Having worked in social care since college, Able Hands Together Founder Laura Tween focussed her work on adults with learning disabilities. After completing her law degree it soon became apparent that the average office environment wasn’t the space for her. She became a social care consultant, and it was through this work that she found her creative energy and passion for community projects was highly suited to being a social entrepreneur. Whilst delivering social care, Laura found that most therapeutic activities for people, like cinema or bowling, were entirely non-skills building. Laura wanted to create an offering where they could learn new skills, build their independence and work on emotional well-being simultaneously. A therapeutic farm service ticked all these boxes. Able Hands Together was established in 2015. The role of the Co-Farmer was soon born, to assist with day to day farm work, building employability, interpersonal skills, independence, and self esteem. Both staff and Co-Farmers work together to care for the animals, & plan and maintain the smallholding to make the most of the growing season. We have just had the exciting news that Able Hands Together has been approved as an Alternative Education Centre by Wiltshire County Council for Co-Farmers aged 18 and over. Laura is immensely proud of Able Hands Together and welcomes you to get in touch. Jason Rhodes Jason Rhodes Director Jason is the Managing Director of Commercial Business at Nottingham Trent University. Jason brings a wealth of business knowledge and advice to Able Hands Together. Jake Tween Jake Tween Director Jake interprets Government Policies on Education to ensure that the advice given by Able Hands Together is of a high standard. He also serves as a great consultant when it comes to the boring paperworky stuff. Nicolette Ann Shears-White Team Member Nic has worked at Able Hands Together for a number of years now and is proud to have a close working relationship with all the Co-Farmers. Having previously been a social worker, Nic is well connected with Hampshire based learning disability professionals and is very knowledgeable about safeguarding and rights. She promotes our Co-Farmers’ independence and works with a skills based approach with our clients. Carl Anderson Carl Anderson Team Member Carl is an ex-member of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. He brings a wealth of skills-based services to the farm. If something needs to be built, Carl’s the man to do it! Our Co-Farmers love helping him to construct and build everything, from goat gates to raised vegetable beds. All staff that support our Co Farmers have DBS checks, are employed with their employment history and references checked. They are trained in safeguarding, Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity. Staff receive ongoing supervision and have access to further training.

Lydia has recently qualified as a Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga teacher and can design and deliver classes for seniors, people in wheelchairs, people with dementia and anyone who finds it difficult to do yoga on a mat. All the benefits of yoga can be made accessible to anyone, this includes: range of physical movement; cognitive ability; bone density; muscle strength; managing stress and anxiety; better sleep and improved confidence and self-esteem. We are happy to travel to care homes, communities or rehabilitation facilitates etc. Or we can offer on-line sessions. Well-being in corporate settings Research by the HSE suggests that stress, depression and anxiety generate around 17.9 million sick days in the UK each year. Eighty-three percent of businesses report people turning up to work who are not well enough to be productive and this costs the UK businesses about £15.1 billion each year (Mind, 2011). Almost half of the UK’s workers report that they have considered leaving a job because of the stress levels with 60% saying they would be more motivated if employers took action to support their mental health and well-being (Mind, 2013 & 2020). Lydia and Doug both teach chair yoga, a form of yoga that can be done at a desk and is specifically designed to target the physical stresses of sitting all day. We are also both trained in teaching a range of mindfulness practices to adults and younger people. When I first started out after qualifying I very quickly recognised a common denominator in a significant proportion of my clients. So often they were presenting with low self-esteem, self-loathing, a limited ability to be kind to themselves, poor body image and problems with assertiveness tending to use anger as a way of communicating or were easily intimidated/bent against their will. Furthermore, I was working with a lot of clients who were clinically obese or painfully thin and I learnt very quickly that even the ones presenting with normal body weight were often abusing themselves by self-harming, substance abuse and poor diet. This is frequently coupled with difficult, challenging relationships with themselves and others, and they were commonly using food/alcohol/nicotine or other mood-altering substances to self-medicate. These early observations lead me on my first steps along the special interest path of eating disorders. In 2007 I trained as a Master Practitioner in Eating Disorders and Obesity at The National Centre for Eating Disorders (NCFED) and after qualifying I went on to become a Registered Supervisor. Over the following years through my specialist work, I built a solid reputation of being a caring and approachable therapist. I have an innate ability to very quickly put clients at ease at the same time as getting directly get to the heart of the presenting issues and work collaboratively to get the job done, whilst supporting the individual to move into psychological health and to live the life they deserve to live. After many years of established private practice work I began to turn my attention to an area I had often experienced as lacking when working with clients. Very frequently it became apparent that clients were experiencing a lack of awareness when it came to eating disorders from GPs, general counsellors and other relevant first points of contact. In response to this I began developing training sessions for professionals to begin to bridge the knowledge gap. After several years of running successful training alongside my practice, I have taken the decision to focus largely on the training side of my work. I do continue to supervise the work of practitioners seeking support in the field of eating disorders and people in larger bodies, as well as offering breakthrough sessions for new clients and undertaking family support work.

