Whether it was singing karaoke, listening to audiobooks, or devising a radio station in his bedroom, Mark has always appreciated the power of the human voice. His love for radio started at a local level, in the glory-days of personality-based breakfast radio. That love affair was sparked at his city’s famous BRMB, but a succession of cost-cutting measures, takeovers, and technological advances would slowly snuff out that candle. Episode one Mark studied Media & Communication at Birmingham City University, specialising in Internet radio. He graduated the year the term “podcasting” was coined, but it would be a further four years before he’d pluck up the courage to pick up a mic and plug it into the Internet. But in 2008, the podcast bug finally bit, and Mark started what would be a 14+ year career helping people make podcasts, first in exchange for beer, and then for money. The little company with the robot fist for a logo In 2016 Mark founded the media hosting company Podiant, which took him to the British Podcast Awards, and saw him present at International Podcast Day in 2020. The product served millions of listeners across thousands of podcasts, and in 2021 Mark sold Podiant so he could focus on working more closely with individuals and small teams, to set them up for podcasting success from day one. From the ear to the brain to the heart Mark founded Origin in 2021 to help impact entrepreneurs build trust with their audiences, and catalyse change. He does this through a combination of consulting, training, coaching, and production. Building on Betel UK’s 25-year track record as a national charity helping the marginalised, homeless and addicted, Anchor Point will address head-on the hardships of social exclusion, substance dependencies, family breakdown and unemployment in one of Britain’s most under-resourced urban wards. The three-fold vision is: to create a thriving community hub that integrates seven family-friendly businesses, each serving the public, that simultaneously deliver a range of employment skills and addictions- recovery training all under one roof. Anchor Point will offer a safe, welcoming environment to residents and university students of greater Aston where they can flourish. Hundreds will enjoy an impressive restaurant serving homemade food, drinks and baked goods, affordable arts performance and fitness training, a children’s softplay arena, a gender-neutral hair and nail salon, catered banqueting, plus multi-purpose meeting and conference facilities for hire. All these diverse activities inter-link, sharing one 40,000-square-foot building just outside the boundary of Birmingham’s Clear Air Zone. When compared to most other social inclusion models nationwide, Anchor Point’s multi-purpose skills training sets it apart as truly exceptional. All seven social enterprises will be staffed by recovering Betel residents, each a member of our successful, therapeutic, work-based recovery model. This means that Anchor Point not only promises essential socialising for scores of city-wide youths and families. But it will also serve as a healing, restorative workplace, helping men and women to break with substance and welfare dependencies alike. Together, the businesses will simultaneously train for future employment more than 60 men and women in the process of rebuilding their lives and families after years of life-controlling drugs and alcohol addictions, homelessness and criminal offending. This is upsetting for the staff and volunteers who look after them, at this much loved family learning facility (open daily). Donations are being collected through crowd funding to make the site secure, so together we can stop the abuse. Funding has been attracted by Retrofit Balsall Heath for up to 700 homes. Deadline for return of applications is Wednesday 23 November . Delays and even disappointments are possible with a free scheme, but “if you don’t ask, you dont get”. There’s no household income cap, or requirement to be on benefits, but the scheme is for older homes with poor energy rating (D,E,F,G EPCs). The scheme is completely free for eligible owner-occupiers. Private landlords need to pay a one-third contribution. A 3-page form needs to be filled in by the resident to apply and agree for a surveyor to visit. These can be got from BH Library, Baths, BH Children’s Centre, Jericho Foundation. If enough people vote Yes, the new council will be set up and the councilors recruited. They will then draw up a plan and a budget and set the “precept” (a small charge) to pay running costs. There is a new webpage that tells people more about the case for setting up this new structure, separate from Birmingham City Council, (but working with it of course) to power up our ability to solve problems, find opportunities and get communication and coordination working in our complex and multicultural neighbourhood.
