We hold many different events, where members and potential members can get to know each other, and become involved in all sorts of interesting activities. As a charity that focuses on education and opportunities for women, we are a group of over 8,000 women in Surrey that work together for our common goals. Each WI in Surrey is a member of the Federation and they meet at least monthly to engage in a wide range of interesting activities, including clubs, groups and events. At monthly meetings members enjoy practical workshops and lectures. However, it is important that we also have the opportunity to engage outside of our individual WIs. So as a Federation, we aim to put on events in different parts of the county so that all members have the opportunity to attend. We have a presence at agricultural shows, hold workshops and have two countywide meetings each year in Dorking. Our wide variety of events ranges from literary lunches, a day out in London either for Christmas shopping or for a walking tour with a blue badge guide, fiendish quizzes, cream teas, fashion shows, down to learning new crafts such as portrait painting or willow weaving. Everything is possible and the members are encouraged to send in their ideas for the committees to consider for future events.

Thomas Mills, a wealthy businessman and a prominent member of the Baptist community, is one of the two great benefactors of Framlingham, the other being Sir Robert Hitcham, lawyer. There is no known portrait of Thomas. A Suffolk man, but not a native of Framlingham, Thomas came to the town in 1640 when he became an apprentice to one Edward Smith, wheelwright. Thomas obviously impressed his master, for in due course he inherited the business (1660). In 1662 he increased his fortune considerably by marrying Alice Groome, the widow of a wealthy Pettistree landowner. The marriage appears to have been a happy one but sadly Alice died in 1691, leaving all her estate to her husband. Thomas was a prominent member of the local Baptist congregation. In those days of religious persecution, this was a dangerous course and he narrowly escaped imprisonment on a number of occasions. Clearly, he was a man of principle as well as a man of business. When he died, Thomas left his fortune for good causes in Framlingham and other locations where he had had business interests. His will ordered the building of almshouses for the elderly poor which still stand - Pevsner calls them "a stately range". Unlike Hitcham's Almshouses, Thomas wanted people to be accepted whatever their religious convictions - a remarkable thing at that time.

the holding time project

‘The Holding Time Project’ is a rolling inter-disciplinary, co-created portrait of breastfeeding.The outcomes of the project include writing and performances by breastfeeding mothers, animated portraits as immersive installations, audio tours using narratives and interviews, a Youtube channel and podcast. The project has been shortlisted for this year’s Royal College of Midwives Excellence in Public Health. These courses are designed to help new mothers, or anyone who has recently given birth, an opportunity to create poetry or prose from the experience of the post part period. With a particular emphasis on wellbeing, the process of creating new writing is an opportunity to make meaning form what can be a difficult journey to parenthood. In particular, the struggle to feed whilst recovering from birth, is a time when many find themselves isolated and grappling with a huge amount of new information. Writing, as a therapy can help to locate and identify key moments in this journey, giving the experience shape and definition. Rachel New, our writing coach is an experienced workshop lead with years of writing and radio producing behind her. She designed this series of sessions to help mothers navigate their new landscape of motherhood as a group. These workshops support the wider Holding Time programme, aimed at normalizing breastfeeding, deepening public engagement and increasing social concern for the needs of breastfeeding mothers and those who tried but were unable to breastfeed.

We consider looking after the bees to be a responsibility and we do so in a way that is harmonious with the natural behaviour of the bees. We only take honey that is excess to the bees needs, and make sure they have more than enough honey stored in the hive to see them through the longest of winters. Each hive is treated with special attention and care. BEEKEEPING HAS BEEN A PART OF THE NOBLE FAMILY FOR THREE GENERATIONS... Fred Noble [pictured] was a keen hobby beekeeper for many years. He kept ten beehives in an apiary just a stones throw from Furzedown Farm. He taught son; Deryk the craft, who later on inherited the hives which he relocated over the road into Furzedown Farm Conservation Area. Deryk was a beekeeper for many years and sold the honey that the bees made in the Farm shop. Unfortunately Deryk became allergic to bee stings in the 1980's and consequently was advised by his doctor to give up beekeeping, however he left three hives in a secluded apiary in the woods and left the bees too it.

…I’ve been painting almost all my life, as I didn’t stop when I left school. There were many years when I’d only do the odd sketch or painting as ‘real life’ took over, but I always wanted more. Once I’d made the decision to try to realise my childhood ambitions I gave myself up to it as completely as real life would allow. It’s taken a long time, but now I make art part of my daily life. Even though …It’s now ‘the job’, I still get a big kick out of drawing and painting. There’s nothing better that looking at what you’ve achieved and see it looking back at you. Knowing exhibition sales help with animal conservation is another bonus, but it’s equally exciting to get a pet portrait commission from someone, as it is to sell something in exhibition. A lot of my time is spent teaching art, mostly to retired people. I Believe …art plays a very important role in keeping people healthy. As a teaching Artist, I want to share my life-times experience of art with other people so they can enjoy it too. My workshops and classes are growing in popularity and it’s very satisfying, knowing people are choosing to learn from me. I’d toyed with the idea of teaching art for many years, but it wasn’t until after my dad died that I decided to give it a go.

EMMA BROUGHTON I am a Wiltshire-based RSN trained Embroidery Tutor, Author, Artist and fabric designer with expertise in hand embroidery, fabric dyeing, screen printing, and digital fabric design. I am a graduate of both the Royal School of Needlework Apprenticeship (2009) and the University of the Creative Arts (2012). In 2019 my book 'Embroidered Boxes: Techniques and Projects' was published by Crowood Press. My passion is creating unique designs for embroidered boxes and specialist embroidery kits. I sell and teach my design online and in person classes independently, for the Royal school of Needlework and the Embroiderers' Guild of America under the name Fairy Wren Embroidery. In 2023 I was given the honour of being awarded a Developing your Creative Practice Grant by the Arts Council England to fund a Blackwork Portrait project which I am extremely passionate about. I have recently been accepted as a RSN Fellow, which is the school's new professional association for tutors and other alumni to celebrate their commitment, skill and passion for embroidery.

Our mission at Diamond Sportz is to give children and adults a chance to access high-level martial arts and sports. Children's first sporting experience is so important as it can influence them to go on to better things if taught properly. This is done through upskilling teachers, instructors and sports coaches in how to deliver high-quality PE and martial arts lessons. Portrait painting of Master Gilbert Graham and his students About Master Gilbert Graham My name is Senior Master Gilbert Graham and welcome to Diamond Sportz. I am a qualified school teacher my specialist subject is physical education (PE) I'm also a martial arts instructor and I started training in Taekwondo in 1986 at Panther Taekwondo, I gained my black belt in 1990 and wanted a new challenge, so I started going on different coaching courses to increase my coaching knowledge. While studying for my teaching degree I joined an organisation called Teachsport. With Teachsport, I went on to develop a school's martial arts program which involves going into primary schools and teaching children taekwondo and fitness. Once I graduated from University, I decided to introduce martial arts as a PE option to our Teachsport programme to help children with their coordination and confidence. We now run numerous after- school clubs throughout London and the south east, covering a range of different sports. I have recently gained the status of vice president at Panther Taekwondo and Song Moo Kwan England my duties include safeguarding and wellbeing of students and instructors. I now work in schools in Haringey, Lewisham and Redbridge teaching PE and supporting teachers in how to deliver good to outstanding PE.
