weaversbazaar

weaversbazaar

Forest Row

weaversbazaar came out of a shared passion for tapestry weaving when Matty Smith and Lin Squires met for the first time on the 2008 West Dean College Tapestry Summer School. We had both been experimenting with art, craft and cloth weaving and loved using yarns in creative ways. As we progressed through that hot summer week, weaving and talking and talking and weaving, we not only discovered many shared life experiences but also a common sense of fulfilment in the process and outcomes of tapestry weaving. However, once away from West Dean, we faced a serious challenge - how to find high-quality yarns in just the right colours needed for the tapestries we wanted to weave. After much research, a supplier of high-twist worsted yarn was found and then a dyer who was able to match-dye from just a one-inch colour sample...and at that point, we began to think about whether this would be a product and a service that other textile artists would be interested in: weaversbazaar was launched! The products and services we offer have grown in popularity: our original range of six colours have grown to over 200.The fine 18/2 yarn we started with has been complemented by two medium-weight worsted yarns (7/2 & 9.5/2). In addition, we have extended the range of yarns offered to include both dyed and undyed Nettle, Silk and Linen. We commission the manufacture of equipment that cant be found else where and a year ago took on a studio space in which we run workshops. In doing all these things have establish relationships with diverse textile artists arounfd the world and to communicate regularly with our growing community; sharing information and news that we hope both interests and informs. And our own weaving has continued to develop. Lin and Matty are both active members of the British Tapestry Group, the American Tapestry Alliance and the Canadian Tapestry Network and relish opportunities to get together with other tapestry weavers and textile artists to share ideas. Everyone who contributes to weaversbazaar is a textile maker. Matty retired from weaversbazaar in April 2020. But we continue and Rachel Hanney has joined Lin to continue to develop weaversbazaar. Our mission remains to be the place to find quality yarns and reliable, to provide a personalised service and to facilitate creativity and especially Tapestry Weaving as a contemporary art form.

London

Founded in 1971, it is one of Canada’s first artist-run centres and its oldest media arts centre. We are a not-for-profit, charitable organization. For 50 years, Trinity Square has been a champion of media arts practices. Our activities are guided by a goal to increase our members’ and audiences’ understanding and imagination of what media arts practices can be. Trinity Square strives to create supportive environments, encouraging artistic and curatorial experimentation that challenge medium specificity through education, production and presentation supports. As video-based practices have become increasingly present across disciplines, Trinity Square engages artists and curators in critical investigations into the changing conditions of perception, materiality and the virtual. We consider all of our artistic activities and structures through a process of critical self-reflection, continuously evaluating the ethical positioning of our programming, jury structures, inter-organizational relationships, et cetera. In addition to holding aesthetic worth in its own right, our artistic programming extends our education and production activities in order to generate new knowledges. Trinity Square’s programming is guided by three priorities: 1) promoting an expanded definition of media arts; 2) promoting the meaningful engagement of diverse voices in all levels of our operations; and 3) supporting and nurturing the production of new works by artists and curators. Our membership represents the diversity of the city and honours the original mandate of the organization—seeking to reduce barriers to access related to race, gender, sexual orientation, and socio- economic and physical ability.

My name is Anna Robinson and I am the Executive Headteacher and Chief Executive Officer of MARK Education Trust. Our trust was established in 2012, and for the last 10 years has been a trust of one school, Beacon Academy in Crowborough. From September 2022, we are delighted to have welcomed Uplands Academy into our trust as our second school. I was the Headteacher of Beacon Academy from September 2015 – August 2022 prior to becoming the Executive Headteacher from September 2022, overseeing both of our schools. To support Uplands during their first year as an Academy and member of our trust, for this academic year, I will also be the named Headteacher of Uplands Academy. In addition, my colleague, David Callard, with an excellent and sustained track record of senior leadership at Beacon Academy, will also be joining me as our Senior Deputy Headteacher. In addition to bringing additional leadership capacity and experience of school improvement, we are looking forward to working with the well-known and established Uplands senior team, its staff and most importantly our inspiring and incredibly capable students. As with colleagues at Beacon Academy in Crowborough, those of us at Uplands are ambitious for excellence in all we do. Our vision aligns with our trust and that of Beacon Academy. This vision, which is established and sustained, is to provide the best possible education for all our students and to be an exceptional educational establishment for our communities.
