At EarthCraftuk we have over 12 years experience delivering a variety of nature based programmes including: Forest School Leader Training, Woodland Skills Continued Professional Development Workshops, school visits, youth accredited engagement programmes and experiential Forest School programmes; witnessing first-hand the transformational effects experiences in the natural world can have on the physical and mental health and wellbeing of all participants, and the fulfilling career paths it can often open up for adult participants. At a time when we on average spend 90% of our time indoors, our work at Earthcraftuk is driven by the evidenced impact of being in nature. Green spaces promote physical activity, social interaction, exposure to sunlight and reduced pollution, which all boost health in various ways, including reduced levels of stress and anxiety, aided sleep and a feeling of connectedness with the world, and one another. We have trained over 400 participants on Forest School qualification programmes; worked with a number of community groups; supported school and youth experiential and accredited programmes and also developed a Campfire Management Award for Kent County Council and now also working with Veterans on our Health & Wellbeing programme called Veteran Trees We are very grateful to use stunning private woodland owned by the Dawes family of Mount Ephraim Gardens – a philanthropic family who support our mission.

We are honored to announce a NIS 50 million gift from the Kadas Family Charitable Fund to support the creation of an International Faculty Initiative of Global Climate Change, with an initial emphasis on marine and coastal ecology research. The largest one-time donation in the University’s history, the gift will be used to create a virtual community of scholars, spanning universities and research centers across the globe. This project, will begin with an initial focus on waterways in general, and on the Mediterranean, in particular. “The Eastern Mediterranean Sea hosts more than 17,000 marine species and contributes an estimated 7% to the world’s marine biodiversity. Today, this rich ecosystem has come under threat from climate change, pollution, over- fishing and coastal infrastructure projects,” explains Prof. Dan Tchernov, Scientific Director of the University’s Mediterranean Sea Research Center of Israel. “The generous gift from the Kadas Charitable Fund will be crucial in predicting the ongoing effects of environmental and climate change in the rapidly changing Eastern Mediterranean basin, with the ultimate aim of using this research to predict the impact of climate change on other waterways and coastal regions. A consortium of global universities and research centers, employing virtual technology, will offer online educational modules, and employ cutting edge technology to create virtual research platforms untethered by geographical location. Each and every one of the nodes in this venture will think local, but act globally.”

Let me tell you where it all started! I have always had a fascination for our environment. Fossils and nature intrigued me and I went on to study geology at university. For many years I worked as an exploration geologist then a hydro-geologist. I learnt many things, including how delicate and fragile our environment is, and how important it is that we respect it. It made me think about where our drinking water comes from, where it goes to and how vulnerable our water supplies are to pollution. I discovered that pollutants from everyday household rubbish can easily (and quickly) end up in our drinking water, and many of these pollutants are readily bought off the shelf in our local supermarkets. It made me really start thinking about what and how much I was throwing away. Then I became a mother! After the birth of my son, I became even more interested in how our environment, and the products that we use, could affect our health. I discovered that we are surrounded by an increasing range of toxins, carcinogens, and irritants in common use around the home, garden and workplace. Products we eat, breathed or put on our skin every day! I was horrified and decided that something had to change. So I started looking for solutions and GreenLifeOrganics began. I believe that our health and our environment are interlinked in ways that we will never fully understand, but if we strive to improve our environment, then there is a good chance that our health will benefit. And if we all make small changes towards leading a healthier and more sustainable life, then there is a good chance that our environment will benefit.

Long Beach, the 7th largest city in California, is on one hand a city of great resources: culturally rich, boasting beautiful ecological features, and home to esteemed higher educational institutions. On the other hand, it is a city of great needs: facing high levels of poverty and its multiple effects, environmental pollution, and rising housing costs. Over the years, Long Beach has become “a tale of two cities,” where certain neighborhoods are characterized by the benefits and resources of affluence and other neighborhoods are bearing the brunt of low incomes, decreased resources, and the challenges of communities of poverty. *Slides & facts courtesy of the Long Beach Community Action Partnership, LBCAP.org Long Beach’s areas of affluence—concentrated primarily on the east side of Long Beach– are characterized by high annual median family incomes, longer life expectancy, higher employment levels, and overall community safety. Children have access to a vast array of resources that promote their development including high-quality schools and after-school enrichment programs of diverse types, excellent access to health care, and safe spaces to grow up and recreate. Areas of critical need are concentrated primarily within North, West Central, and Southwest Long Beach. These neighborhoods experience high levels of poverty, exposure to environmental pollutants, and low levels of educational attainment. Families and children in these areas face great barriers in accessing health care resources, support in early education and educational attainment, and affordable arts programming. These neighborhoods also contain the largest concentration of children in the city.

