Mec and Marcia are textiles and fibre artists! We are passionate about making things by hand, using as many natural fibres that we can get our hands on! Before we had some selling space, we ran a weekly Knit and Natter session, with a small selection of yarns. Then, it was suggested that we use some of the space in an existing indie shop in the heart of historic, royal Greenwich and in February 2017, Yarnarama was born! Many people tell us that there are too few yarn shops which sell 'real/natural' yarns. Acrylic is not what they're looking for and they are prepared to pay for quality wools, yarns and fibres. We sell some commercial and designer brand names, but we like to promote and sell indie yarn dyers, weavers and spinners, too. You can also find books, magazines and patterns to purchase for yourself or as a gift. As well as knitting and crocheting, we know how to felt, spin and weave. freeweaver saori studio

Freeweaver SAORI Studio is owned by Erna Janine, who has been involved with natural textiles for over 20 years. She studied hand spinning with animal and plant fibres, botanical dyes and Viking age textile construction: warp weighted looms, tablet weaving, nalbinding, etc. at the Icelandic College for traditional handcrafts in Reyjavik. For the last four years, Erna Janine has been visiting Japan regularly to study Saori freeweaving, a handweaving technique developed by Misao Jo. Unlike traditional textile techniques, which rely on repeating patterns, Saori Weaving is freestyle, personal to the weaver and so expressive that each cloth is unique, a work of art. In addition, over the last three years Erna Janine has travelled to India for textile residencies and conferences. She has block printed in Bagru, travelled around Odisha with the D.I.S.C The Art program, attended AWAKE 2 Khadi Conference in Ahmedabad and spent time in Assam for the Art as Food, Ritual and Offering program by the Assam State Museum in Guwahati. In the early months of 2020 she also made an appearance at the International Conference on the Globalisation of Khadi in Jaipur, Rajastan and spent time with the loinloom weavers in Nagaland, Assam and Megalaya.

Having grown up in Norfolk, I am inspired by the great British countryside and coastline. My paintings show my love of painting, colour, creating surface pattern texture and playing with compositions. I mostly paint in oils but also love to combine medias. My range of contemporary botanical prints are a real contrast to my oil paintings. But they also show my absolute passion for nature and love of colour and pattern, thanks to my textiles design background.. You are welcome to visit me in Studio 9, which is set in beautiful Oaks Park, opposite Mayfield lavender fields in North Surrey. I am there for a few hours most days and can often be seen painting outside my studio with my dog Tilly by my side. It is at my studio that I run my children’s art parties and various art classes and workshops.
