Traditionally butlers and domestic staff remained with their employers for many
years, often giving a lifetime of loyalty and service. In turn they were valued
and respected for their different and specific roles within the household. In
the 2020s staff are leaving their employment, often after a very short period,
stating reasons of not being respected and being exploited, expected to take on
extra roles for which they are not qualified and do not wish to undertake. It is
tempting for employers to think that butlers and other domestic staff should be
able to multi-task. Often expecting a butler to take on roles as driver, odd job
man, child carer and in one case, related to me, of log cutter!
