Hello there and thank you for stopping by my website. My name is Meg Brettell and I couldn’t be more excited about sharing my story and everything I know about health and fitness with you. Hopefully it will inspire and help you on your own fitness journey. Fitness has always been a part of my life. Both my parents were or had been in the fitness industry at some point and I grew up being a part of every sports team and club at school. Dancing was a large part of it and I went on to study professional stage dance at college after school. I had danced since I was 3 and It had always been my dream to be a dancer until I injured my back in my final year of tuition. So I taught dance and cheerleading to primary and secondary girls for a couple of years before it was back to the drawing board and with the love of health and fitness and wanting to help people,I went down the trainer path. I first done my exercise to music and my gym qualification then onto my Level 3 personal training certificate. In 2013 I was looking at bikini and fitness models and competitors online in America and said to my old man “I want to look like that!” And his response was “great, go do it.” Without any knowledge or experience in this field I set out to do my research. I started looking at shows, competitors, supplements, training, how to cut, how to bulk, stage tan, bikinis, shoes… the list was endless. I hadn’t thought about a coach before as didn’t know they existed then (now everyone and their gran seems to be one). My dad was a bodybuilder in his teens and early 20s so asked him for a little help. And by little he told me if I was looking okay or needed to be leaner. Very funny when I look back now.

I have particularly enjoyed my recent work with the UK Armed Forces Spouses in a Personal Development programme I designed for them, as they are not only facing multiple transitions, but also have the added stresses which comes with having a serving spouse. Becoming a coach I hold both a Bachelor of Science Degree with honours (Monash University, Melbourne) and a Graduate Diploma of Environmental Management (Deakin University, Melbourne), I spent over a decade making a difference in the environmental sustainability field in both Australia and the UK. Empowering groups and individuals through facilitation, I made a natural transition to the coaching world, and undertook research into the impact of combining sound facilitation techniques with coaching. I use this very powerful combination to create bespoke group coaching and training programmes for my clients. These programmes alongside one to one coaching inspire my clients to reach their full potential in any direction they choose: career transition, creating space for their own wellbeing, focusing on family or pursuing lifelong goals. My depth of global experience across many sectors such as policy, strategic planning and on the ground action informs my already systemic way of thinking. Wide travels combined with expat experiences on three continents have nurtured my empathy and curiosity. I take every opportunity to be involved in projects that will make a real difference to people’s lives.

The Armed Forces Network (AFN) started in Sussex in 2011 and is a multi-organisational group which includes members from the NHS, MoD, Armed Forces Reservists, Mental and Physical Health Clinicians, the Royal British Legion, SSAFA and other interested charities and organisations from across Sussex (i.e. police and local authorities). In July 2016, this model was rolled out to Kent and Medway and is commissioned by the Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) across both Sussex and Kent & Medway. The members work together to improve the lives of the Armed Forces community (ex and serving personnel and their immediate families). The AFN also includes Service Champions from a wide range of the organisations across both counties who are advocates for the Armed Forces community and have the skills and knowledge to support through direct service provision, linking with other organisations or signposting to where additional support could be received. It is managed by the Armed Forces Director for both Sussex and Kent & Medway ICBs. Each Network aims to facilitate the ICBs and the local community in the delivery of the Armed Forces Covenant Commitment and the Armed Forces Act 2021. In November 2014, the AFN won a National Military and Civilian Health Partnership Award for its work on education, training and research with local military personnel. The AFN was commended for its work on developing a unique set of relationships to ensure organisations are identifying and meeting the specific needs of the Armed Forces community through local health and care services. The Support Team has continued to develop and deliver a range of resources, many of which are contained within this website. These included a wide range of CPD and other accredited courses, factsheets, flip tools of contacts, topic area specific pathways. This continued growth has been recognised in the national Soldiering On Awards where the Network was been a finalist for two years and a winner in 2020.

In 1921, the Louisiana State Normal School, which initially offered a 2-year degree program to prepare educators, began offering a 4-year educator degree program and was renamed the Louisiana Normal College. In 1944, the further expansion of degree offerings led to the school’s name being changed to Northwestern State College. In 1970, the college achieved university status and was renamed the title it still holds today: Northwestern State University of Louisiana. Ever-growing, Northwestern State also serves the region at its off-campus instructional sites in Shreveport, Alexandria and Fort Polk.
