In 2009, Zaytuna College was founded in Berkeley, CA, with a mission that called for grounding students in the Islamic scholarly tradition as well as in the cultural currents and critical ideas shaping modern society. Today, we welcome students from across the world to both our BA and MA programs. Our BA program is in liberal arts and Islamic studies, providing students with a foundation in the intellectual heritage of two major world civilizations: the Islamic and the Western. For our MA program we offer two tracks in Islamic texts: Islamic theology and philosophy or Islamic law and legal theory. This program aims to provide students with higher-level access to the Islamic tradition through a guided course of study in Islam’s primary sources. At Zaytuna College, we have set out to do our best at restoring the broad-based, holistic tradition of what in the West was called the liberal arts and in the Muslim civilization was known as comprehensive studies. These civilizations share common aims: to think deeply and systematically about the world (creation), to ponder its ultimate source and purpose (Creator), and to live ethically in the course of our individual and collective lives (spirituality and politics). Ultimately, the purpose of education from an Islamic perspective—and for Zaytuna College—is to aid students in their own pursuit and discovery, inculcating the love of beauty, truth, and goodness in a human being.

The act of painting is a enriching and a soulful process, a non-verbal and visual means of communicating with the subconscious. Painting allows us to totally get absorbed with our inner-being, where we can withdraw from the world and connect with the unconscious. Our hidden self. Over time, my art has been a therapeutical journey for the mind and the soul. My artistic impetus has been influenced by the Northern Romantic painters, Caspar David Friedrich’s soulful sublime images and J.W.M Turner’s Thespian, dramatic semi-abstract contrasting darks hues against luminous tones that imbue emotions. Both sway between sublimity, serenity and awe-inspiring beauty. Similarly, Rothko’s ethereal canvases evoke a spirituality through mysterious broken blocks of colour and luminous layers of light that weaves in and out of the gaps, offering the viewer an experience of transcendence. My Indian heritage and Africa birthplace have influenced my painting from a deeper space within. For last twenty-five years, I have used painting as a creative and a therapeutical tool for self-analysis and higher awareness. Each of my canvases aims to offer the viewer the pleasure of the imagination, where the viewer sees more than just a recognisable forms but find themselves through the pleasure art appreciation. Not unlike both Friedrich and Turner’s art. I aim to encourage the viewer a voyeuristic perspective to exploring hidden dialogues. A pleasure of the imagination.

Hello, I'm Ruth, a yarn spinner and spinning teacher based online and in the beautiful city of Norwich. I call myself an urban spinner. Spinning in the city at first sight has many limitations, I do not have the space or resources for spinning that living in the countryside would afford. Instead I make the most of living in a city and adapt spinning processes to the urban environment. The hints and tips I have learnt from years of spinning in this way give a unique perspective to my spinning workshops. I can still buy fleece from a farmer although I have no transport of my own. I can clean fleece though I have a tiny bathroom and no outside space to dry it. Spinning is not only possible but easy in these situations and my online courses will show you how. The Slow Yarn Spinner is the culmination of a 10-year fascination with yarn. My passion for Spinning has grown from a desire to make my own knitting yarn from sustainable materials to encompass the whole process of turning fleece into yarn. From choosing fleeces, cleaning them, processing, designing yarns and spinning them I love every step of the process. In 2019, I added to my practical knowledge of spinning though my MA dissertation researching spinning as living cultural heritage in Britain today. It is this love of materials, skills and heritage that I put into my workshops.

I am also a qualified Social Worker. I have a background of over 18 years in children's social care, with over 10 years of those as a Social Worker, and manager. I've worked with 100s of people who have struggled in their lives in some way shape or form. I'm a straight-talking coach, kind and empathetic, but not here to be a friend. With over 25 years of experience in the fields of training and leadership development in both the retail and education sectors I know my stuff. My leadership career began when I worked for a bookshop chain in central London, working my way up to the role of store manager at branches in Baker Street, Earls Court and Holborn at the age of 20. This was followed by a period working as a training manager for Tesco at their first central London store on Oxford Street. My success in this role led to me being seconded to support the opening of Tesco’s flagship store in Kensington, where I helped to lead the recruitment and training of all new staff in preparation for the store’s launch. In 1999 I entered the education sector. I started as a volunteer in a pre-school, then secured a job as a Learning Support Assistant and eventually retrained as a class teacher. In my second year of teaching I took on a curriculum leadership role, which at the time was an unusual move for a new teacher. I’ve spent the last 19 years developing my career and I’m currently the headteacher of a primary school in south London. In 2014 I set up my own publishing company 9:10 Publishing. This was born out of an observation that there were very few books for young black people which were written from a black British perspective. Rather than rely on traditional publishing houses to take up my ideas, I looked into what was required to do it myself. As a result Letters to a Young Generation was born.
