Better Training works in partnership with Abingdon and Witney college (Officially the most successful college in Oxfordshire) to achieve excellence through professional and modern training methods to deliver a blended learning experience. In September 2021 the College awarded us the title of " Outstanding provider " which was a great achievement in a very difficult year. What does Better Training Provide? Better Training has been providing Maths and English courses to the forces for the last 15 years. The tutors are very experienced, enthusiastic and sympathetic to your needs. We know that many of you struggle with these subjects for one reason or another and it is our aim to make your time with us as painless as possible. If you need a Maths or English qualification please click on the Calendar link where you will find information on where and when the courses are running. You will also find the details of whom to contact. Any service personnel, Dependants, Reservists, Civil Servants and supporting staff can attend these courses at any base. What to expect The courses we deliver vary in length depending on the difficulty level. GCSE Maths and English courses are each 10 days long with the Functional Skills Maths and English courses each being 5 days long. To enable us to provide a targeted and streamlined delivery, you will be asked to carry out a diagnostic test as part of a pre-course learning package. This will highlight areas of strength and also the areas that need to be developed. Making Futures is a social enterprise working with a wide range of groups to improve health, wellbeing, self-esteem & employability through creative arts. Making Futures CIC is the latest addition to the DT Craft & Design family. Debbie has been quietly running Making Futures for several years, teaching and producing training materials, mentoring and working with community groups. As it has now ‘grown up’ we thought it should have its own website so welcome to our new space here on the web. The DT Crafts shop is, of course still very much available, with an ever-increasing range of products (and a need for more storage space!). It’s still just the two of us looking after you so expect the same personalised service and attention to detail here as at the shop. Debbie will still be answering your emails and questions (no ‘bots’ on our sites!), taking workshop and course bookings and discussing your requirements for courses, groups and projects. Speaking of which, we are thrilled to announce that we have joined the Artybird flock and we are delighted to be able to offer two amazing, professional distance learning knitwear design programmes – both accredited by City & Guilds. We’ve produced a short video and prospectuses for each programme which you can find here. And for those of you who may not have met us in person or are new visitors, we’ve done a short video about Debbie and how DT Crafts and Making Futures came about, here. CareerDays.co.uk was founded by former teachers who often came across students unsure of which career to go into. Career advice plays a big part in a students school life but we found many students often had no idea what career they wanted and were ill equipped to make that decision without experiencing each one beforehand. Many of our students would, for example, decide at 17 that they were interested in medicine but had no idea of the intricacies involved in applying or even if their skillset matched a job in the field. Similarly we've had students from an early age determined to go into a career without having gained any work experience of it to ascertain if it actually might be for them. We started in 2014 by running medicine work experience days and since then we've grown to incorporate several other careers that students would benefit from gaining work experience in and learning about, to help make their decisions easier when it comes to choosing a potential career. We have set about forging relationships with key industry figures and today have an extensive network of professionals that we can call upon to help run our courses and offer the best advice and advantage to our students. We formed CareerDays.co.uk to offer students the chance to experience a career that may be of interest and give them an honest insight into the field so they can decide to commit to it or to look into alternate careers. Either way offering some valuable information to them in order to help them make the right career choices.

Helping small and start-up businessesOur Founder Nikki started her business at the age of 23, in her final year of university. She hit upon an unmet demand for clothing and lingerie to fit bigger busted girls. She had no prior textile or business experience, but knew there was a market for the product. With almost no cash, she set out to launch her start-up business but hit multiple challenges along the way – not understanding how to promote her business online, how to generate sales, run online ads or manage her own SEO, and no budget to pay someone for help, she had no choice but to figure it out through a matrix of failed experiments, free online information and training workshops where they were affordable (and not many were!) Eventually, one sale became two, and two became ten, and within a couple of years the business took off – by 2010 Nikki had been awarded the Natwest Everywoman Artemis Business Award and in 2011 appeared on Dragons Den, securing private investment of £250,000 after the show had aired. This enabled her to scale her brand, re-shore production to the UK and eventually culminated in running a factory in Preston with over a dozen machinists, and supplying her brand to the high street. But her frustration remained around the lack of practical help and support for startup business owners. Training courses seldom left her with any usable information to implement – they would talk about the benefits of Facebook marketing, or SEO, or Social Media but never gave enough information to actually go and do it yourself.

Voluntary Action North Lincolnshire (VANL) is a Registered Charity and a Company Limited by Guarantee, governed by a Memorandum and Articles of Association adopted on 19th March 1997, amended on 7th October 2004 and again on 4th October 2007. The date of Incorporation was 1st April 1997. A Board of Trustees (15 in total) directs the policy and management of VANL. The members of the Board are Directors of the Company for the purpose of charity law. They are elected from the membership, or can be self-nominated as individual representatives if they have specialist skills that will complement the make-up of the Board, to serve for three years. They can also be co-opted annually if there are vacancies. VANL’s purposes are the advancement of education, the protection of health and the relief of poverty, distress and sickness. These aims are pursued by bringing together voluntary and statutory organisations in Council and by encouraging co-operation between organisations. VANL is a Council for Voluntary Service (CVS). Its core work is to support, promote and develop the voluntary and community sector (VCS) within North Lincolnshire. As well as its core activities for members, at any one time VANL manages a variety of projects running on both a small and large scale. VANL needs to evidence its work in five key areas, these are: Services and support to promote VCS effectiveness: ranging from typing and duplicating facilities to advice on charitable, organisational and funding matters, and community accountancy. Liaison: encouraging networking between groups within the sector and between the VCS and statutory and private sectors. Representation: through facilitating forums and other groups to ensure views are put forward on local policies. Development work: identifying gaps in service provision and working with the VCS groups to develop new services to meet those needs.
