Founded in 1989, we are a single organisation with seventeen Chapters across England and Wales. Our Chapters are led by local people acting together for the common good through the method of Community Organising. The UK has a rich history of people organising for power and change such as the Levellers, the Abolitionists, the Chartists, early trade unionists like the match girls and dock strikers, and the Suffragettes. Our work at Citizens UK is influenced by a heritage which draws on the broad-based organising of our sister organisation, the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) and before that the US civil rights movement. Over the last thirty years we have won £1.8bn in additional wages for low paid workers, ended child detention for immigration purposes, secured an amnesty of ‘legacy cases’ for 160,000 asylum applicants as well as winning many victories at the local and regional level. We build power with people so that together we can move from the world as it is toward the world as it should be. Some of our campaigns have spun off into dedicated projects, to create long-term change. The largest and most successful of these teams is the Living Wage Foundation which now accredits a network of over 9,000 employers who pay 300,000 employees the real Living Wage. Others include Parents and Communities Together (PACT) and Sponsor Refugees. We are proud of other social innovations that have successfully spun out to become independent organisations such as Safe Passage, London Community Land Trust and Money Mentors.

Urbed (Urbanism, Environment and Design) Ltd to close-Urbed Trust unaffected It is with great sadness that we announce that our partner organisation Urbed (Urbanism, Environment and Design) Ltd will close early in 2023. The employee-owned cooperative finds itself with no option, following the completion of several projects and operating in an incredibly difficult post COVID environment, particularly with public sector tendering. Urbed (Urbanism, Environment and Design) Ltd formed in 2006, and grew out of the original Urbed (Urban and Economic Development) Ltd from 1976. It is one of the last surviving members of a group of consultancies that pioneered the process of urban regeneration in the 1970s and 80s. Since that time Urbed have undertaken ground-breaking work on the reuse of industrial heritage, managed workspace, town centres, sustainable urbanism, domestic retrofit, urban design and coding. Their closure will not affect ourselves at the Urbed Trust. We are a separate not for profit company run by Urbed’s 1976 original founding director Dr Nicholas Falk. We will continue our work on smarter urbanisation and sustainable housing in both the UK and India. Who are the URBED Trust? The URBED Trust is a not for profit company with charitable aims set up to promote research into the future of urban areas, and to disseminate best practice. The trust was reconstituted after Nicholas Falk and David Rudlin won the 2014 Wolfson Economics Prize for showing how to build new Garden Cities that are visionary, viable and popular. A group of expert board members are overseeing different projects, in partnership with other public bodies.

Bethlem Gallery is a visual arts organisation in south-east London. We programme creative activities, projects and commissions to participate in, look at, talk and think about. Based at Bethlem Royal Hospital, Beckenham, and working across South London and the UK, we support the professional development and socially engaged practice of our artists, many of whom have experienced mental health services. We bridge communities, aiming to make art an everyday practice and mental health an everyday conversation. Our programme includes collaborations with other cultural and health organisations including Bethlem Museum of the Mind, with whom we share a building, artists-in-residence, and interdisciplinary research. We engage audiences in learning and debate on the subject of mental health and artistic practice. We are a charity founded in 1997. My name is Anthony, I'm currently working remotely and I have been passionate about travel all my life. New places and new people have inspired me throughout this journey. I was fortunate to be engaged in a lot of projects that are creative. Everything went well, but then 2020 began! Soon after the pandemic started, I suddenly discovered that it became almost impossible to travel. I was working in one particular place, surrounded by walls, and day to day nothing changed. My motivation was disappearing… Spring was gone, then summer... Borders gradually opened, but few people risked travelling. For me, everything changed in the autumn when I met Lena.. Lena was in the same situation, she wanted to travel, but she didn't want to go alone. Together we found a way out. We have created a first camp by gathering like-minded people such as entrepreneurs, startupers, IT-specialists, and together we went to Turkey, rented a villa and spent two weeks there. Even though we arrived as strangers we quickly developed a bond. We spontaneously organized workshops, brainstorming sessions, and most importantly the exchange of experiences and friendships. The community started to appear. more than 30 countries Lena Bulgakova Traveler and co-founder of the project #remotecamp Now, after a series of successful camps in different countries, we know it works!. People from different fields of activity, united by the desire to know themselves better, found their work & life balance here. They found themselves happier and more productive, and continued to inspire each other. We discovered how people found a new lifestyle, explored wonderful places alongside their work.

