British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association

british hang gliding and paragliding association

Meridian Business Park

Welcome to the British Hang Gliding & Paragliding Association (BHPA) website. From its head office in Leicester the BHPA supports a country-wide network of recreational clubs and registered schools, and provides the infrastructure within which hang gliding and paragliding in the United Kingdom (UK) thrive. Hang Glider (Courtesy Mike Scholes) The BHPA oversees pilot and instructor training standards, and provides technical support such as airworthiness standards, and coaching courses for qualified hang gliding and paragliding pilots. Initial hang gliding or paragliding training must be undertaken at a BHPA registered school. Most schools offer training in a wide range of flying disciplines, so it's important to understand the differences between the disciplines before choosing a school. The Learn to Fly section of this web site explains the relative merits of each discipline, the types of flying involved, and provides an insight into the training methods used. As you near the end of your initial training with one of our registered schools, it's important to start looking for suitable recreational club to join. Obtaining your Club Pilot rating marks the end of your formal instruction and qualifies you to leave the school and fly within a BHPA recreational club. The BHPA supports a network of UK hang gliding and paragliding recreational clubs who are able to offer the supportive flying and social environment vital to the safe development of your flying skills, as you join other recreational flyers on the hill, and continue your progression through the BHPA Pilot Rating Scheme (PRS). As your accumulated airtime increases and your flying skills improve, you will probably start to think about your long term goals and aspirations, and working towards your Pilot Rating, the next rung on the PRS ladder. Club coaches can offer advice and support with the flying tasks that need to be completed, and the theory exam you will need to sit. An online BHPA Mock Pilot Rating Exam is also available. This will allow you to test your current knowledge and help you to understand the subject areas you will need to revise before sitting the real exam. When you first leave your school and join a club, you may choose to spend your first few hours' flying with no specific aim other than to safely accumulate airtime. However, it is well known that pilots make safer more efficient progress when they are given particular tasks to undertake. With that in mind, a panel of experienced BHPA coaches have devised a new pathway to learning, the BHPA Pilot Development Structure. This offers an alternative to the more formal Pilot Rating System, and for newly qualified pilots aims to: encourage interaction between new pilots, their club and its coaches provide a structured way to progress, acquire knowledge and build skills through attainable goals reduce flying related incidents and promote safe flying Paraglider (Courtesy Derek Frith) The BHPA also has a disability initiative called Flyability. This reports directly to the BHPA's Executive Council on disability related matters within the sport. Flyability doesn't simply take people with disabilities flying, it strives to motivate people with disabilities to become involved in the sport of hang gliding and paragliding and to train as pilots. Much of Flyability's work in the sport, focuses around changing peoples perception of disability and their attitudes toward people with disabilities. Disability awareness, education and advice play key roles in Flyability's aims and objectives, as does the development of specialist equipment, training and flying techniques. The BHPA also publishes Skywings, the only magazine dedicated to free flying in the United Kingdom. This glossy full colour magazine is distributed by mail to around 6,500 BHPA members each month as part of their membership package. Powered hang glider (Courtesy Ian Ferguson) Skywings magazine is also read by countless more hang gliding and paragliding pilots and organisations around the world who have purchased an International Skywings magazine subscription from our on-line shop. Freely available electronic copies of Skywings magazine are also published each month on our Skywings page. These can be viewed online as a flipbook magazine, or downloaded as a pdf document. When viewing the magazine online on a device with a small screen, we recommend that you select the single page option in the menu at the top of each issue.

