When small, Abigail Jackson made shoes from wallpaper sample books and lashed her brothers’ wooden building blocks onto her feet with string believing herself to be a geisha. In her bedroom she stitched gnomes on hankies and cut off the frills from her maxi dress to make clothes for Pippa the pocket-sized doll. In the kitchen her mum sat her on the draining board, put sellotape across her fringe and cut under it. Abigail Jackson became one of a tiny handful of Daventry punks, who shuffling round town in bondage trousers from Seditionaries and handmade clothes coloured in with biro pens, held together with hundreds of safety pins. In her bedroom she made homemade Sid Vicious badges with pages from the NME and sticky back plastic. Dreamt of being in The Slits and planned never to have a proper job. Abi went to Northampton Art College in the ’80’s to study fashion design and Illustration. Its this foundation of designing and pattern cutting that has coloured her judgment ever since. From opening a clothes shop in Coventry at the age of 19 to opening the studio in her 50’s Its only ever been about creating and making. Abi works as a freelancer so no two jobs are the same. She designs, sews and makes for a living, breathing, all singing, all dancing proper job. In the between times she has work as a freelance wardrobe supervisor traveling extensively and working with some wonderful people. Upon returning home she stitches in her studio, works on community or school projects, plans workshops and collaborates with other creatives in Burns Street Studios. As a young NQT eager to get into the classroom, I was so fortunate to land my first teaching role at a re-known South Leicestershire Primary School. My teaching style: Focus on what they 'can do' build self-esteem & resilience & deepen understanding. With this positive approach to children's learning I noticed that before long, their confidence to tackle the tasks they couldn't do grew, often with exceptional results. Although my heart always remained in the classroom, it wasn't long before I started moving into more Senior roles as I was keen to impact on whole school development. Passionate about getting the right learning to children when they are younger, I went on to become Head of Key Stage 1 & Literacy with a special interest in how phonics was taught. When you first qualify to become a teacher, interests you may have had then, often change. Always the creative at heart I often took learning away from the desk & into the hall as children re-enacted key periods in history/literacy texts through dance/drama/music. Not only did we cover the curriculum, but it also gave children who may have struggled in the classroom, the opportunity to shine through the arts. Recognising & nurturing children's talents in this way was so rewarding & boosted their confidence back in the classroom too. I went onto become Advanced skills teacher of performing arts. As well as working with my incredibly talented Deputy Head/Head of Music to develop our reputation in this area, I was also seconded to work in other schools in the county to develop that part of the curriculum for them too. I then diversified & became Head of Behaviour Management & Pupil Well-Being. I attending various seminars run by the incredibly inspirational Dr Bill Rogers (Behaviour Management Specialist who sketched his way through seminars rather than power-points!) His simple yet effective strategies changed the way we managed behaviour back in the classroom. As we know, children mis-behave for a reason. If we can get to the root of it, we can work together to find ways to de-escalate a situation before a child ultimately goes into crisis. Unsurprisingly, I developed an interest & connection with Team Teach, award-winning 'positive handling' training which helps staff support pupils with challenging behaviour.

WHAT WE DO The Sourdough School is a research institute for the study of the nutrition and digestibility of bread. The school is run by Vanessa Kimbell – baker, best-selling author, a regular contributor to the BBC4 Food Programme, researcher and teacher. It is at the Sourdough School that we research, develop and create sourdough bread – but it is more than just bread, and it’s more than just a school. Over the last few years, the gut microbiome and its role in supporting digestion and our mental and physical health has been one of our main areas of research. HOW WE TEACH YOU TO MAKE SOURDOUGH The Sourdough Club is where we teach you how to make our amazing bread. It is the part of The Sourdough School where we share our recipes, tutorials, tips, lessons and support you so that you can learn how to make Sourdough where ever you are. WHY ARE WE DIFFERENT? Here at the school Vanessa and the team have taken the most up to date scientific findings and applied them to sourdough and other fermented foods, working towards our mission to scientifically prove that sourdough and gut-friendly nutritious food can have a positive impact on our physical and mental health. THE SCHOOL: The Sourdough School is more than a cookery school. It’s about sharing incredible scientific knowledge about the connection of bread and our gut microbiome. It’s supported by a network of medical professionals, scientists, wheat breeders, nutritionists, specialist bakers, researchers, academics and we’ve been pooling the research on sourdough & fermentation from all over the world into a central point. We develop recipes, techniques and formula’s as our aim is not just to study, but conduct our own research on formula’s & grains and fermentation and to share what we find. It’s about applying evidence and the practical application of fermenting and baking into delicious, affordable nutritious bread recipes to bake, to eat and to enjoy. The Sourdough School has featured in the 3 BEST courses in the UK in the Sunday Times and in The Telegraph top ten baking courses in the UK, as well being included in the London Evening Standard top course in the UK. Each year the Sourdough School has: Research and development workshops working on different themed areas from bread and guts, sourdough for non-coeliac gluten sensitivity, IBS, blood sugar management, sports and mental health. An annual week-long diploma focusing on in-depth analysis on bread and guts. Research study groups with renowned neuroscientists, wheat breeders, microbiologists, scientists and medical professionals. Her own research development kitchen applying the scientific findings about bread and fermented foods to create new bread formulas and recipes. A clinical study as part of her PhD working with De Montford University and baking innovation group Puratos. The school also has an online offering called the Sourdough Club where people can learn how to make sourdough online via in-depth video masterclasses hosted by Vanessa. Until easter this year our we held RCGP accredited for our nutrition and digestion of bread diploma. We decided not to renew our subscription to allow for longer courses that included more baking.