Just Space is an informal alliance of around 80 community groups, campaigns and concerned independent organisations which was formed to act as a voice for Londoners at grass-roots level during the formulation of London’s major planning strategy, particularly the London Plan. Everyone is affected by planning but the planning process is technical and often daunting for the majority of people, even though the issues themselves are readily understood: housing, green space, jobs, transport, pollution, and so on. The aim of Just Space is to improve public participation in planning, to ensure that policy is fairer towards communities – in a system dominated by the interests of developers. The Just Space Network brings together a wide range of groups, some with a London-wide remit (such as the London Tenants Federation, the London Forum of Civic and Amenity Societies, Friends of the Earth), others locally based community groups (such as Latin Elephant and Ward’s Corner Community Coalition). The Network also has links with some of the Universities in London (e.g. UCL, CASS and LSE) whose staff and students provide research that the network presents alongside their own grass roots evidence at London Plan hearings or in other contexts. We work by supporting our member groups and spreading information further afield. Groups collaborate and coordinate in making representations to planning authorities, share learning, research and experience through workshops and publications. As a result of this engagement people have come to understand how political these planning documents are and how much they influence many of the key issues that groups are focused on such as health inequalities, targets for relevant housing, progress on environmental issues and pitches for gypsies and travellers. Members of Just Space continue to monitor and expose contradictions in the London Plan, and other planning policy. Just Space is developing further work with communities, including people who have not been much engaged before. Workers at ABP’s Port of Ipswich are plugging in to an e-bike trial scheme with Suffolk County Council. The council’s Way To Go Suffolk team, which helps people to travel sustainably, has launched a scheme for businesses where employees are encouraged to ditch the car and try out an electric bike free of charge. Employees can choose to trial commuting for a week at a time with some of the bikes, whilst others are used as pool bikes allowing staff to pop out at lunchtime for a break and some exercise. The Port of Ipswich is the first organisation to get involved with the scheme, having taken delivery of eight e-bikes for a trial period of three months. The bikes are supplied by e-bike rental provider Hurrecane. They have a range of around 50 miles and, other than punctures, are covered with a call-out service for any breakdowns and repairs. They are different to conventional bikes as they are powered by a battery to assist the rider, increasing the distance that someone can cycle. The council is initially looking to work with organisations that have at least 50 employees and are based in a large town environment. Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is one of only three dedicated children’s hospital trusts in the UK and provides integrated healthcare for children and young people, including community and mental health care as well as acute and specialist services. We see children from 0-16 in most cases and in some cases up to 18. We provide a full range of services for residents of Sheffield and South Yorkshire as well as specialised services for patients from across the United Kingdom. Caring for patients across the UK Demand for our services is growing and we are increasingly delivering healthcare to patients over a wider geographical area as our reputation for providing outstanding specialist care grows. We have some of the best medical and surgical services for children in the country. In 2021/22, 210,439 patients attended an outpatient appointment (including over 25% virtual appointments). A further 60,720 children attended A&E. 26,255 Mental Health community contacts were made across the Sheffield region and 23,341 COVID-19 vaccines were provided to protect children, young people and staff. Provider collaborative for CAMHS Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is the NHS Lead Provider for the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Provider Collaborative for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). Provider collaboratives are new regional partnerships of organisations that provide specialised mental health services. These partnerships are being established across England as part of a national programme of work that sees the responsibility for the commissioning of specialised mental health services transfer from the NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSE/I) Specialised Commissioning team to the new regional provider collaboratives. Established in 1997, The Mersey School of Anaesthesia (MSA) is principally concerned with preparing Trainee Anaesthetists facing their Primary & Final FRCA Examinations. Originally held within a Charitable Trust Accounts at Liverpool Heart & Chest and Aintree Hospitals, it was advised by the Trust Account Managers that it should be moved and run as an independent Charitable Company. In 2012 the MSA registered with the Charity Commission (Reg. No. 1149165). Income is invested back into the Courses that the MSA run and at the end of each Financial Year, any surplus income is donated to Research, Education and Patient Care charities, these mostly of an anaesthetic texture in the UK or used to support Volunteer Anaesthetists in various Charitable Ventures Abroad. Overall, by the end of March 2021, the MSA has donated a total of over £900,000 to such concerns, all of it by reason of candidates’ subscriptions to our courses and classes allied to the full support of those Anaesthetists, who contribute as Faculties to those Courses without expectation of recompense. The Courses are designed for Exam Preparation and include; – Exposure to Exam Style Questions – Opportunities to Practice in as close to Exam Conditions as we can muster – Learn & Fine Tune Exam Techniques – Peer Learning The advice to Trainees is that they should attend MSA Courses only when they consider themselves adequately Prepared, in terms of knowledge, for the Imminent Examinations. The MSA’s emphatic advice regarding all the FRCA Examinations is that trainees should only sit these examinations when they feel that they Deserve to Pass. It has to be courting Disappointment to enter for these exams Hoping to Pass We also fully appreciate our methods do not suit everyone’s learning style, therefore, you must feel assured before attending that it will help you in your Exam Preparation and subsequently embrace the ‘gameplay’ we offer. We are very conscious of Trainee’s valuable time and want to make sure you make the best use of it. Not everyone finds the same approach useful. We are happy to answer any questions that you may have, but also advise you to speak to Colleagues who have been to MSA Courses in the past to ask them the questions: ‘Why they would recommend?’ and ‘How did the Course help them?’. Supporting Lifebox… The MSA also contributes to Lifebox, an international charity concerned with the improvement of Anaesthetic Services in underprivileged parts of the world where the mortality from General Anaesthesia can be unacceptably high due to a lack of suitable equipment or adequately trained personnel. To date this specific donation is over £35,000. In 2016, conscious of plastic pollution, the MSA stopped distributing Bottled Water to Candidates at Registration to the Courses. Instead, we invested in a couple of AquAid Water Coolers to be used on the Courses and asked Candidates to bring their own refillable bottle. With each purchase of a Water Cooler Refill Bottle an automatic donation has been made to the Africa Trust. We are delighted to be informed that, as a result, these funds have helped to build an ‘Elephant Pump’ in Africa to provide a much needed source of clean & fresh drinking water for many in the community. Thank you to AquAid for providing an excellent service and for giving us the opportunity to help those less fortunate than ourselves.
