The Pilgrims School

the pilgrims school

Welcome to The Pilgrims’ School, a boys-only day and boarding prep school, that prepares boys for senior school with confidence. At Pilgrims', being a boys-only school, we don’t need to worry about gender stereotypes and there are opportunities abound: from physics to music, drama to rugby, knitting to ecology, fives to chess and so much more. A Majestic Setting In the awe-inspiring setting of ancient-listed buildings nestled between Winchester Cathedral and Winchester College, you won’t find a ‘typical’ Pilgrims’ boy. In small classes with teachers who are subject specialists, Pilgrims’ is a place of outstanding personalised learning and teaching. We maximise the progress of every boy across our broad curriculum, co-curriculum, and extra-curriculum. Preparing boys for top senior schools Boys leave Pilgrims' for the country's top senior boarding schools, including Winchester College, Eton College, Charterhouse, Radley, Marlborough, Sherborne, and leading senior boarding and day schools. On average, over a third of our of boys gain a scholarship or other award to their senior school, including sports and many academic and music scholarships and exhibitions. As a prep school, our job is to ensure that boys are well-prepared so that they may thrive and be happy when they transition to their chosen senior school. Senior schools are looking for academics and a love of learning. And boys with a good character, who have the ability to contribute to school life, whether that be in music, sport, art, debating, drama or chess, to name but a few.

We offer a diverse winter and busy summer schedule to suit any level of ability or commitment. Our elite indoor squads have extra sessions to maintain our prowess in National Finals. Our Semester One Varsity Day, with both men’s and women’s matches against St Andrews, is always a day to remember that everyone gets involved in. We have a vibrant social scene, with socials and events throughout the semester, giving squads the chance to mix and friendships to blossom. Our annual Casino Night and Ball are some of the biggest nights of the year, and are a chance to dress up in the name of charity. There is also the opportunity to participate in various intramural sports, such as football, netball and hockey, if one sport isn’t enough for you! Our men’s and women’s 1st XI squads play at the highest standard in the BUCS Northern Premier divisions, while the rest of our squads play throughout Scotland. 2022 saw the exciting addition of a women’s 2nd XI and a Social XI, making our club even bigger and better than ever! Established in 1993, GLL is the largest UK-based charitable social enterprise delivering leisure, health and community services. Under the consumer facing brand Better, we operate 258 public Sports and Leisure facilities, 88 libraries, 10 children’s centres and 5 adventure playgrounds in partnership with 50 local councils, public agencies and sporting organisations. Better leisure facilities enjoy 46 million visitors a year and have more than 650,000 members. GLL exists to make community services and spaces better for everyone. In practice, that means investing all surpluses back into providing quality leisure, health and library facilities for the good of the communities where we operate. Alongside our core leisure and library divisions, GLL runs sport and legacy development, health intervention and education, as well as offering the GLL Sports Foundation, one of the largest independent support programmes for talented young athletes in the UK. We are always looking at ways in which to improve the services and facilities we offer and ways in which it can contribute positively to the local community. GLL has come a long way since we started 25 years ago with one centre in Woolwich. We are now a national organisation with centres from Carlisle to Cornwall plus a presence in Belfast and Cardiff. The growth journey has allowed us to become one of the most diverse, inclusive and accessible leisure providers. GLL’s £274m forecast turnover is part of the UK’s £23bn social economy and is challenging private sector providers in the leisure market – showing that a charity can compete successfully at scale.
