September 2022 – Volunteering update: Following the lifting of all Covid rules and restrictions by the Scottish Government, TCV Scotland’s volunteer groups, Green Gyms and other outdoor activities are now running as ‘normal’ ie as they did pre-pandemic. However, we will continue to provide face masks and hand sanitiser to any participant who wishes them. Most of our training courses and learning events are also back to being held ‘in-person’, although the pandemic has shown that there are advantages to learning online, so we shall continue to host some events virtually – see our Eventbrite page for details of upcoming events. The opportunity to get outside and make a difference TCV Scotland offers a wide range of environmental activities for people from different backgrounds, ages and abilities to help protect and enhance our local greenspaces and biodiversity. At the same time participants learn new skills, improve their physical and mental health, and engage with like-minded people. We are also committed to providing a diverse range of high-quality learning opportunities for a wide range of participants, we support local communities, and can help you discover your ‘inner scientist’ and that hidden passion for nature.

Glasbury House Outdoor Education Centre, now known as The River Wye Activity Centre, is a substantial former aristocratic residence. Grade II listed with parts of which are believed to date back to the 1750’s which has been much adapted and altered over many years. This includes substantial reconfiguration in Victorian Times and modern extensions in the past 50 years. For the last 5 decades, Glasbury House Outdoor Education Centre has welcomed thousands of children and youth. Outdoor education has always been at the heart of the philosophy at Glasbury, and the River Wye Activity Centre is no different. We look forward to continuing to uphold it’s tradition by providing: Canoe hire Archery Team building Bushcraft Climbing and abseiling Gorge walking Mountain biking and much more. At the River Wye Activity Centre, we have a team of staff passionate about outdoor education and outdoor activities. We specialise in residential school or college trips, but can also put on corporate events, courses and training days. As well as the main house, we also have a bunkhouse on site which can sleep a further 27 guests.

Kathy King is a Science and Psychology specialist who has worked with a variety of vulnerable groups including young people with special educational needs, including social, emotional and behavioural problems, and the homeless. She is passionate about showing others the power of being active in nature and using outdoor activities as a tool to improve wellbeing. Her research has proven that participation in a 6-week Forest School programme can increase attendance and reduce exclusion rates from mainstream school. Applying the fundamentals of the holistic Forest School approach in all that she does, Kathy believes this can create positive changes in behaviour. Kathy made a life-changing decision to leave teaching and enrol on an outdoor instructor programme after experiencing high levels of work-related stress and anxiety. The 2-day a week course provided an opportunity to master new skills and focus on what she considered to be most important in life. It was on the water that the idea for the Wild Camp Training Programme was born. This is a project aimed at young women who are currently out of education, employment and/or training (N.E.E.T) and is designed to empower and increase physical and mental health. Since then, the charity has evolved to deliver after school clubs, forest school sessions, holiday clubs, 1-1 outdoor activity sessions and group days out.

Located in the centre of the Fieldway Community (New Addington, Croydon), our full time Day Care Nursery at Wayside offers a fun and friendly environment for children to enjoy and learn in from the age of 18 months. Busy Bees Pre-School Nursery, South Croydon is located at the back of Brighton Road Baptist Church. Our friendly and professional team are ready to give you a warm welcome as you and your child begin their Early Years learning journey, where your child’s wellbeing and development is at the heart of everything we do. Starting with a freshly cut log you will make your own chair and, at the end of the course, take it home with you. Hopefully it will be a friend for life and something to bequeath to future generations! If you are looking for a digital de-tox, a few days in the woods and learning something new, this course might be for you. By following a few commonsense rules, anyone can work with greenwood tools safely and proficiently. If you like working with your hands you can discover for yourself the joy of making something useful and beautiful from green wood. No previously learned skills are required. However some may find the course physically taxing. The working day is long, from 9.00 am till 6.00 pm each day. img_0087.jpg The course instructor is Peter Young. Peter recently retired from directing a study retreat centre in the Scottish Borders. He is passionate about green woodworking and has learned yurt-making from the legendary Hal Wynne-Jones and chairmaking from the equally legendary Mike Abbott. Mike has done more than anyone else in the UK to rescue green woodworking from oblivion, and is supportive of these courses. Peter feels deeply that this traditional type of work has wisdom in it, respecting both the materials and ourselves. 'We can learn a lot from it,' he says. 'We work with Nature, not against it. We use only local, sustainably grown timber, often from coppiced woodland. Every bit is used and nothing wasted. But more than this, we try to see what the particular log is doing, how the grain is flowing and from this we learn what part it wants to play in the whole chair.' Where are the courses? The course venue is Broughtonknowe, a privately owned wood, 25 miles south of Edinburgh on the A701. By car, it is within easy reach for commuting daily from Edinburgh (45mins) and 75 minutes from Carlisle. The course takes place in a quarry within the woodland. The quarry has greened up over the past hundred years, creating a beautiful sheltered setting for outdoor activities.
