Angelique and William are both highly qualified with over twenty years experience in their trades of ceramics sculpture and metal work, with many of those years teaching others . Pottery box was created from the vision they have always had of being able to share their skills with others so people can learn how to find their own inspiration and create for themselves. All this is achieved in tranquil and beautiful surroundings. Animal encounters evolved when children came to the pottery, who where struggling with learning difficulties, we would find they loved to see the animals while they where visiting and benefitted from the experience greatly.  Realising Just how great the combination of the two can relax you and reduce anxiety.

Since 2018, we've welcomed participants from the UK, Europe, and as far as Australia to our workshops. WORKSHOP DETAILS * Location: Abi Higgins' beautiful rural studio and grounds in Christow, Devon, South West UK. Easily accessible from Exeter, which has both an airport and a train station. * Accommodations: A range of local B&Bs and other accommodations are nearby for your convenience. WHO SHOULD ATTEND Our two-day workshops are perfect for ceramicists of all levels: * Those with limited or no previous knowledge of alternative firing techniques. * Experienced ceramicists looking to expand their skills with new techniques. WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS * Types of Clay and Making Techniques: Learn about the different clay bodies suitable for alternative firings and various making techniques. * Raku Glaze Application and Firing: Explore the process of raku glazing and firing. * Burnishing and Naked Raku: Get introduced to burnishing techniques and the two-step naked raku process. * Horsehair/Feather Firing: Experiment with adding unique effects using horsehair and feathers. * Saggar and Barrel Kilns: Make and fire a 'mummy' saggar, prepare pots with plant decorations for saggar firing, and load and fire a barrel kiln. MATERIALS AND PREPARATION * Bisqued Pieces: Participants should bring suitable bisqued pieces, either sculptural or vessel forms. Prepared pots are also available for sale at £10 each. * Detailed Information: Information on types of clay to use and bisque temperatures will be provided with booking confirmation. My pieces are formed intuitively and often with abstract representation. Elements of the local coast, wild estuary and working port often emerge, in particular the ever changing silvery estuary tide and rugged textures of the surrounding natural landscapes. Remembered fragments of my wandering travels, my playful inner child and a career working therapeutically with people are also key influences, often seen reflected in characters, metaphor and suggested emotion. I hand-build from slabbed and coiled clay, mostly white or black stoneware, fired to high temperatures. I often leave sections unglazed, or decorate with matte tactile finishes. I'm also licensed to hand-dig and process a limited amount of local wild clay which I use as a slip, a glaze addition and as a clay body on smaller items. I love working with this iron-rich red clay, very locally sourced, being harvested less than 100 metres from my studio!
