My name is Ian Flint and I am a pianist and piano teacher with over 25 years professional experience in music. After reaching the semi-finals of the “BBC Young Musician of the Year” competition, I went on to study for six years at the Royal Northern College of Music with the renowned Russian pedagogue Sulamita Aronovsky (founder of the London International Piano Competition). Therefore there is something of the so-called ‘Russian School’ in my musical DNA, with its focus on richness of sound coupled with economy and effectiveness of physical movement. During this period I appeared frequently as solo recitalist, chamber musician and concerto soloist in concert series and festivals, with a wide repertoire including major works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninov, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Barber etc. I also took part in masterclasses with Paul Badura-Skoda and Denis Matthews. For my post-graduate studies I was awarded a scholarship from the Countess of Munster Trust. These two years continued the focus on piano performance, combined with a thesis (a re-evaluation of Rachmaninov’s 1st and 4th Piano Concertos). It was also at the RNCM where I gained my first experience of teaching the piano, which I have carried on since, in combination with a career in the music publishing industry. My former company (Edition Peters) collaborated on various projects with the two main examination organisations, Associated Board (gb.abrsm.org) and Trinity (www.trinitycollege.co.uk), which gave me a valuable insight into the philosophy of the examination systems. In recent years I have given piano performances and lecture-recitals for “The Rachmaninoff Society” in several countries, in venues such as London’s South Bank Centre and New York’s Juilliard School.

Born in St.Ives in Cornwall in a flat on the Fore St, a stone's throw from the ocean, Daniel worked in theatre, film and TV for 10 years, most notably at the ground-breaking Citizens Theatre in Glasgow. In July 2002 he created Theatre of Wine with Jonathan Warren, David Simmonds and a lot of helpers. The name came about through the fusion of two loves - theatre and wine - embodied in antiquity in a single entity, the god Dionysus. The shops are a stage for our wines, and at our weekly tastings we let these characters interact and reveal their personalities. While the team has changed, the philosophy is the same: to give a stage to wines that have something interesting to say.

Ouspensky who bought Colet House, just before the Second World War. Ouspensky’s successor Dr. Francis Roles registered The Study Society as a member based organisation in 1951. Afterwards, Dr. Roles introduced non-dual philosophy and mantra meditation to Society members through a direct connection with His Holiness Shantanand Saraswati (1913-1997), a leader of the ancient Advaita (which means ‘not two’) Vedanta tradition in India. In 1963, Dr. Roles introduced to Study Society’s members another expression of non-dual philosophy through a unique relationship with Mr. Resuhi, a senior Sheikh of the Mevlevi Dervish order in Turkey. Mevlevi Turning (whirling dervishes) was inspired over 700 years ago by the poet Jalaluddin Rumi. The Turning has been taught and practiced at Colet House for over 50 years. Today we blend sacred traditions with modern teachings and expressions of non-duality which can be sourced across multiple cultures. As Rupert Spira, a Direct Path teacher, long-term member and friend of The Study Society says: “non-duality requires no affiliation to any particular religious or spiritual tradition. All that is required is an interest in the essential nature of experience, and in the longing for love, peace and happiness around which most of our lives revolve.”
