David has nearly forty years of educational experience as a teacher, senior manager, local authority consultant and school improvement adviser. His work with individual and groups of schools across the UK and abroad is always focused on ways of achieving improved outcomes for pupils through the professional development of teachers. David has been a Harper Collins author at primary and secondary levels for many years and his Primary Connected Geography framework published in 2016 was highly commended by the Geographical Association and was his third such publications award. The corresponding Primary Connected History scheme was published in 2018. As well as Geography and History David also has particular expertise in developing Education for Sustainability (encompassing environmental education, global citizenship and outdoor learning) and associated sustainable schools programmes. In addition to his national programme of Geography and History training David also provides bespoke support to individual or federations of schools and to subject leaders across the United Kingdom and internationally. The Economics, Business and Enterprise Association (EBEA) is the professional subject association for everyone interested in the teaching and study of Economics, Business and Enterprise. As a registered charity the association seeks to: provide members with professional support promote the teaching of Economics, Business Studies and Enterprise encourage curriculum development in these subjects The EBEA has been supporting teachers since 1937 when it was formed by Economics teachers as ‘The Economics Association’. With the development of business education in the latter part of the twentieth century and a growing interest in encouraging enterprise, the association became the Economics, Business and Enterprise Association (EBEA). The EBEA has played a significant part in the development of economics and business education in the UK in terms of both curricula and pedagogy. The association publishes both a termly journal, ‘Teaching Business and Economics’ and a monthly e-newsletter. Journal articles provide both practical guidance and evidence-based ideas for professional development. As an archive going back many years, indexed by subject, they represent an important ‘body of knowledge’ fundamental to business and economics teachers’ scholarly activity (SoTL). In addition, over the years, the EBEA has published or contributed to all the key texts setting out the latest thinking on subject specific pedagogy and curriculum planning. The association supports the development of new teachers through its Initial Teacher Education Group, members of which come from all the main ITE PGCE providers. Each January the association runs an online new teacher conference full of tips and guidance for trainees. Trainee teachers receive a heavily discounted subscription, giving them access to guidance and resources specifically aimed at their professional development. Through our advocacy work on behalf of members, the association also plays a vital role in working with key stakeholders such as DfE, Ofsted, Ofqual and others to ensure the school curriculum keeps up to date with the needs of young people. Over the years, that has included both consideration of the business and economics curricula at a subject level as well as whole school economic and financial literacy and the development of employability skills. The important work of The EBEA is heavily reliant on voluntary input from members ready to share their knowledge and expertise for the good of young people. Without such unselfish work, we believe, the learning and development of young learners in our subject field would be all the poorer and the nature of a good business and economic education determined by distant policy makers and bureaucrats. Exceed Worldwide, with partners, has established Schools of Prosthetics and Orthotics (P&O) in five countries in Southeast and South Asia – Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, the Philippines and Myanmar. With the exception of the Philippines, our Schools train Prosthetist Orthotists to International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) Category 2 standards. The Philippines School trains students to ISPO Category 1 standard. In addition, our Cambodian School trains P&O technicians. This course has been recommended for ISPO Category 3 accreditation and is awaiting certification. Exceed works closely with ISPO to gain and maintain international accreditation standards and all of our P&O schools work closely with key partners, including government ministries, institutions of third-level education disabled persons’ organisations and other NGOs, to ensure that programme curricula comply with national standards and that graduates of P&O schools are recognised as health care professionals who can be integrated in national health systems. Places at our first, internationally-acclaimed school in Cambodia (established in 1994) are offered to students from other lower and middle income countries and this school will offer a course at ISPO Category 1 level from 2021. DEVELOPING CLINICAL SERVICES Courses at each P&O school focus on theory and practice, with a strong emphasis on practical training in teaching clinics which emphasise the importance of establishing and delivering care to national and international standards. Exceed P&O centres provide high quality, free or very low cost physical