When I first started Healthy Muslimah and wrote Then and Now, it was a time when health and wellness content was still relatively scarce in the Muslim online space. Alhamdullilah, over the years, this space has grown and there are now many beautiful and beneficial health platforms serving our global community. As you may (or may not) know, earlier this year (2022), I made the challenging decision to 'retire' Healthy Muslimah in a bid to 'practice what I preach' - namely, "simplification", knowing that by trying to manage multiple platforms, I was spread thin and not able to serve anyone to the best of my ability. Alhamdullilah, I have fully transitioned to a single focus and single platform, Finding Sakeenah - A Journey to Tranquility Through Simplicity, helping sisters navigate the noise of this modern world, reduce overwhelm and make space for change, one small and simple step at a time, closing one chapter so that I could open another. It helps to have the last name "Pure" - it goes with so many nouns - and as a teacher, it made perfect sense to put "learning" after my name. Pure Learning started when my triplet children were four years old. As a reading specialist, who had experience in the classroom and in the private learning center arena, starting a small tutoring business seemed like the logical next step. I could set my own hours, focus on working 1:1 with students who had dyslexia and other learning issues, homeschool my own children, AND I could develop materials along the way - something I always enjoyed doing as a teacher. When I began working as a reading specialist at a Montessori school, I started implementing spelling lessons I had developed. Orton-Gillingham-based lessons with explicit skills instruction involving letters and sounds AND the use of three modalities - visual, auditory, and kinesthetic - were the most effective. Some of my students were strong in one area but weak in another. By presenting all three modalities in a lesson, each student could find their own strength and I could see how my student learned best. The teachers saw the difference the lessons I had created were making in their students' spelling and writing and craved a program that would teach them how to teach spelling AND make sense to the students. From that, Working with Words evolved. Fast forward 20+ years and, today, I can look back and know that this Orton-Gillingham-based, multisensory approach focused on phonics and the six syllable types has been successful with early, struggling, resistant, underconfident, AND strong readers and spellers. Teachers who have used Working with Words better understand the generalizations and rules that exist in spelling English words and how to teach them. In the beginning ‍From our very first periods our deep instinctual selves ‘knew’ something significant was at work but we had no language to name it. Mainstream consciousness distracted us with the message to keep quiet about the fact of the cycle and menstruation itself and we were both temporarily seduced by the apparent liberation of hormonal contraception. Thankfully our deep instinctual knowing broke through that illusion and each in our own ways found fertility awareness in our 20s, the first conscious step of awakening into the power of menstruality. ‍ From pain to power ‍At thirty one Alexandra was seized by the most outrageous menstrual pain that was to return for 3-4 days each menstrual month. In an attempt to heal her body she decided to give space to menstruation whenever she could and feel into the pain rather than take drugs. It was profoundly challenging but in the wake of that pain came revelation and importantly healing. Her perception of menstruation radically altered she began sharing with other women in workshops and her psychotherapy practice what she was discovering about the psychological and spiritual forces of the female body. The more she taught the more she learnt. Women’s stories held the gold. When she stopped to listen, to follow the natural impulse of the cycle, it was as though a whole new world, a new cosmology revealed itself. The feminine cosmology, the power of menstruality. ‍ A high definition life ‍When Sjanie came off hormonal contraception her feeling life exploded into glorious technicolour. She came alive in ways she had not known before, as though she were tasting herself for the first time. From that day forth her fascination for the cycle grew and grew and lead her to study hypnotherapy and psychotherapy, and to develop an expertise in the area of fertility with women who are struggling to conceive. As the mother of two young girls she brings the menstruality consciousness to bear on the realities of child rearing, relationship and running a business.

I am absolutely thrilled and honoured to take up the mantle of Headteacher at Tewkesbury School. When I first visited the school and the town back in 2021, I was struck by the community feel, the passion for the town and the dedication of the staff team for all the young people. I distinctly remember the pride with which the student guides spoke of the school and of their community and the ambition the team at Tewkesbury School had for every student. This will be my second Headship in the South West and my 20th year in education and I am excited to guide Tewkesbury School through its next phase. Headteachers are custodians of schools on behalf of young people and it will be my privilege to work with the whole community from governors, parents, students, colleagues and primary colleagues to other partners in the town, county and region to make sure Tewkesbury School is strong, effective and serving our children to the best of its ability. The greatest successes come from working together towards a common cause and there is no better cause than the education of the next generations. I am keenly ambitious about our future as a school so will continue the drive towards the highest standards academically and behaviourally whilst still ensuring we remain an inclusive school serving the Tewkesbury community.
