I was working with someone recently who held a very senior position in an organisation and he hadn’t been in a good place. He was terrified of an upcoming key note he had to deliver. At the end of our session he said: “I can’t believe it Jo but I’m really looking forward to it now. I’ve got the tools I need”. That is why I do what I do. We were backstage and you could hear this buzz of expectation from the audience outside. I’d used all the security resources available to put it on and here I was with my actors saying they wouldn’t go through with it” Jo Darby set up Voice in the Room in 2016 but the seeds for the business were planted many years before. As a teenager with a love of acting she attended the National Youth Theatre. “I saw how directors were trying to help us to get the message of the play across and make a connection with the audience. That’s what they facilitated and that was the bit I found really interesting. How do you support people in a really positive way to achieve that? That was the point when I decided I didn’t want to do acting, I wanted to direct. When I later had the opportunity to do that at University, I grabbed it with both hands. Directing was a hobby that became a job.” As a Theatre Director Jo began creating productions in the North East at Northern Stage and the Live Theatre. She went onto launch her own theatre company and travel overseas to direct for the Australian Theatre for Young People before later working at Pilot Theatre Company and Bristol Old Vic. One early experience creating a brand new play with inmates at Northallerton Young Offenders Institute was particularly influential. “I was left on my own with the group to get on with rehearsals when one day things all kicked off, a fight broke out, there were chairs flying, the lot. I never felt threatened. I knew it wasn’t aimed at me and I was able to reassure staff such that we were allowed to continue. I persuaded the governor we should put on the play in front of the whole prison – in the prison chapel. Looking back now this seems unbelievable but it’s true! Just before the play was due to start my group refused to go on. We were backstage and you could hear this buzz of expectation from the audience outside. I’d used all the security resources available to put it on and here I was with my actors saying they wouldn’t go through with it. So I had to give them a big pep talk about how this was their opportunity to be heard and express themselves, remind them that they felt no one ever listened to them and this was their big chance. Eventually, they went out and did it. Everyone cheered and it all turned out fine. I still think now, goodness know’s what would have happened if it hadn’t gone ahead!

Having run my own lorry for Hire & Reward including continental for a while I have been where you are going to be…. In the real world. I've run my own lorry based buisness for a number of years and moved into Driver Training in 1985 when two people who worked for me needed a C+E licence (HGV class 1) and just could not find a t...raining provider who offered the right training at a realistic price. I trained up both of them successfully and the rest as they say is history. In 1985 I attended the RTITB (The only recognised body to Road Transport) and also did the re registration courses as and when they were due. Since then the DSA have started their voluntary registration which I joined when launched. In January 2008 I re-sat & again passed the LGV Instructors course for the third time running including the new Theory Test and the Hazard Perception. So I know from personal experience what you will be expected to do. I'm one of only a handful of instructors in the area who are fully qualified. Not many people realise that, unlike Car instructors, HGV trainers do not have to be qualified to teach you. In over 20 years of training I have built up a firm customer base with many companies having been with me since 1985. There are two agencies who take newly qualified lorry drivers from me on a regular basis. I believe that during training it is important to be on the road as much as possible. I don’t have any Classrooms or spend time in Cafés or parked in Lay-By’s. All my training is in the Cab, the majority of the time with the wheels moving and you at the controls. After all that’s what you are paying for!

With over two decades of hands on experience in construction and construction training; together they established Prestige Tool Hire Company in 2001 which catered for the construction industry. Having realised the potential of the construction industry they formed Total Training. Total Training started as a division of Prestige Hire to deliver accredited training for the construction industry in 2010 and received accreditation from various awarding bodies in the fields of construction and logistics. Initially, Total Training concentrated solely on commercial training. As of 2013, they started working with colleges and other training providers. VG Training was created and is led by Director, Vicki Gwynne, who lives locally with her partner (Nick) daughter (Jess) and their slightly unsociable rabbit (Speedy). She has worked across Stoke on Trent in a variety of roles over the years, has a vocational background in education, psychology, support for adults and young people with multiple needs, and is a qualified teacher and trainer. Vicki is passionate about Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire – the area, the people, and the skills and experience within it. VG Training was created after she realised how many local companies paid for out of area ‘experts’ and ‘specialists’ to train their staff and provide advice… paying high travel and accommodation costs, big city prices, and having to explain local history and requirements as the ‘experts’ didn’t understand the local dynamics. Vicki knew colleagues and other local trainers who had similar qualifications and experience and the ability to deliver good quality learning or advice, so built up a fantastic, local team of specialist trainers and consultants to deliver a variety of training courses, learning experiences and consultations at affordable prices! Vicki is proud of the quality of training delivered through the company, “All trainers have dual specialism – experts in the subject matter (either through qualifications or experience) and have a training or teaching qualification which helps to plan learning objectives, create appropriate resources and keep learning active.