rehabilitation services for people with disabilities. ADVOCACY We work at grass roots level with teachers, community leaders and families to encourage understanding of the needs and abilities of children and adults with disabilities and promote their inclusion in local communities and society in general. We also collaborate with national and international resource holders and policy makers, including national governments, ISPO and WHO, to ensure that equal rights and the inclusion of persons with disability is high on the agenda. COMMISSIONING ACTION-BASED RESEARCH Lack of hard data and high quality research on the impact of disability, the needs of people with disabilities and the design, development and assessment of support services is a critical issue. To address this well-documented research and data deficit, Exceed has founded and co-ordinates the Exceed Research Network (ERN), an international research consortium involving universities, NGOs, P&O businesses and eminent social, P&O and engineering researchers and practitioners from these sectors. ERN is a young organisation, but Network partners are already carrying out applied research to address a range of P&O and disability issues. OFFERING COMMUNITY-BASED REHABILITATION Exceed Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) activities reflect ISPO and WHO guidelines. Our community teams focus on the identification of people with disabilities who need support, referral for treatment at Exceed centres and follow-up support. This support enables children, young people and adults with disability to access education and training, gain employment or start small businesses. We also work with community projects that directly address poverty and the exclusion of people with disabilities from mainstream development assistance. DEVELOPING NEW APPROACHES TO SERVICE PROVISION 80% of those who need P&O services do not have access to them. Resources are scarce and Exceed believes that the future provision and expansion of P&O services to an adequate level will depend on creative co-operation between governments, the private sector, NGOs and donors to develop new service models. Exceed believes that social enterprise (a business that uses its profits for social impact) will play an important role in this mix and has launched Exceed Social Enterprises as a vehicle to access private wealth to support charitable services.

I live on the edge of the Cambridgeshire Fens for many years, right between the flat fenlands to the east and the first gently rolling hills to the west. It’s a fascinating place, immensely rich in history and with many nationally important nature reserves. Kathryn Parsons My work flows from my love of nature, small details and place combined with a life-long delight in exploring craft techniques. It’s an adventure driven by curiosity and a desire to seek out and share some of the fascinating stories of this amazing planet and the people who’ve lived here… because stories help us connect with places and each other, which is good for humans! And feeling connected also means we’re more likely to cherish and protect biodiversity and heritage. My deep grief for the damage that the natural world is sustaining adds drive and reason. Found in the Fields, detail As I spend time getting to know a place, delving in to archives and talking with people who know it best, I search for stories that capture my attention and which I think will fascinate others too. I intentionally allow space for discoveries to guide the final outcomes, and select materials and techniques that best tell the story. Sharing the research and exploration via social media draws others in to the adventure, and so the stories gently ripple out… the land is "re-storied" and people's connections with place and nature are strengthened and enriched. Kathryn Parsons Handcrafts and simple tools are at the heart of my work. I've always loved exploring what I can make different materials and processes do, right from a very young age. To me it's an exciting, fascinating adventure! And so I use a wide variety of processes and materials, depending on what best communicates the story... from eco-printed poems and sugar shoes to photography and mixed media sculptures. To reduce the environmental impact of my work I often use old or natural objects. And in very small quantities I use porcelain too, because for me it speaks deeply of the beauty, fragility and strength of the natural world. Much of my work is created to be displayed as temporary interventions in the place that it speaks about... adding richness and something new to see, while offering new ways for visitors to respond and engage. Kathryn Parsons My first career was in teaching, in primary, further and adult education - including teaching sugarcraft and competing in international sugarcraft competitions! Gradually I learned to listen to my heart, and follow its desire to use my creativity and love of learning to share fascinating stories of nature and place. I delight in nurturing the creativity of others and sharing my adventures through writing, workshops, demonstrations and talks. In 2022, I launched NatureCraft online mini workshops - a space to connect with nature, creativity and other nature-loving people from across the globe. Exhibitions, Residencies and Site-Specific Artworks I have exhibited at The National Centre for Craft & Design (solo and group exhibition), and created site-specific artworks for Burghley