Every year, thousands of people in the UK face court alone. Without help, they have to represent themselves while they go through a divorce, seek custody of their children, defend or put forward a personal injury claim or face eviction from their home. They are forced to navigate a complex legal system alone, often against the professional legal representation of the other party. The increase in cuts to legal aid over recent years has meant that thousands more people face the civil or family courts alone. Their access to justice is limited by how overwhelming the legal system can be to those who have never faced it before, and many struggle to represent themselves effectively in court. We offer support and guidance before, during, and after court. We ensure that those facing court alone feel prepared and supported in accessing justice. Over the next five years we've got big plans to help even more people facing court without representation. We’ll use technology to connect with more people, in more places, more cost effectively. We'll invest in recruiting and training more volunteers to empower people dealing with the stressful navigation of the court process. And we’ll continue to ensure that clients are at the heart of all we do, so they know they’re not alone.

Before living in Uttar Pradesh (UP), India, I hadn’t thought much about menstruation. I was the last one in my class to get my period and when I did, my dad bought me flowers and my mother wanted to throw me a period party. With such a body-positive family, I felt like periods were, if anything, too much in the limelight. While working for a local non-governmental organization (NGO) in UP, I surveyed hundreds of girls in rural villages to ask what they needed. What I heard over and over again was: We need information about how our bodies work, why we change during puberty, and how to care for ourselves. So I began sitting in on menstrual hygiene trainings, studying best practices from other local NGOs, and learning how to conduct my own. The overwhelming majority of women and girls with whom we spoke used mattress stuffing or dirty rags as pads and hadn’t learned about menstruation until they’d already begun bleeding. I couldn’t stop imagining how terrifying it would be to suddenly begin bleeding profusely from my genitals without understanding why it’s happening. Story after story solidified my devotion to assist these girls in knowing and loving their bodies. One girl recounted how her friend died of an infection. As a sanitary napkin, the friend used a dirty rag that had cleaned a bicycle. She was then too ashamed of her vaginal discomfort to seek medical help. I began realizing what those in this field already know: this issue requires widespread attention. And this issue requires much more than briefly supplying girls with information and sanitary napkins. If girls internalize they are inherently impure, then they’re set up for a life of devaluing their bodies. The social norms and mindsets of shame surrounding vaginas and periods have fatal and traumatic psychological consequences. I created Spreading Your Wings to help address these obstacles. No other Hindi or English comic book exists that speaks to the rural specific logistical and social challenges these girls face. The book incorporates metaphors, games, and explanations that my team and I have seen resonate with girls in our trainings. We strive to not just equip girls with accurate and relatable information, but to help them reframe the very way that they see their bodies, to transform the shame they feel into pride. Since we opened in 2011 Hammersmith Academy has been striving to do something different. In my experience of working in inner-city education, and my own time at school, I sometimes saw an attitude that assumed some people ‘can’t do’, and I knew this was wrong. If you show your students you have belief in them and encourage them to have belief in themselves, their confidence grows and they surprise themselves with what they can achieve. In the United Kingdom various providers have always been able to run their own schools, whether via the maintained or independent sector. This has enabled many faith and other groups to establish and run schools which appeal to different cohorts throughout the country. In England, all schools registered with the Department for Education need to comply with regulations and guidelines which are based on legislation and current educational thinking. Schools are inspected and regulated by Ofsted – a non-ministerial department of the UK Government. Since the 2010 Equalities Act, and more recently the Children and Social Work Act 2018, the Department for Education has revised their regulations and guidelines in such a way that challenges foundational religious beliefs and traditional family values. It is very clear that Ofsted and the Department for Education are focused on promoting an agenda whereby “all protected characteristics are equal, but some characteristics are more equal than others”. Simultaneously there has been a calculated and concerted effort by secular humanist organisations to not only investigate and undermine practices in faith schools, but to attack the bedrocks of convention and belief that are the cornerstones of schools who promote faith and traditional family structures. The current challenges in education threaten human rights including the freedom of parents to choose the education they wish for their child.
