Currently a Post graduate Researcher at the University of Leeds, researching the most efficient methods of mordanting fibres with the environment and sustainability in mind, Debbie is also an Associate of the Society of Dyers and Colourists*. Her brand, The Mulberry Dyer, was established in the early 1990’s following the completion of the City and Guilds Art and Design – Embroidery course, with a view to producing naturally dyed embroidery silks, which at that time were unavailable. Meticulous research into dyes and methods used in the 17th century resulted in the accurate reproduction of these silks. This research was then expanded to cover all periods in history and for other fibres. Examples of work can be found in the V & A Museum, Hampton Court Palace, the Globe Theatre and other Museums and Historic Houses across the UK and Europe. A specialist in the dyestuff madder, she runs courses and masterclasses and is the first dyer for many decades to successfully reproduce the Turkey Red process in Europe. Research and experimentation continue for both historical and Industrial purposes, she is currently a Post Graduate Researcher at the University of Leeds. Environmental impacts of natural dyes and mordants, colourfastness (light, wash and rub) are key to current research. For several years a consultant to Industrial Organisations wishing to add naturally dyed products to their range. A contributor to the Encyclopaedia of Medieval Dress and Textiles c450 – 1450** and with several articles published in The Journal (for Weavers, Spinners and Dyers) a book is the next step.

Emma Scott born in Cornwall Emma enjoing a woodland eventThe beautiful surroundings that I was lucky enough to grow up in remain a constant source of creative inspiration for me, whether that’s the solitude and tranquillity of the woods or the open and beautiful seascapes. After achieving an art degree in fine arts and textiles finishing with a BA in fine art my creative processes initially had a textile based influence but rural and traditional crafts have always been a source of interest to me and I predominantly work in willow these days. I got involved with the restoration project of Mellingey Mill Willow Craft Centre in 2012 this is now where I am based and have an open studio/shop and where I run workshops. Although a lot of the work I do is still based out in the field you can find me in the shop a couple of days a week making and selling my work. Much of the willow I use for my work is grown here at Mellingey and after 5 years of management replanting my hard work is beginning to pay off and last year saw the first crop to be viable and large on a small scale to use in making most of my own products and in workshops. I find willow a great resource to work with and grow enough varieties to cover its wide ranging uses, from really fine basket willow to larger varieties that are perfect to harvest for hedges and fedges.

I am an artist and printmaker living in Sutherland in the Scottish Highlands. I am fashion and textiles trained (Bath Spa University and Manchester Polytechnic) which is where my love of printmaking started. I worked in the fashion industry for over 20 years as a designer. When I moved to Sutherland in 2005 I had the chance to be more hands-on creative and re-kindle my love of printmaking that had been simmering on the back burner since the early days of college. I take inspiration from my surroundings in the Scottish Highlands with its abundance of wildlife and vast range of contrasting landscapes, from the moors and mountains, waterfalls and lochs to the turquoise waters and white sands of the beautiful beaches. For a number of years I used a converted ACME mangle for producing my prints but then in 2012 I treated myself to a proper traditional etching press which is fabulous and much easier to use! My work includes various methods of printmaking; monoprint, drypoint etching, collagraph and lino cut and I also love mixed media techniques. I love the process of creating prints using different methods especially monoprints, where part of the fun is not knowing what the end result will be until the last minute. It can take hours of manipulating ink on the printing plate before they go through the press. I love experimenting and each finished piece is unique. I exhibit regularly in the Scottish Highlands including local galleries and my work is included in private collections in the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand. I also teach workshops for individuals and small groups in various printmaking techniques.

35 Design Space is an interactive studio set up to share craft knowledge and bring creative classes to all. Our classes are hands on and we hope that you learn a new skill and have a great time doing it! We aim to provide a creative learning environment to support and inspire fellow crafters. Alongside offering current and innovative workshop classes we want to promote historical textile crafts and share these endangered crafts to encourage their revival. If you wish to arrange a private event or book a custom made session please get in touch. Our studio can accommodate parties of up to 15. We'd love to help you celebrate occasions such as your birthday, baby shower, hen party and Christmas events with a workshop tailored to you. Martinex is a Finnish family-owned company that designs, manufactures and imports games, toys, clothing and accessories, and household goods. Martinex was established in 1986, when Risto and Tuula Muinonen decided to seek their dream; Risto had been working for Brio the toy company for a long period but an idea and an ideal of entrepreneurship and being an entrepreneur had grown strong from the seed that already had been planted at his childhood home At first, Martinex worked in the novelty and household goods business that still today plays an important role in the company and continue to be close to heart to the whole family. Gradually the long days and hard work paid off and Martinex established itself as a manufacturer and as a wholesale business. The business caught on to the next generation as Riia and Jenni, Risto’s and Tuula’s children, started working in the company with different tasks, gradually absorbing the entrepreneurial spirit that is the driving force in a family business. Year 1992 was a milestone for Martinex: the cooperation with Moomin Characters began. The company grew fast; as the company got bigger, the significance of the family as a source of strength was further emphasized. The years went by and in August 2001, it was time for the second generation to take over the company they had learned to know and love. Riia Sandström was appointed as the managing director and Jenni Jalava as a business area manager. Martinex continued to be guided by strong visions, ideas and courage, and in 2003 the company acquired the whole gaming business are of Peliko, a well-known and established Finnish manufacturer of board games. The warm and engaging company culture contributed to the growth of the company as did further acquisitions. In 2013, a Swedish manufacturer of board and card games, Mindtwister, and a Finnish manufacturer of educational card games, Emmi-tuote, became parts of the Martinex family. During the same year Martinex also entered the mobile gaming market. After a bit over 30 years, Martinex is currently an international company, with export to over 50 countries. The company has a credit rating of AAA and become a household name. Martinex currently employs over 40 people. Martinex story continues to unfold. We continue to provide retailers with household goods, textiles and toys and games the majority of which are designed in Finland, prioritizing local sourcing and production. We value traditions but always seek the new, such as this store of our own.
