Teaching has always been Lian’s passion. At the age of 18 Lian started teaching dance which developed into establishing her own highly successful dance school Learning Curves Dance which she ran for 20 years. Lian has had numerous highlights during her teaching career from choreographing team performances at London theatres including Her Majesty’s Theatre, Sadler’s Wells and The Royal Albert Hall and Birmingham performance venues such as the NEC and the Symphony Hall. She has also travelled with her students overseas to Europe and Asia performing at Disneyland Paris and Beijing Theatre, China. Lian has trained over 500 students for team performances, prepared over 3000 students for 32 IDTA examination sessions and received Freestyle Scholarship Awards nominations for 5 professional candidates and 18 amateur students. She has judged at numerous ADFP Freestyle Dance Competitions, including the prestigious international Disco Kid Competition at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. Lian was honoured to lecture for the IDTA (International Dance Teachers Association), hosting amateur and professional workshops. She has produced, directed and choreographed over 16 theatre shows, raised over £10,000 for charity, formed the successful Performing Arts Project with sister school StarStruck Performing Arts Academy, taught GCSE dance at Arden School, cultivated successful relationships and taught classes in over 16 Primary and Secondary Schools in Solihull and Warwickshire and launched a second Dance School in Southam, Warwickshire. After further professional development and with a keen interest in anatomy and physiology, Lian qualified to train candidates to professional teacher level. To date she has trained 26 individuals to professional dance teacher status, 5 of whom have received IDTA Scholarship nominations and 1 student who has gained the 2020 John Dilworth Scholarship in the Freestyle category. Now Lian has added yoga to her long list of qualifications and is a Yoga Alliance Professional 250 hour qualified Teacher. Lian enjoys teaching Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga. Lian successfully teaches online and face to face classes. Yoga and dance complement each other beautifully and through her training Lian can bring elements of each discipline to enhance her teaching.

About us In 2013, following many years of working with local young people through martial arts, self-protection as well as life skills training, Richard Pomfrett created ‘Stay Safe! Workshops’. His vision was to help educate and protect as many young people as possible on the subjects of bullying and abduction prevention. It was by starting off working closely with a handful of local schools, that gave him the opportunity to develop and create such unique and effective programmes for both. Since 2013 Richard’s passion for his work as pushed him to continually evolve and shape ‘Stay Safe! Workshops’ to fit the needs of young people today. It is through these specialised and unique sessions, that we aim to educate as many young people as possible. Raising awareness and passing on vital skills and knowledge at key stages in their development and helping prevent them from becoming part of the future dire statistics. The Birth of The Stay Safe Initiative.cic In 2019 ‘Stay Safe! Workshops’ become ‘The Stay Safe Initiative’. To further benefit the community in which we work, we made the decision to take our work from the private sector into the public sector. By doing this, we aim to take the valuable work we do with young people, into building stronger relationships with everyone we work as well as giving us scope to grow and play a bigger role within the community. Growing with the times, The Stay Safe Initiative continues to works with young people on the original subjects of Bullying and Abduction Prevention (Stranger Awareness) but now also provides relevant Internet Safety advice as well as training up many young people within schools to be Stay Safe! My name is Francesca. The following bio may offer some more background on why I work the way I do. I grew up in Italy, but I spent half of my life outside my country of origin. This brought me face to face with the challenges of finding a sense of belonging and home elsewhere. This makes me particularly attuned to cross-cultural dynamics, multi-lingual living and the struggles of understanding who we are in this new reality. My early studies (a degree in International Relationships and Peace Studies) helped me understand human distress from the perspective of power dynamics and systemic oppression, hence why my framework of reference is systemic. A decade later, when I retrained as a counsellor, I combined my earlier studies and previous work experience in the third sector (ranging from supporting victims of human trafficking and refugees to the homeless) to find voluntary and subsequently paid work within a counselling service for people who use substances and are involved with the criminal justice system. Through my time at this counselling service, I understood trauma from a systemic point of view and learned to convey safety and support clients to find it in their life and within themselves. I am now a senior counsellor for a local charity for alcohol use. Since 2017, I’ve volunteered as a counsellor for the therapeutic community Time and Space, supporting people who hear voices, dissociate, and self-harm. My experience here has taught me how to look beyond the labels, centre the person in the work we do together and trust, no matter what, that the person knows best what works for them in their healing journey. Alongside this, over the years, I have nurtured a deep connection with nature, which kinship brought me a sense of connection, dignity and respect that I now extend to the other-than-human beings and world, too (hence why I have embraced a vegan lifestyle).

We are delighted to welcome our new Executive Director Paul Smyth, who comes to us with a wealth of experience and a strong reputation for ground breaking youth work. I am thrilled to have taken up the post of Executive Director with Politics in Action – and I want to start by congratulating my predecessor Patricia O’Lynn on her election to the Northern Ireland Assembly. We live in a turbulent time for politics around the world, nationally and locally – and this makes the work of supporting young people’s role as active citizens more challenging and even more important. We are emerging from a global pandemic which has put unprecedented restrictions on the lives and freedoms of young people, and which has impacted their learning, their social lives, their relationships and for some their mental health. Politics in Action responded proactively to these challenges by moving workshops online and ensuring continuity. I am optimisticwe can return to largely face-to-face delivery of our programmes with young people in schools and other settings, and can find new ways of engaging with more young people and in particular those who are not normally invited into conversations about politics and citizenship. Much of what we already do is in collaboration with schools and with other youth organisations. I see so much potential for additional collaborations that allow our little charity to punch above its weight. One of the many attractions of the role is the excellent Board of Trustees who provide strong governance, leadership and vision for Politics in Action. They bring significant social and political capital to the charity and use it in the interests of young people and our shared future. I would love to hear your ideas about how Politics in Action should direct our energies over the coming months and years. My name is Mike Hawthorne, founder of M-Theory Music. Here's a bit about me: Music has been a central element in my life from as far back as I can remember. Listening to, playing, creating, performing, DJing, producing, and teaching music have all featured throughout the years. While I am a proficient drummer, bassist, ukulele-ist (???), producer, and DJ, the guitar has always been my main instrument. I can't pinpoint where my love for guitar came from, but I do know that I was always drawn to it when I was younger. After getting into metal, grunge, punk and indie as a young teenager, the guitar made even more sense and my love for it grew and continues to do so to this day. I started learning the guitar approx 25 years ago, and very shortly after that, started sharing my learning with my friends. I found that I loved passing on the skills and knowledge almost as much as I enjoyed playing the instrument, and I took my first "proper" student (ie, not one of my friends!) when I was 17. I have been teaching people ever since then. I see it as a vocation and a personal duty to share the love of music with as many people as possible, and I'd still be doing it even after a lottery win! Since 2001, I have had at least one student on the go at any given time. I taught privately for many years, ans then began teaching with a local music service in 2010. In 2015 I was able to give up the "day job" and teach full time, something for which I am eternally grateful. I get to make a living out of my passion, I get to meet and form positive relationships with lots of wonderful people, and I get to share the joy of playing music with them... i keep wondering when i'm going to wake up!