It is always good to understand certain aspects of country’s culture and customs before going there. You will avoid being surprized or embarassed in that way. Here are the most interesting Polish customs which is good to be familiar with: Curious people Polish people are very curious towards international visitors. They are very much interested in different cultures, however if you only look back – nothing has happened 😉 Shaking hands It is very Polish to shake hands when you introduce yourself. YOu do it always with your right, bare hand. It is considered impolite if you do it in a glove. Keeping an eye contact When speaking to someone, keep an eye contact for most of the time. It is not necessary to keep it all the time. If you do not, you might not get what you want. Personal questions It is quite common in Poland to be asked questions which are often considered as private. As Poles are curious people, they like to get into little details, so do not forget to be assertive. Meal schedule Food in Poland is often fat and served with meat. Soups are very popular and offer a great variety of types & tastes. Typically in Poland people eat 3 times a day. Bruderszaft It is a fraternal toast, after which Polish people start to address each other with first names, and declining it can be seen as an insult. Relationships become more cordial after this little ceremony. Bruderszaft is two people raising toasts simultaneously with arms interlocked and drinking. The last part is an exchange of kisses and a handshake.

We are a volunteer led work with very few staff, but this does not mean we are a small organization. We can see as many as 300 people a day, looking for our assistance. We remain open every day Our impact remains high We can do this for a fraction of the cost of other day centres. We do this without any statutory funding. We recognize the true strength of our volunteers. And we recognize the value of everybody coming through our doors. First, we help people by meeting immediate needs: food, shelter, clothing, and medical care. In our recovery programs, we address deeper needs for life-skills and job-skills training, and addiction recovery. We measure our progress against four criteria, which indicate to us that a life has been transformed from homelessness to hope: connection to family, commitment to sobriety, a job and a place to live, and a plan for the future. Today, The Whitechapel Mission is a results-oriented organization that is recognized as one of London's most effective. Our Purpose The Whitechapel Mission is called to serve the men and women caught in the cycles of poverty, hopelessness and dependencies of many kinds, and to see their lives transformed to hope, joy and lasting productivity. Sands exists to reduce the number of babies dying and to support anyone affected by the death of a baby, before, during or shortly after birth, whenever this happened and for as long as they need support. Babies are dying every day. Currently in the UK, 13 families a day suffer the heartbreak of losing their baby before, during or shortly after birth. That’s around 4,500 babies a year. And an estimated 1 in 4 pregnancies ends in miscarriage. These numbers are shocking and show the scale of the problem. Currently, far too many babies die without scientists, doctors, midwives, or their own parents understanding why. That’s why we believe research is vital in improving our understanding of how to save babies’ lives and using that evidence to drive changes in maternity policy and practice. For more than 40 years, Sands has been here for anyone affected by pregnancy and baby loss to offer understanding and comfort through its Freephone helpline, mobile app, online community and resources, and locally through a UK-wide network of around 100 regional support groups. Sands works in partnership with health care professionals, trusts and health boards and offers a range of training programmes and bereavement care resources to ensure that every bereaved parent and family receives the best possible care wherever they are in the UK. Sands supports and promotes research to better understand the causes of baby deaths, improve maternity safety and save babies’ lives. The charity also raises awareness of baby loss and works with governments, key influencers and other stakeholders to make reducing the number of babies dying a priority nationally and locally.
