Leeds

The spirit of the Centre’s aims has remained unchanged for over 100 years: Swarthmore seeks to inspire lives through friendly learning within a commitment to equality of opportunity Swarthmore is a centre for lifelong learning, community projects and family learning sessions as well as the courses and activities. Our main aim is to encourage people who want to learn but might not feel comfortable in more formal educational institutions. We work on a friendly, human scale. Many volunteers currently support the Centre’s work, and we welcome their contributions of time and energy. The Centre was founded by members of the Quaker movement in 1909 with the aim of including and involving people in learning activities and making sure that people were treated with equality and respect. Two members of the Society of Friends remain on our democratically elected ‘Council’ of Trustees, made up of Centre members and representatives of community organisations with shared aims. Swarthmore is a not-for-profit registered charity, and a company limited by guarantee. Our Grade II Listed Building has a fascinating history and is made up of six four-story terraced houses with additional dance and art studios to the rear. We have specialist facilities for pottery, jewellery, stained glass and sculpture, and the atmosphere is intentionally homely and informal. We also work within the local community on negotiated projects, including arts and ‘Skills for Life’ programmes. Many groups and individuals make use of the Centre as a community resource, providing facilities for a wide variety of local groups. Swarthmore attracts a social mix of people who come to the Centre because of their shared interests in learning rather than their background. We offer room hire at competitive rates, and welcome the public to use our café facilities. If you would like more information about the centre, SWARTHMORE’S CENTURY; A LEEDS EXPERIMENT IN ADULT EDUCATION, 1909–2009 by Tom Steele is an authoritative look into our history.

Darleen is an Empowerment Coach, with qualifications in Professional Life Coaching and Hypnosis, as well as years of experience as a safe space facilitator. She is also constantly focusing on broadening her knowledge in many different areas. Making her incredibly resourceful when working with clients. She was born in Germany but raised in Portugal for most of her childhood. At 18 years of age, she took a leap and moved to the UK in the hope to find purpose as she had always felt out of place. At the time, she didn't know where she was headed or what for, all she knew was that her intuition was telling her to jump... Seven years have passed since the day she set foot in England. Since then, she has moved 7 times and explored many different career paths. It has been a roller coaster, but one worth going on. Darleen always felt drawn to spirituality but was afraid of being seen as crazy. So one of her first spiritual eye-openers was a book called The Celestine Prophecy, by James Redfield. From then on, small and big encounters have shaped her beliefs and shown her that she was not alone on this journey. When she attended her first Women's Circle in 2019 (held by Ella Grace Denton), all the judgment, competition and fear she had felt towards and from other women in her life was replaced by love, respect and compassion. It made her feel so abundant and helped her realise that we are all one and that we do not have to go on this journey by ourselves. The moment she arrived home that day, she knew it was something she would love to facilitate for others, as she always wanted to help people. After months of avoiding her intuition (as we are conditioned to do) she finally gave in, looked past the fear of judgment and began to hold space for others. She also began to coach people, as well as share all the knowledge that life has given her via Instagram. Now she has fully committed to her calling, aiming to help her soul clients in every way possible.

HARROGATE

As a comprehensive academy our main aim is to ensure that our students achieve their potential – from Year 7 through to Sixth Form and beyond. We are very proud of our excellent reputation in the local community, as well as the wider areas of Leeds and the surrounding villages, and pride ourselves on the quality and breadth of education that we provide. We make principled decisions regarding examination entry, choosing to support the learning needs of the individual. Rossett School consistently achieves good examination results at both GCSE and in our Sixth Form. We are justly proud of our 'destinations data' that places Rossett School well above the North Yorkshire and national averages. In practice this means that all our Key Stage 4 students sustain their education, employment and training when they move to the next stage of their education. We expect all students to strive for continual improvement within a supportive culture that exhorts them to be Responsible, Resilient and Reflective learners. As an inclusive school, we expect our students to have the highest standards of behaviour, to respect diversity and to understand global citizenship and equality of opportunity. Our students are well-prepared to achieve future success once they move on from school, with the vast majority of our students going on to university study locally, nationally and to Oxbridge after Sixth Form. We are also delighted to be able to assist other schools in the region through the sharing of good practice and we are pleased to be one of the original partners within the Red Kite Teaching School Alliance, a cross-boundary affiliation of high achieving schools in North and West Yorkshire. The most important partnerships to us however, are the relationships built between school and home, where together we can most effectively prepare and support our students to achieve all that they can. Rossett School has high aspirations for every child and we endeavour to inspire ambition for all. We work hard to develop and innovate our learning and teaching experiences and put inspirational and inclusive learning at the heart of all we do. We continually advance our curriculum to be responsive to student need and skills for life. We work in a global twenty first century context, and invest in the professional development of our staff to keep ourselves at the cutting edge of education. In short, we want everyone at Rossett to be ambitious and to always aim high.

Parkside School

West Yorkshire

Welcome to Parkside School where we are proud of our track record of enabling young people to achieve success and we are proud of being a fully inclusive school supporting students with a range of special educational needs. Parkside School is based in the village of Cullingworth on the edge of Bradford where we are a part of the local community. It is therefore important that we impact visibly and substantively on that community helping every member of our school, both students and staff, become the best that they can be. Excellent partnerships for learning are key to our success. Our students work hard, behave with consideration and show respect for others. We offer an exciting curriculum, personalised to meet the needs of individual students and we augment this with an ever-growing range of extra curriculum activities and opportunities. In addition, our Aspire-2B programme is a nationally acclaimed programme (National runners up and outstanding school of the North of England) that develops our students to become global citizens ready to embrace the 21st century. The Leeds City Region is a city region in the North of England comprising Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield. The Leeds City Region is vibrant, exciting and diverse with a rich history that cuts across industry, commerce, culture and style. We not only need to prepare young people for working in the capital of the north and its surrounding area but in industries that are only just developing and in roles that currently do not exist. Research in the Journal of Education suggests that better informed teenagers are likely to make more advantageous careers choices and this in turn can be linked to higher earnings in adult life and that is why excellent preparation for the future is part of our mission statement. I have been a science teacher for over 20 years and a senior leader for more than 15 years, working in multicultural and diverse schools across both Leeds and Bradford. As headteacher I have an absolute passion and commitment to inclusive education as a way of improving the life chances of young people and their families. I believe that this is done through delivering the highest quality teaching and learning, whilst developing the whole young person in terms of their character, skills and ability to show resilience to the ever changing and challenging world around them. Excellent personal development in central to this.
