This was me 12 years ago, aged 16 and weighing 15 stone and 8 pounds. I battled with my weight for much of my childhood, averaging a weight gain of a stone a year. This had a significant and negative impact on my emotional wellbeing and I became very creative in my attempts to cover the embarrassment I felt about my physical presentation. Not only was my self- esteem on the floor, so was my confidence. I remember Fridays at school very well, it was the day we had swimming which meant having to expose my physical form in front of my peers which I found humiliating and difficult to deal with. This ended with me trying every trick in the book to avoid swimming including skiving and feigning illness. My weight issues impacted on my passion for golf too, during the summer months I continued to wear a jumper in an effort to hide my body. I tried to lose weight through yo-yo dieting, self-education and slimming pills but nothing seemed to work and I was left feeling de-motivated and with my self-confidence at an all-time low. By the time I reached young adulthood, I had become very frustrated with the way I looked and knew that it was preventing me from reaching my full potential in life and I accepted that I had to make changes. I plucked up the courage to join my local gym and have never looked back. It was hard initially, I felt I was being judged by my size and initially the embarrassment did not leave me. All summer I would be training in the gym doing a mixture of cardio, weights and circuit training, this was in addition to playing several rounds of golf each week. My aim was to stay active all summer and this strategy achieved results; pounds were dropping off each week and my confidence grew as a result, I was more confident with the girls and was able to go swimming without being self- conscious.

Autism Bedfordshire’s services help break down the barriers to social participation for autistic people and their families by providing places where they can go and feel comfortable, accepted and not judged by society. With the encouragement and support of specialist trained staff we help autistic people build their confidence, self-esteem, and social skills through taking part in social activities and mixing with other people. Furthermore, we help them to develop practical skills and independence which will improve their prospects in life and help them be part of the community. Our aspirations are for them to have the same opportunities as people who are not on the spectrum, so that they can enjoy fulfilled and rewarding lives. How we can help The physical and emotional stress of looking after an autistic child or adult is a huge strain on the parents and we want them to feel that they are not alone in their struggles. They can come to us for practical advice, information and emotional support so that they will be better equipped to cope with and care for their autistic children and any other siblings. We provide opportunities for them to have a guilt-free break from their caring responsibilities, safe in the knowledge their autistic child is being well looked after by staff who understand the challenges that autism can present. Communities Finally, we raise awareness of autism in the community in order to reduce misunderstanding about the condition. Through training and informative talks we educate schools, local businesses and community groups about the sort of behaviours that an autistic person may display and how best to respond to and be supportive of them. With our increasing presence at community events, members of the public can also become more knowledgeable about and accepting of autism. In this way we hope that autistic people will find it easier to engage with and integrate into mainstream society.

Their well-qualified trainers conduct yoga sessions which can help to reduce the stiffness in your joints and strengthen them for greater freedom of movement. We practice WTF Taekwondo which is represented in the Olympics. Class is taught by Instructor Matt Stein who trained under GrandMaster Fred Lee in the 1970's in London and GrandMaster Dung LeVan from 1980-90's in Bristol. Students from as young as 5 can start their training. The classes are mixed in terms of age and grade with adults training alongside children. The club is run on simple principles both old and new. The five tenets of Taekwondo: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-control and Indomitable Spirit are taught. Matt's approach is serious but not overly strict. The focus remains on technique and practical application of self-defence. It is intended that through repetitive training, the skills and techniques required to defend oneself will be learned. The addition of competition sparring sharpens the reactions and helps to refine technical skills. Not all students want to fight so in this modern era of martial arts they too are accommodated. There are many aspects of martial arts and not all are about fighting. Some students come to boost self-esteem and confidence. This can be achieved simply by participating and refining technical skills. One-step sparring and patterns are a good way to learn this. The Self-defence class has now closed and in it's place is the new Taekwondo Games class. This class is essentially for the younger students to channel their energy into a branch of the art form. The class will consist of an essential warm up of muscles and joints, followed by technical punches, blocks and kicking. This will lead onto a series of fun and lightly competitive games, some solo, others in groups. Light sparring can be done by those who want to. Congratulations to Rowan, Logan and Ava who all reached 3rd Dan grades in April 2022. They have all been shining stars throughout their training and now help in teaching too. They have become wonderful ambassadors to the club.
