Thames Explorer Trust is a charity that raises awareness of the River Thames through a range of educational activities. From our headquarters on the banks of the Thames at Chiswick, West London, we run learning programmes that get people out onto the foreshore to engage hands-on with the history, ecology and geography of the UK’s most famous river. We have over 30 years’ experience running fieldwork programmes that meet National Curriculum objectives in geography, history, science, art and citizenship in a truly memorable way. How we started The Trust was set up as an educational charity in 1988 by a group of people concerned for the future of the Thames. From small beginnings, the organisation has grown, establishing itself as an expert in Thames-related matters. Our team includes Simon Clarke the Trust Director, Heather Hyams our Trust Manager, Sam Mills our Trust Officer/Project Manager and our highly experienced freelance teachers.

Schools, and other educational groups are the mainstay of our delivery. We operate year round during term time - mainly with Fife Primary School groups, but work with most local authorities in the Central Belt, and even as far as the Lake District. We believe Ardroy is different to many other outdoor providers as we are outcome centred, not activity centred. It is not what the pupils do at Ardroy, it is what they learn from doing it.

Learning Trios take place on Wednesday and Friday – if you need to change your appointment, please call the school office to do so. We will be discussing previous targets and setting new targets. Gentle reminder that each appointment is 15 minutes. Homework (only reading this week!) Reading: Children will bring their book in their book bag and the pages to be read will be written in their green reading record. Please sign this to evidence reading has been completed. Some children will come home with a little slip of green words, these words should be learned to support their progress in reading. P.E – Wednesday with Miss Simpson and Thursday with Mrs Lynch. Lots of children still don’t have a P.E. kit, it is so important all children bring a P.E. kit for these times. The children will be a lot more comfortable for their lesson and they are learning to dress themselves independently. Maths/Numeracy: We are learning ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd etc) and making amounts up to 10p, using 1p, 2p and 5p coins. Literacy: We have finished learning all of our P1 sounds and we are now working on writing sentences independently. Topic: We have been learning about the seasons, especially Winter, and we are going to start our new topic ‘Weather’. *We would like to make a P1 Family wall display in the classroom. Working with children is both a privilege and a responsibility. We all want the young people in our care to engage with learning and thrive in our settings, but children often spend large parts of their school day learning indoors. They are also spending more of their free time in sedentary or technology-based activities. While there is nothing wrong with these activities in moderation, entire days and weeks spent away from natural environments is known to be detrimental. Children’s brains are hard-wired to connect with the natural world and unless they are exposed to such environments on a regular basis, they risk being denied essential opportunities for optimal neurological development.
