Like many people, I was driven from a young age by a need for success, approval and security. It’s one of the reasons that I went to Cambridge to study natural sciences. My career in law was another way to achieve these aspirations. My law career was successful. I enjoyed it, for a time. I became an equity partner and the head of intellectual property and technology. I was on the board of a global top 20 law firm in London. It took me falling ill with heart disease at 37 to realise that I wasn’t working towards my true purpose. My illness was shocking. How could I, an athletic young woman, get this disease more common in older men? It made me question my identity. I began a process of training, self-discovery and learning that took me all over the world. I learned from some of the greatest teachers in coaching and self-transformation today. I realised that my thought processes and my attitude to work were not healthy. There were also many aspects of my work environment that were toxic for me. I couldn’t continue living a life that I didn’t believe in. It was time to make a significant change. I created Rachel Boothroyd Training and Coaching because I wanted to help people and businesses flourish in a sustainable, healthy way. I wanted to provide experiential training, to create motivated and engaged people, who would go on to achieve greater things for themselves and the businesses they worked for. Who could do this in a sustainable way, in workplaces with healthy cultures, with open communication, purpose and, yes, even fun. I am a heart ambassador for the British Heart Foundation and speak at events and in the media to raise heart health awareness.

If there’s something you want, its down to you to make it happen. And if things are not going the way you want, then it’s for you to change what you’re doing. Choice puts you in control of your life – making time for the things that are the most important, that make the most difference to your life.  Passion PASSION provides a purpose to what you do, so you are committed to the things you do and the actions you need to take. We do things that interest and excite us more enthusiastically, we do them longer and we are more focused. We get better. We might become expert. And if you’re unsure what to do or where to go next, start with your passion. Where might that take you?  Vision VISION is about being clear where you are going, and having a plan to achieve it. This might be a vague sense which allows you to make decisions, or clear goals so you can work out the steps needed to achieve them and ensure you are committed and motivated. Passion and Vision combined gives you a good reason to do something and achieve results – rather than looking for reasons to do nothing or procrastination.  Action Finally take ACTION. For us at Beyond Coaching, the mandala lies at the heart of the Self… It is the centre of our inter-connectedness with everyone and everything around us. It speaks to the eco-systems that we exist in in the companies we work in, the people we work with, lead and inspire. It also manifests in our personal circles, our friends, family and the communities we exist in. The mandala embodies a truly universal principle that is all embracing, regardless of the foundation of one’s belief. It symbolises the connections that exist between us and everything that surrounds us. More than anything it represents Wholeness and our African value of uBuntu. This is what drove us to form Beyond Coaching in 2009, when 21 like-minded coaches and trainers pulled together in the possibility of forming a coaching and training movement. Our Success: Each year, TAP Scholars go on to study in prestigious Universities across the UK. Here is a little bit about one of our most recently successful TAP Scholars – Joshua. Having 9 A* and 1 A GCSE Grades, plus 38 IB Points, Joshua applied to 4 UK Medical Schools. His academic profile was very strong, and not surprisingly, he was invited to interview at all 4 Medical Schools. However, he was rejected by the first 2 Medical Schools with whom he initially interviewed. Following this, his mum contacted us, and Joshua got enrolled on the Top Achievers’ Programme to improve his chances of succeeding at the remaining 2 interviews. Working with a dedicated TAP Consultant, a rigorous Interview Preparation package was drawn up for Joshua. This drastically improved his interview skills, improving his chances of gaining a place to study Medicine. His subsequent 2 interviews then took place, and he received offers from both Medical Schools. Joshua is now studying Medicine at a London Medical School.
