Now, more than ever we need to get out in nature, to connect with our natural environment and with each other to let the healing process begin. We have been helping people of all ages to find their wild since 2018 with past activities and events including after school clubs, home-schooling club and women’s bushcraft groups In 2021, we are over the moon to be working on new projects and building on our new partnerships to support mental health and well-being and we are working towards a project focussing on rewilding, conservation and stewardship in our community. Our aim is to make the outdoors accessible to all, so we run a variety of workshops and events throughout the year. Please follow us on Facebook or Twitter for more up to date news. Find Your Wild activities are fully risk assessed and carried out under the supervision of qualified level 3 Forest School leaders and outdoor first aid trained staff. All staff and volunteers are DBS checked and trained in safeguarding.

Devon First Aid was founded in 1999 by Mrs Helen Smith. Helens professional history included time working as a Senior Nurse Advisor at NHS Direct a Resuscitation Nurse Trainer in Devon and latterly as a School Matron in a private school. David has worked with Helen for several years providing support in training and assessing groups until Helen handed over the reigns in the summer of 2017. David has had a rich career in Health Care. He started in the St John Ambulance aged 12, Joined the Army as a Combat Medical Technician at 16 and trained to work in Operating Theatres a few years later. In 1992 He qualified as a Registered General Nurse working children with disabilities, elderly care, prison health care, NHS Direct and going on to qualify and practice as Specialist Community Public Health Nurse. David began his training career as an Officer with the RAF Volunteer Reserve where he maintains his affiliation with the Combined cadet force to this day. Helen developed a training ethos of gentle, fun, educational and practice-based learning which David continues to deliver. Devon First Aid offers quality training that can help you and your staff deal with any first aid emergencies. We offer FAIB approved first aid training courses that can be uniquely tailored to suit your workplace requirements. Taleblazers is a Community Interest Company that celebrates the stories of Devon and Dartmoor. We do this by researching tales from our region, rewriting them into original works and performing them as ballads or folk poems. Oral storytelling is an art we are passionate about preserving and we aim to engage young people in particular by involving them in writing and performance. We offer workshops in a variety of educational areas (heritage, natural history, ecology) to schools and historic sites and our workshops are tailored to locations to make them as relevant as possible to the groups we work with. As part of the research and writing process, we get involved with local heritage projects and promote the heritage and folklore of the areas we work in. We believe we can ‘Change the Story, Change the World’ and this philosophy informs our work with young people with additional needs. We operate a number of alternative education programmes based around the natural work, arts and outdoor skills, helping to develop social skills, mental health, resilience and vocational skills.

The length of any training course will depend on what type of machine is used, the environment it is used in & the experience of the candidates on the training course. 1-day refresher courses for experienced operators that haven’t had any training for at least a 3-5-year period (this is the time period recommended by the HSE to employers whereby staff need to be refresher trained, on all site equipment). 3-5-day courses: for novices who have not received any formal training and have no experience. All courses begin with theory sessions where candidates learn the theoretical background knowledge of the respective machine they are being trained on. This will include any relevant aspects of current UK statutory legislation, there will be a mandatory theory assessment at some point in the training. Practical training begins with an explanation as to the operation of the relevant piece of MHE equipment. Practical elements cover daily machine checks and safe operating techniques – candidates will then practice the operation of the machine until you become proficient, whereby a practical assessment will take place.
