a reality and Pro-Life was born. The facility in Espedair Street quickly took off and was a major success. Alex saw the potential for expansion and in Feb 1993, Pro-Life embarked on a new chapter moving to a purpose built 12,000 sq ft unit and grew from 500 to 1200 members on its opening day. The same year Brian left the business to focus on the licensed trade leaving Alex as sole owner with the ambition to grow the business to new heights. Over the years, many further expansions and improvements have taken place to develop the centre to what we see now – an amazing 30,000 sq ft health & fitness centre with a separate stand alone five-a-side football complex incorporating 5 parks, function room, sports bar and cafe. In 2014 Pro Life entered an new exciting chapter when Alex made the decision to licence the main gym to Renfrewshire Sports Charity. The business is now run by a Board of Trustees as a registered charity. All profits made from trading go to our 2 charities – The Accord and St Vincent’s Hospices as well as supporting young up and coming talented sportspeople in the Renfrewshire Area. In November 2019 Pro Life entered the National Fitness Awards for the first time and won both categories we entered – Best Gym In Scotland and UK Strength Gym of the Year – in what was a night we will never forget. A fitting tribute to all our amazing members who have supported the gym for the last 30 years in Paisley and to Alex and all the staff that have made it what it is over the last 30 years.

Echoes of the Four Directions is a coming together of Native American Indian individuals from various tribes, for the purpose of Providing American Indians and non -native American Indians information and education in regards to Native American Indians and our culture. One of the ways we do this is with EDUCATIONAL and CULTURAL PRESENTATIONS. Echoes of The Four Directions will guide and assist you in conducting research for tracing tribal ancestry or tribal affiliation. (no fees involved). CULTURAL DIVERSITY – Echoes of the Four Directions is available as a consultant and or facilitator for both general diversity training and or customized Native American diversity training. The following is a list of what we offer. 1. Speaker – you may pick a topic or we can suggest one for you. FEE $50.00 2. Speaker and native display such as beadwork, artifacts, silverwork, rattles, etc. – display items are explained and discussed. (This is our most requested program). FEE $75.00 3. Native flute playing, talk and demonstration. FEE $50.00 4. Native Silver smith demonstration. FEE $50.00 5. Native bead work demonstration. FEE $50.00 6. Native Story telling. FEE $50.00 7. For several years during the 80’s Angela was a volunteer manager for the Red Cross Therapeutic Care Service, responsible for a team of volunteers working in hospitals and centres across the region, fitting this in with her other work. For 3 years Angela worked as a school nurse at a large senior school in Norwich, during this time she was invited to become a part-time First Aid and Child Carers Tutor at City College Norwich. During her time there gaining qualifications in management, marketing and a degree in education. Angela then became full-time Commercial Training Manager for Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex Red Cross. As well as organising a big team of Trainers part of her role was acting as an NVQ Internal Verifier and training Trainers. Along her varied career path she has built up a wealth of knowledge and expertise which reflects in the training courses and level of event cover P & K Training Services can offer.