Define Fine

Market Harborough

Define Fine has been created by a small but committed team of parents and professionals who have lived experience of school attendance difficulties. As DEFINE FINE: Parent Peer Support for School Attendance Difficulties we support our members who are struggling with school attendance difficulties and parent carers from our wider SEND and mental health networks. We provide peer support using our tried and tested resources and to help parents advocate for the support their children and young people need to be able to learn and achieve. We hope to build up our growing network of peer supporters, who we can train to use our guides for their own family and ultimately to then help other families experiencing attendance difficulties. Our resources and training are also available for professionals in Education, Health and Social Care. Empowering parents to be able to effectively work with professionals, should encourage not only earlier intervention, with much better outcomes, but also reduce the risk and impact of unhelpful, and unnecessary attendance prosecutions and social services interventions. It is vital that children, young people and their families receive appropriate support, and especially in cases where professionals insist children are “fine in school, “ all are clear as to how fine is actually defined. For us “fine in school” would mean that children are safe, healthy, happy and their needs are acknowledged and supported to be able to access suitable education and learn.

London

As a young NQT eager to get into the classroom, I was so fortunate to land my first teaching role at a re-known South Leicestershire Primary School. My teaching style: Focus on what they 'can do' build self-esteem & resilience & deepen understanding. With this positive approach to children's learning I noticed that before long, their confidence to tackle the tasks they couldn't do grew, often with exceptional results. Although my heart always remained in the classroom, it wasn't long before I started moving into more Senior roles as I was keen to impact on whole school development. Passionate about getting the right learning to children when they are younger, I went on to become Head of Key Stage 1 & Literacy with a special interest in how phonics was taught. When you first qualify to become a teacher, interests you may have had then, often change. Always the creative at heart I often took learning away from the desk & into the hall as children re-enacted key periods in history/literacy texts through dance/drama/music. Not only did we cover the curriculum, but it also gave children who may have struggled in the classroom, the opportunity to shine through the arts. Recognising & nurturing children's talents in this way was so rewarding & boosted their confidence back in the classroom too. I went onto become Advanced skills teacher of performing arts. As well as working with my incredibly talented Deputy Head/Head of Music to develop our reputation in this area, I was also seconded to work in other schools in the county to develop that part of the curriculum for them too. I then diversified & became Head of Behaviour Management & Pupil Well-Being. I attending various seminars run by the incredibly inspirational Dr Bill Rogers (Behaviour Management Specialist who sketched his way through seminars rather than power-points!) His simple yet effective strategies changed the way we managed behaviour back in the classroom. As we know, children mis-behave for a reason. If we can get to the root of it, we can work together to find ways to de-escalate a situation before a child ultimately goes into crisis. Unsurprisingly, I developed an interest & connection with Team Teach, award-winning 'positive handling' training which helps staff support pupils with challenging behaviour.

Harrison's Hope

harrison's hope

Leicester

Our executive team has over 120 years of healthcare experience and works with our leadership teams and board of directors to support our caregivers.Harrison’s Hope knows that hospice care is equally about managing symptoms and addressing concerns of the patient and supporting and educating families and loved ones. A longtime employee Kristi Hartway shared, “We have always been very focused on the families.” Our Testimonials and Blog highlight a number of ways in which we have worked with patients and families to make final wishes come true. Many employees of the company have been touched by hospice themselves and truly understand the hospice benefit. These employees have seen firsthand the value, special care and services that are provided in the final months of life. Veteran care has also been a priority for Harrison’s Hope since the very beginning. In fact, the agency was one of the first hospices in the area to launch a “We Honor Veterans Program.” Veterans continue to be an important population for Harrison’s Hope and employees recognize Veterans each month through pinning ceremonies. specialized plans of care, assistance with Veteran benefits, a Veteran to Veteran volunteer program and much more. It is your choice to decide when the time for hospice is right for you. To the extent possible, hospice emphasizes quality of life and tries to give back to patients their own independence and control. Individuals who elect hospice care find that every effort is made to keep them comfortable; allowing them to spend their final months with their loved ones in the place that they call home. Ideally patients are referred to hospice when their life expectancy is approximately six months. Choosing hospice earlier allows the patient and their loved ones to make the most of their end-of-life journey. The hospice team is always there to guide them through the process and provide support – neither prolonging life nor hastening death. Please fill out our contact us form or call us at 208-286-1300 to learn more about how Harrison’s Hope can help you and/or your loved ones, today. We have hospice offices in the Boise and Twin Falls area and serve many surrounding counties. We also have sister agencies in four other regions that operate as Serenity Hospice, Hospice of Virginia, Hospice Partners, and Alamo Hospice.

