Edinburgh

Hi, I’m Kathryn and I run antenatal courses and workshops along with baby and postnatal classes in Edinburgh. I teach weekly pregnancy classes and birth and baby workshops, which focus on combining antenatal education with birth hypnosis and breathing techniques, movement for pregnancy wellbeing and active birth and are a great time of the week to focus on you, your pregnancy and your baby. Weekly classes are a great way to help you enjoy a positive pregnancy and meet up with others local to you and at a similar stage in pregnancy as you prepare for your confident birth. I also teach Tinies and Wrigglers daisy baby classes which as well as offering baby massage, yoga and sensory play are all about coming together with other new parents to meet, chat and learn – navigating the journey into parenthood together. What I particularly love is seeing expectant parents meet at antenatal classes and continue with daisy baby classes until 10 to 12 months postpartum offering a real connection and community and seeing friendships grow. My classes are with you every step of the way, as are the community of daisy parents around you connected in class and online to always be there to support you. For everyone that is looking for evidence based information, delivered live and interactive (both online and in person) in a non judgemental space with other like minded new and expectant parents you are in the right place! As a local Mum of two I know just how much of a huge transition it can be becoming a new parent and I am passionate about supporting parental wellbeing and passionately believe in the value of peer support. We’ve all heard the saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ and daisy is all about building your village! I trained with The Daisy Foundation in 2013 and have been teaching for daisy classes for over 7 years working with hundreds of parents and families from throughout Edinburgh and the Lothians. I am also a voluntary peer facilitator and lead Positive Birth Edinburgh, as well as being a trained Slingababy Baby Wearing Peer Supporter and a proud member of Edinburgh Birth and Baby. Details of all my upcoming classes can be found here and please do follow me on facebook and instagram where you can find out more about what’s going on, all the latest news and how to connect with our amazing community of parents. If you are thinking about joining a daisy class, course or workshop you should find all you need in the my classes page and I’m really happy to chat if you would like to find out more, have any questions or want to check any upcoming dates – just message me and I will be happy to help. I look forward to meeting you and supporting you on this exciting journey, whatever stage you are at.

Karen Bryson Pilates

Brìgh (pronounced bree) is Scottish Gaelic and has several meanings including strength, essence, substance, energy, significance, moment, point and sense, all of which are so appropriate for the practise of Pilates. The fully equipped studio is a calm and inviting space where everyone is made to feel welcome and offers dedicated, specialised Pilates tuition from experienced qualified teachers. You can choose from a timetable of matwork classes and with small class sizes there’s plenty of personal attention. All classes are friendly, fun and non-competitive for beginners through to advanced. Traditional open studio sessions are also offered for all levels of experience where you work to your own individual programme using the large studio apparatus, a system similar to how Joseph Pilates ran his studio. Private 1-1 tuition is available if you require more time and attention perhaps following injury and rehabilitation, or if you have specific athletic targets. Pregnancy and postnatal sessions are also available. About Karen Karen is an Accredited Member of The Pilates Foundation which runs the most extensive and rigorous teacher training programmes in the UK, qualifying both as a matwork and apparatus (comprehensive) teacher with the Foundation. Karen also qualified from the Lolita's Legacy comprehensive teacher training programme and as such is a 3rd generation Pilates teacher. Lolita's Legacy is the teacher training programme of Lolita San Miguel, a 1st generation Pilates teacher and one of the Pilates 'Elders' who trained with Joseph Pilates. Karen also holds a specialist certification in pre-natal and post-natal Pilates and is a member of the Guild of Pregnancy and Postnatal Exercise Instructors. Complimentary to this is the Adore Your Floor specialist pelvic floor coach training which Karen completed in 2019.

TEACHING: A teacher to me is on the one hand an enabler, someone who assists skilfully in the learning of another without claiming to be anything more than a facilitator. I aim at empowering students to own their experience and process and find their inner teacher. On the other hand, a teacher is someone who through practice, experience and study reached a level of knowledge and understanding which when it is shared enriches someone else's experience. I enjoy sharing what I've learned and keep studying a variety of subjects, practising with my teachers and learning from my students. A central dimension of my teaching is space holding. Holding space is like externalising mindfulness into 3D: creating a space of presence, awareness, trust, clarity, empathy, curiosity, and non-judgment for a person or a group. YOGA: I believe in the power of a yoga practice because - both as practitioner and teacher - I have experienced and witnessed significant shifts in inner as well as outer state and the experience of being alive. Firstly, it is a system that is based on ethical principles. It offers multidimensional practices ranging from movement and postures to concentration, relaxation and meditation all of which promote awareness, healing and training of our physical body, our breathing, our energetic body, our senses, and our mind. There is something for everyone. To connect to ourselves, we need to spend some time with, get to know and begin to accept, respect and love ourselves for who we are. My intention is to teach in a mindful way putting awareness first. The main teaching focus are breath- and heart-centred practices with accompanying movement and postures - yoga from the inside out. There are various studies that prove the positive effects of conscious breathing on psychological and physiological healing and a calmer state of mind. The techniques become tools that serve your personal journey and enrich your life. A yoga class also offers the opportunity to connect with and support each other without words or touch but through sound and breathing. THE FEMALE BODY: Since my first pregnancy yoga teacher training, I have gone on a journey of discovery around topics specifically relevant to the female body experience. It is a fascinating, beautiful and sometimes intense field of work. The intensity comes from the fact that the changes pre- and postnatally on a physiological, mental-emotional, practical and spiritual level can be incredibly challenging yet the mainstream message is to 'just get on with it' and 'to get your body back'. My intention is to bring women together, to hold space for their experience and offer useful practices for their special state of health. To deepen my knowledge around birth and to be able to offer more support for women and supporting men, I took a doula training in 2016. The more I learned, studied and experienced in this field, I realised that there is a lack of awareness around the importance of a healthy pelvic floor for general wellbeing alongside with shame and lack of opportunity to talk about issues like incontinence, prolapse and pain. I am passionate about doing my bit to change this by offering pelvic floor workshops for women. Another reality in a female body is a menstrual cycle and menopause. There is beautiful wisdom to be had when these female life and monthly cycles are embraced. Living as if we didn't have a cycle leads to ongoing underlying stress and a plenitude of health issues. In the era of the #metoo campaign, it is more evident than ever that there is a lot of trauma in women's bodies and hearts. I hold women's circles and half day retreats based in yoga which are a safe place to be and share.
