The Alternative School offers a holistic and flexible full-time school experience that has been designed to respond to the needs of young people who are unable to remain in mainstream education. Our education programmes can each cater for 40-50 pupils at each of our 4 schools, and is designed for those young people, age 4-18 who require a smaller, nurturing and individual approach to their education. Our pupils may have been excluded, at risk of exclusion, previously home educated, children looked after, SEN, High Risk Assessments, YOT orders, Drugs & Alcohol misuse, school phobic, victims of bullying, mental health needs or requiring an assessment placement. We supply the following assessments in order to tailor make what we need to meet the needs of pupils: Dyslexia Screening Education Psychologist reports Speech and Language Boxall Profile CAT Scores Literacy and Numeracy Learning Styles Our open school admissions policy offers any young person who requires some additional support the opportunity of a fresh start and access to personalised education. We are an Ofsted & ISA registered and approved independent school with current Good with Outstanding Leadership and Management Ofsted report. The Alternative Approach The Alternative School, known as TAS (pronounced TAZ), is a small independent school which specialises in providing an innovative, inspiring and nurturing educational experience and environment for young people who, for a variety of reasons, are disengaged and/or unable to access main stream education. We work closely with a number of local authorities, schools and children’s homes and parents/carers to support young people to become the best they can be, to achieve appropriate qualifications and to make a positive post 16 transition. Established in 2007, TAS achieved a ‘good with outstanding’ Ofsted report in June 2014 and then achieved Independent School Association accredited status in October 2014. In line with the ethos of the Independent Schools Association we work with the whole person aiming to develop each individual via ‘Character Education’, developing character traits such as grit, resilience, ethics, commitment and other soft skills that ISA schools equip pupils with. We have a strong emphasis on Personal and Social Development, British Values, Emotional Literacy and Employability Skills together with the Duke of Edinburgh Award and a variety of extra-curricular and enrichment activities.

The most useful training is often as much about enabling individuals to grasp new opportunities to play to their strengths, as it is about helping them to become more aware of ‘new thinking’ that is sometimes necessary to help them challenge areas that they were previously unaware of. He has a passionate belief in people’s ability to learn and change and this comes across in his enthusiastic, trusting and empathetic style. Sean Liddell is an accredited MHFA (Mental Health First Aid) Suicide First Aid (City & Guilds) and Mindfulness practitioner and coach. A naturally empathic motivator, Sean utilises his coaching skills and conversations to challenge and embed learning to effect positive behavioural change. He has helped hospitals within the NHS, school teachers and students, university lecturing staff as well as other organisations experience the benefits of Mindfulness. He has also mentored young leaders from the commonwealth through the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust. He spent twenty years in a corporate role as an Associate Director for Lloyds and HSBC where he developed his leadership skills in sales, marketing, and communications. He was also appointed an official mentor to the Queen’s Young Leaders (QYL) mentoring 2 future leaders from St Kitts and Nevis and Grenada in the Commonwealth. The QYL was established through The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, in partnership with Comic Relief and The Royal Commonwealth Society as well as speaking at international conferences. Glenbervie Kindergarden has been established for and providing care to children from birth to primary seven for almost 20 years. Each of our settings are unique and all offer the same high quality of care and education that our parents expect. The settings have all been refurbished quite recently to a bright, modern standard and all facilities are well resourced. Within our settings we offer a child centered approach, we encourage the children to be involved in their own learning and their achievements celebrated. Our staff create happy, caring and stimulating environments in which each child can develop, build confidence and can become more independant in their own right. For our younger children we have a range of baby and toddler rooms, designed to nurture and support the development of each individual child. For our older children in the Explorer rooms, we offer a breadth of learning experiences, where our skilled staff are confident in enhancing and deepening the child's learning. Our out of school Clubs offer fun, stimulating environments where children can socialise, play and relax before or after a busy day at school. Our nurseries and out of school facilities put a strong emphasis on learning outdoors and all settings have their own outdoor areas to support and extend your child's learning and exploration. Adventures outwith the gardens include visits such as, the local park, the library, garden centre or other landmarks, this helps to build the child's sense of connection with the local community. Our staff team have a wealth of experience and qualifications and are all registered with the Scottish Social Services Council and have up to date PVG checks. To ensure staff are well equipped to support the children's learning and development, staff undergo continuous professional development. A high percentage of our staff team are first aid trained, with us working towards all staff being trained in this. As well as our own staff we work closely with other professionals such as health visitor, social work, speech and language, educational psychologist and other various agencies. Within our settings we promote healthy eating, our snacks are varied and interesting and lunches can be provided by an outside catering company, who follow the current 'Setting the table' guidance. Parents also have the option to provide their own child's lunch. We are in Partnership with Falkirk Council and can provide up to 1140 funded hours for eligible children.