Step It Up Active

Rugby,

I was convinced that I couldn't run, not even for a bus! However, I was persuaded to join a beginners running group and it turns out that I can. If I can, then anyone can! I particularly like trail running but spend as much time training on the roads. As part of the Rugby Core Team you can find me at parkrun most Saturdays as anything from Run Director to Tail Walker! UKA Coach in Running Fitness (Trail) UKA Leader in Running Fitness (LiRF) UKA Coaching Assistant BSc (Hons) Health Studies L3 Learning and Development L3 Forest School Leader Outdoor First Aid D B S Enhanced Certificated I began running about 4 years ago in a local running group and made the same ‘rookie’ mistakes that most people do, in that I wanted to sprint before I’d learned to run. However, I took onboard my errors and built up gradually, finishing some 5km and 10km runs in 2016/7, vowing never to want to reach a Half Marathon or beyond. Hmmm! Having had a nasty sprain injury in 2017, I had to take a back seat from running for over a year (much of which was down to my own reluctance to get help! Thank you Laura @ LMC Physio), but I’ve now regained most of my previous running fitness level and have since completed a couple of Half Marathons with at least one more long race booked in for 2019. I regularly volunteer at Rugby parkrun, invariably with a camera in my hands, which I thoroughly enjoy. Having this qualification will mean I can pass on my enthusiasm for running to others and start them on their own running journeys. UKA Leader in Running Fitness (LiRF) D B S Enhanced Certificated First Aid Course trained Vicky is a recent member of our coaching and leadership team. As a fully-qualified paramedic and avid Wolf Runner, she is a great addition to the group, assisting us with the new sector of trail running for Step It Up. Vicky is more than happy at events up to and including 10km UKA Leader in Running Fitness (LiRF) D B S Enhanced Certificated Paramedic Mel is our latest member of our coaching and leadership team. UKA Leader in Running Fitness (LiRF) D B S Enhanced Certificated It’s simple, I’m addicted to running, I certainly didn’t start out this way, in fact I used to say I didn’t have the build for running and actively avoided it. When my local gym had to close the pool to repair the roof, I needed to find another way to get my exercise in the morning, at the same time I convinced a friend to come and give park run a go with me. After that first run walk 5k, I was hooked. I got out a few times each week, doing 30 mins of run walk & soon developed the stamina for a full 5k I joined SIU because I saw that they did Adventure Runs which sounded like great fun and after my first session, I knew this was a club I’d enjoy being part of. At SIU everyone is encouraged to do their individual best but we stay together as a group, supporting one and other, no one is ever left behind, or made/allowed to feel that their best isn’t good enough. Hope you’ll join us on the trails soon, after all, what’s stopping you.

All you need to do to take part in Pilates are some comfortable clothes, and if taking part in online classes, a space to lie down and access to a laptop, PC, iPad, tablet or mobile phone. A mat is optional, although most people tend to have their own. If not you are welcome to borrow one of mine. A Pilates head cushion can be useful, or a folded towel will do the same job if you do not have one. Online classes take place via the online meeting platform ZOOM which is ever so easy to set up. If you are not so sure, you can always contact me to help you and you can also take a look at my ZOOM Hints and Tips article in my blog area. What do I need to remember? You should always listen to your own body and work at a level that is right for you, especially when participating in online classes. I aways say that nothing I say is ever compulsory; if you feel like you need to take a rest that is absolutely what you must do. If at any point during your class you begin to feel faint, dizzy or have physical discomfort, you should stop immediately and seek medical advice. Please follow instructions careful and apply your judgement regarding the suitability of any exercises, choosing the level and any progressions that are appropriate for you, and resting when you need to do so. By participating in Pilates classes, you are doing so at your own risk. Jane Fletcher Pilates is not responsible or liable for any injury or harm you may sustain as a result of taking part.
