Jason West is the founder and chief creator of English Out There. He now has almost thirty years of self-employed experience in transformational English language teaching and learning. In 1992, at the age of 25, he co-founded an English language school in the heart of London’s West End and within two and half years the school achieved British Council accreditation (which annoyed a few people!). A long-standing interest in the psychology of learning lead Jason to feel that something could be done to improve the way his students acquired English. As a result he created the English Out There (EOT) course concept, where students engage directly with fluent or native speakers at every stage of their language development. The language laboratory in EOT's case was (and still is) the streets of London and members of the public (recently we have been experimenting successfully with handheld mobile technology and Google+ community pages). A lot of people have helped to create English Out There over the years. The principal EOT lieutenants have been Georgina Moon, Maria Stamati-Knipe and Jonathan Jones whilst Tim Bowen helped edit the materials for publication. After 250,000 hours of teaching and editing English Out There course materials were born. They can be used both offline and on. The online element came out of a fascination with social media and free internet telephony such as Facebook and Skype. An interesting quirk of their design is that they will work with any and all social media platforms, even those not yet invented! The inexpensive DRM-free course materials for students and teachers recently made the EU’s top 10 formal uses of social media for language learning and can be purchased online from this website. English Out There is the only English program we know of that posts 'before and after' audio and video proof of the amazing progress of real students. It is a truly transformational English course because learners who have tried and failed to speak English comfortably for years find that it helps them to break through their personal language barriers. Using just simple file formats and free online social media, allowing teachers to earn money from the use of the content and making it available at an affordable price is important to Jason and the ethos of English Out There (a student's self-study course costs just £9.99 and can change a life because it will teach you how to learn for yourself for free going forward; a teacher's course level, also 20 lessons/60 hours can be printed and taught as much as they like commercially for just £25.00).

The Museum of English Rural Life is owned and managed by the University of Reading. We use our diverse and surprising collection to explore how the skills and experiences of farmers and craftspeople, past and present, can help shape our lives now and into the future. We work alongside rural people, local communities and specialist researchers to create displays and activities that engage with important debates about the future of food and the ongoing relevance of the countryside to all our lives. We were established by academics in the Department of Agriculture in 1951 to capture and record the rapidly changing countryside following World War II. The Museum is based on Redlands Road in a building originally designed by Sir Alfred Waterhouse in 1880 for local businessman Alfred Palmer, of the Huntley & Palmer biscuit company. The house then became St Andrews Hall of Residence in 1911, and in 2005 a modern extension was built onto the house for the Museum. The Museum was awarded £1.8million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in 2014 for the redevelopment of the galleries, reopening in October 2016. The redevelopment strengthens and renews our links with agriculture as well as enhancing our position in supporting engagement opportunities for students and academics across a wide variety of disciplines, nationally and internationally. The MERL and Reading Museum are currently in a strategic partnership as part of the Arts Council England National Portfolio 2018-2022. As Museums Partnership Reading we work together to provide cultural opportunities for Reading’s young people and diverse communities, through schools, volunteering, digital engagement and exhibitions.  ALF is a peer led, grassroots, community organisation that supports those struggling with emotional distress caused by trauma/PTSD, life stress, or ill health, to recover; find purposeful occupation; and become thriving members of their local communities. The ALF team have been working in local communities for over a decade, and our frontline staff have several decades’ collective training & experience in psychology; counselling/psychotherapy; peer coaching/mentoring; teaching & training; peer support; business, social entrepreneurship, & finance, to name a few.  This means we can support people along their journey to recover from emotional/mental health challenges, learn new skills, and become purposeful and integrated members of their community. Since the lockdowns of 2020 we have focused our efforts on creating events and community groups that bring people in the community together in an informal way with an emphasis on supporting people to find meaning and purpose in life, follow their passions, and find a sense of belonging. These are essential things that enable human survival and thriving.  Our core, ongoing project, the Launceston Folk Club, also draws on our experience as musicians, to bring people together twice a month at events where we host nationally and internationally acclaimed musicians on the contemporary folk circuit, offering local upcoming musicians the coveted support slots. Through this venture, we support musicians of all ages to follow their passion for music, develop their music careers, and provide a safe place where all members of the community can help and volunteer, meet and socialise with people, and learn about social entrepreneurship. As experienced social entrepreneurs and practitioners and trainers in the field of emotional and mental health, we can support people to overcome life challenges, progress towards their life goals, gain meaningful occupation, learn business skills, and ultimately thrive. Our courses, workshops, seminars, groups, and events, aim to incorporate this broad wealth of knowledge and experience that we offer.
