I’ve been painting and drawing pretty much as long as I can remember. I count my self as very fortunate to live in this little corner of Essex on the Thames Estuary in an area which is so visually diverse. I hope to express something of its life in my paintings. I’ve got the estuary at the end of my road with and over the last few years my paintings have been based on my experience of the world around me.

At SlamFresh, we believe poetry can make a big difference to young people’s lives. But the need to create a nurturing and supportive environment in which to write has never been greater. Although the popularity of the art form, particularly spoken word, continues to grow on an unprecedented scale, last year, for the first time in our country’s history, poetry was nearly made an optional GCSE subject. As well as this, the recent closure of schools has meant that young people from lower economic backgrounds have been put at an even greater disadvantage than they already were. Cut off from schools, many of these young people simply have not had the space or resources to access creative opportunities, at a time when they need them more than ever. SlamFresh is a CIC based in the Newcastle upon Tyne which aims to address these problems. We run workshops that focus on the contemporary styles of spoken word and slam poetry, styles of writing which we have found can engage some of the most reluctant students. SlamFresh work in partnership with schools and community centres to mentor young people in writing, editing and performance. We have 3 company directors, Rowan McCabe, Michael MacDonald and Jeff Price. Rowan McCabe and Michael MacDonald (stage name Donald Jenkins) also serve as the two primary facilitators for the workshops, although guests may be brought in on a freelance basis where required. The directors met through their work as professional poets. Collectively, they have spent over 40 years working with children and young people.

I am a self employed artist, tutor and workshop leader. My personal working practice is figurative, incorporating my own dance movement language and working from other models and figurative imagery in the out comes of drawing, mixed media, art works, painting and printmaking. I have recently began to explore sculptural mediums and working with clay and throwing on the wheel. I am particularly inspired by the visual narrative gained from documentary and fashion photography and use my own and sourced photography as a visual aid. I currently I am currently teach and facilitate a regular figure and life drawing class, which is of a good standard. I enjoy tutoring adults as well as joining in with drawing and allowing others valid input into the group. I also run family Saturday morning art workshops at ocean studios which have included experimental painting and fun painting and drawing games, narrative book making, clay tiles, printing, marbling, badge making etc I also own my own portable printing press and can lead monotype, dry point etching and Collagraph print-making. I recently completed a year-long ‘defining practice’ course at the Newly School of Art and I endeavour to continue developing my own artists practice as well as working within the community in diverse ways, whilst drawing upon my wealth of experience. I am also keen to make drawn portraits of people at community street events. I continually visit and enjoy art exhibitions, live music, arts cinema, dance performance, theatre, comedy, street performance.

Karin has delivered painting and drawing classes for many years with the first lecture being over 30 years ago at Brighton Art College. Since then she has run worskhops in UK/Italy/France/Mallorca and has been involved here at home with more formal post 16 school education, Pre degree foundation and BA Hons courses. Her work has been shown in galleries in London, Sussex and is in private collections around Europe.

In January 2022 a core group of the members constituted a local community group to provide ongoing support and aftercare for those facing adverse life circumstances. Providing volunteer and employment opportunities within Tameside, Greater Manchester and beyond, The Power of Resilience is now incorporated as a Community Interest Company to continue to fulfil its aims of building emotional, mental, physical, social and spiritual resilience in the community. Since January 2021 Julie has been supported by a fabulous team of volunteers. A number of these have sat on the Executive Board for the community group. Two of these have now joined Julie as Non-Executive Directors for the CIC making joint decisions and planning its direction and reach.

New Life on the Old West will deliver wildlife habitat enhancements in green spaces and surrounding countryside within areas close to the Old West River in the Cambridgeshire Fens. The project will create a series of small-scale habitat improvements – ponds, scrapes and wildflower meadows – in the arable landscape, the extensive ditch network and community green spaces. Together, these improvements will create a more resilient landscape in the Cambridgeshire Fens; connecting dispersed species and habitats, while creating demonstration sites for others to learn from. The project will help ensure that a wider range of people can access and enjoy the local fenland countryside. Through a diverse series of events and a dynamic volunteering programme, we’re building a stronger connection between people’s green space assets and the biodiversity on their doorstep. The three-year programme has been developed by Cambridgeshire ACRE, working closely with over 50 local and regional organisations, specialists, and community groups.