High Scope High Scope is an approach to early years education that has at its core the belief that children gain confidence, initiative and a lifelong love of learning when involved in well-supported activities of their own choosing. A consistent and flexible daily routine which provides for child and adult initiated activities. Opportunities to choose, plan, carry out and reflect on their activities Opportunities for children to engage in the active participatory learning process Adults who value and appreciate children and provide a creative and supportive learning climate Forest school Forest School is a child-centred inspirational learning process, that offers opportunities for holistic growth through regular sessions. Forest school supports play, exploration and supported risk taking. It develops confidence and self-esteem through learner inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting. Its roots reach back to the open-air culture seen as a way of life in Scandinavia where Forest School began. Reggio Emilia The Reggio Emilia sees children as curious individuals with the power and potential to develop and learn from their environment and the relationships they build with others. Children are viewed as strong and intelligent individuals who should be given every opportunity to reach their potential. Children are viewed as having unlimited potential and being eager to interact with and contribute to the world. The learning process is considered to be of much higher importance than the final product. Teachers create in-depth projects based on observations, information from parents and the interests of the children.

We also hold two competitions each year: an open tournament in Spring around April and in Winter in November. We also have a squad of students who regularly compete both here in the UK and overseas at national and international levels. Social events are held throughout the year where students and families from different locations can meet and get to know one another. Our club has an ‘open door’ policy, so if you are affiliated with another style, club or association, you are welcome to come and train with us and there will be no pressure to join. We hold classes for children (aged 5 – 12yrs), teens & adults, and mixed age group classes where the whole family can train together as well as specialist senior grade classes and private one-to-one tuition. Throughout this time we have continued to support our learners and this is why we are able to carry forward with the continued provision we have delivered over the last two decades. As a training provider we have continued to provide our service within Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire working with Young People and Adults, Inspiring them to know that no career is off limits because of their gender, race or background. we aim to help disadvantaged people to gain practical training to assist with their employment prospects supporting a more equal and diverse work force and bring greater collaboration with an inclusive work place. Many of our learners have not worked since leaving school or are non-attenders currently of school age. Self-esteem is often very low. By providing taster sessions within different areas of the building trade. This allows the learner to gain knowledge and the choice to concentrate within a particular field; they may ordinarily have not had the opportunity. We home in on their strengths and build on them. This leads in many cases gaining an apprenticeship, securing a college course or employment. Since our team were made redundant from Learning World in November 2012, we have made it our sole aim to keep the continuity we have successfully maintained over the years as training providers. We secured funding, from the Big Lottery, Young Start and Investing in Ideas. This has allowed us to buy equipment and resources to provide correct and current training for the learners within our centre. We managed to secure the premises with our Landlord before Leaning World closed their doors at the end of October 2012. This has provided us the start we need to carry forward our work within the East End of Glasgow and continue to build our relationships with other agencies, for example; Education Services; Activity Agreements Officers and Integrated Children’s Services, East End Regeneration, and more recently Forestry Commission Community Woodland Trust, to help provide a tangible Green Legacy, as well as the Youth Circus, as part of the Commonwealth Games. Our aim as a training provider is primarily based on passion not profit. Seeking to deliver a stepping stone for our learners who live within areas of high unemployment, deprivation, addiction and social exclusion. As well as, working with young people who have been excluded from school, and are being cared for away from the family home. Often this means we have to address the local gang culture, within Glasgow, South Lanarkshire and surrounding areas, as we bring together the Young People into training centre.