House, University of Leicester, John Clare Trust, Derby Museum’s porcelain gallery and on nature reserves. In 2012 one of my artworks was selected for “Inspired by…” exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. See C.V. for more details. Horden used to be a mining village, and back in the Sixties, it was the pit that defined what our community was. Young people were a vital part of that group, and the Centre you see today grew out of the Youth Club that started in 19­66 in the renovated pit canteen — and the Girls' Infant School (later a Mixed Infants, but the girls don't like to remember that part). Horden Youth Club moved from their first building into one on Sunderland Road, and from there to a "hut" in the school playground. When the Infant School closed its doors to little ones, Durham County Council offered the facility to the Youth Club. By the time they were ready to move in, in the late Seventies, rain had seeped into the building and where the pool table now stands in the main hall, a huge hole was dug to make the floor safe and re-lay the beautiful parquet flooring. When the repair and refurbishment was finished, Horden Youth Centre was born. It's all right — the hole was filled in, but if ever we tell you that a former staff member is still here in spirit, please don't ask too many questions… It was decided that two rooms could be offered to other people in Horden and so, for a while, what are now the dining room and training room were used for all sorts of activities leaving the rest of the building for the young people. It was at that point that we became Horden Youth and Community Centre, but it was several years before the "Youth" and the "Community" bits joined together in the way you see us now. Many changes have taken place in the intervening years, not least becoming first a registered charity and, later, a limited company. And now? Regardless of any surface changes, what we are at our core doesn't change at all. Quite simply, we are here to offer pursuits and experiences to the local community which encourage choice and personal development. By keeping costs down and creating a warm and friendly environment, as well as operating an 'open door' policy for anyone who requires help, advice, signposting or support — and often just someone to listen — we strive, every day, to provide a hub for people to become involved with new people and the wider community around them. In keeping with our motto 'from the cradle (almost) to the grave', we offer services for all age groups from the very young to the elderly. Take a deep breath, now… Our Nursery provides affordable child care for 2 to 5 year olds; the tweenies are well catered for with dance and gymnastics classes; the Youth Club caters for 11 to 19 year-olds; there is usually a huge variety of classes and activities for adults; and apart from our Luncheon Club, Friday Afternoon Bingo Club and Gentle Fitness group, we are planning even more events for the over 65s. This will include a Fifties-style coffee bar complete with 'frothy coffee' and period music, so keep an eye on the Centre notices, website, newsletters and local press for further details as we get them! Other future plans include 'Hole in the Wall Enterprises', a social enterprise venture that has grown out of our clippy mat group; open days; fairs (that's table-top sales, not waltzers and dodgems — but you never know!); and, of course, an ever-growing list of activities and courses. We know our past and our present, and are ever-hopeful that we will go from strength to strength in our future. We want people to use the Centre because that's what it's here for. We need to know what the community wants from us, and we need the people of Horden to tell us. We invite you — whether you want to join us and join in, offer your services, or complain that we're getting it all wrong — to come in for a chat any time and help us continue to help Horden — the way Horden wants!

If you’re interested in sewing with us, read on for some class info! Guaranteed small class size of no more than six students so you get all the help you need. Classes are in person and take place in our Dublin 8 studio. All of our courses are suited to both beginners and intermediates as these classes are taught by individual attention, working on your own project in your own time and pace. We provide the sewing machines and supply everything you need to get you started with your first beginner’s project. If there is a project you want to work on you will need to bring all materials, patternwork and requirements of your pattern eg thread, notions, zips etc. If you’re attending as a beginner, you will learn basic machine functions, practice threading the machine and make a small stitch sampler. You will be shown how to insert a zip and make a small bag. Improvers, we can work with you on any project you may need guidance with. From alterations, cushion covers, upcycling vintage clothing, cosplay, cloning your favourite garment or learning how to make your own clothes, we can cover it all. We have a beautiful, bright, studio for you to learn in. There is a lovely sense of community in class, because the group size is small, you get lots of attention in a friendly, relaxed environment. All of our machines are new and easy to learn on. There is also an overlocker for student use and we provide basic sewing kit for you to use. This is a two hour class, from 6pm-8pm, once a week on the same evening each week, for three weeks consecutively. Course fee; €95 When booking a course, please check your dates carefully you must be able to attend all three dates, no refunds once booked. Missed sessions, for ANY reason, cannot be made up, transferred, carried over, refunded or credited. Class availability is extremely limited due to a backlog from the prolonged studio closure and and unfortunately we can only accept a small amount of students per session. However we are not offering such appointments during Covid-19 restrictions. Is my booking transferrable? Your course enrollment can only be used for the dates booked, but you can transfer it into someone else’s name if you can’t make it – just let us know before they attend. What is the cancellation policy? Unfortunately, if for any reason you cannot attend the classes on the date you are booked for, we cannot reschedule it to a new date and there is no refund on classes and workshops. Please make sure that you, or the person you are booking for, can attend before booking a class with us. If you are unable to attend the classes you can give your place to your friend or family member. Please email us at least 24 hours before the course with the name of the person attending in your place. If unforeseen circumstances cause us to cancel the class you will be informed as soon as possible and a full refund will be made. A brief description of who we are, who we aim to be and some guiding principles. In short, we want to be the service we could've done with as teens. We are a collective, this means if you want to get involved with us but feel something below needs to change, we can discuss that. Contact us We are a UK-Based collective made up of LGBT+ Travellers working to provide support, representation and a platform for LGBT+ Travellers. Our focus is both on local action/solidarity and gaining wider recognition for issues faced by those of us in this particular intersection. “Travellers” is used as inclusively as possible. There is enough commonality of experience and discrimination to make this inter-group solidarity important. We still recognise the differences between the groups but believe there is enough shared experience, including discriminations, to make us effective allies for one another and to mean we’re often fighting the exact same battle. We operate on a self-identification policy rather than relying on ethically dubious ideas of racial purity. There is no hierarchy of settled vs nomadic, but we do acknowledge the different issues that can occur as a nomadic/peripatetic Traveller vs a settled one (and again, the difference between settled on sites vs settled in housing). Traveller in this context can mean Romany Gypsies, Welsh Kale, Irish Travellers, Scottish Travellers, New Travellers, Van Dwellers, Boaters, Bargee, Showmen, Circus People. Anyone who positively (but not necessarily publically) identifies as LGBT+ and a Traveller is welcome. We are a loose collective rather than a codified charity because we feel this makes it easier to respond quickly, without as much red tape. Despite this, we want to operate as transparently as possible. To this end: We have meetings at least quarterly, minutes are available to whoever requests them unless we have good reason to believe the request is vexatious or malicious. We do have a bank account & paypal, our finances can be looked at and explained upon request unless we have good reason to believe the request is vexatious or malicious. We welcome scrutiny and will attempt to be transparent when questions are asked of us unless we have good reason to believe the request is vexatious or malicious or if it would infringe on an individual's privacy. We reject the stereotyped oversimplifications of “Travellers are Homophobic/Transphobic”. It can be difficult to come from some more traditional backgrounds among Travellers but there is enough variation within the groups to make this meaningless. We don’t exist because Travellers are bad people, we exist because there’s currently not a space for us at all. This is more because until recently Traveller activism has been focussed on the essentials of survival (a place to stay, access to sanitation) or very base human demands (education etc.) and it is only now that we have wanted to shine light on the diversity within our communities. Equally, we reject the stereotyped oversimplifications of “LGBT+ people are anti-Traveller”. This can be the case, but is not the rule. We aim to provide regular space for our community to meet, network and build links of solidarity. We want to represent LGBT+ Issues in Traveller spaces and Traveller issues in LGBT+ Spaces. Given our particularly inclusive definition of Traveller, we also aim to shine a light on the communities that have been often overlooked by mainstream Traveller activism or Traveller charities. Decisions are made either at our meetings or by consulting with the general steering group “Pridesters”- You may request to join this. We value inter-group solidarity. This looks like actively welcoming collaborations with others and actively challenging prejudice when we find it, regardless of it impacting us. In terms of direct help: we offer outreach phone calls to offer advice and combat isolation, a solidarity fund and logistic help with leaving difficult situations. We have access to a network of Traveller-friendly safehouses (which we’re looking to build upon) to get you safe if needs be.
