Leeds Animation Workshop is a not-for-profit, cooperative company, run by women, which produces and distributes animated films and films on social and educational issues. The organisation began in 1976 as a group of women friends who came together to make a film about the need for pre-school childcare. After completing WHO NEEDS NURSERIES? - WE DO! the group was formally established in 1978 as Leeds Animation Workshop. Throughout its history the Workshop has been run by women, who have carried out all stages of the production process, from initial research to final distribution. The films are all produced in consultation with organisations and individuals involved in the relevant field. The Workshop specialises in making complex or sensitive issues more accessible to audiences, and at times offering an alternative point of view. As well as production and distribution, the Workshop has been involved in many other activities, such as organising screenings of films by women and black directors, and providing workshop sessions in basic animation for adults and young people.

Since I was a child I have always had a passion for helping people, I would help the kids in the street and elderly people where I lived and then when I grew up and married I studied and practised Reiki on people with the hope and prayer that the Universe would work its unimaginable power through me for the good of all. I studied reiki in India as well as in the U.K. over twenty years ago. Fast forward to present day and I’m now in a profession that does exactly what I have always hoped for. I have been blessed with the opportunity to pass on the healing and my life experience in helping others, to overcome their problems and issues and find the work-life balance that we have been searching for years. My Reiki and healing centre is based in Saks within the David Lloyd leisure centre in Moortown, Leeds. CareerDays.co.uk was founded by former teachers who often came across students unsure of which career to go into. Career advice plays a big part in a students school life but we found many students often had no idea what career they wanted and were ill equipped to make that decision without experiencing each one beforehand. Many of our students would, for example, decide at 17 that they were interested in medicine but had no idea of the intricacies involved in applying or even if their skillset matched a job in the field. Similarly we've had students from an early age determined to go into a career without having gained any work experience of it to ascertain if it actually might be for them. We started in 2014 by running medicine work experience days and since then we've grown to incorporate several other careers that students would benefit from gaining work experience in and learning about, to help make their decisions easier when it comes to choosing a potential career. We have set about forging relationships with key industry figures and today have an extensive network of professionals that we can call upon to help run our courses and offer the best advice and advantage to our students. We formed CareerDays.co.uk to offer students the chance to experience a career that may be of interest and give them an honest insight into the field so they can decide to commit to it or to look into alternate careers. Either way offering some valuable information to them in order to help them make the right career choices.

Baby Week is a registered charity and aims to bring sectors and services together to promote the best start in life. The initiative was inspired by Brazil’s ‘Semana do Bebe’ (UNICEF 2010), following a visit to the country by Churchill Fellow Lucy Potter. Leeds hosted the first English speaking Baby Week in 2016 and since has had interest from several other towns and cities wanting to host their own celebrations. Since Baby Week became a registered charity, Bradford, Hull, Wakefield, Cheshire and Merseyside have organised their very own take on Baby Week Leeds. In 2019, we were nominated and came in second place as charity of the year by The British Journal of Midwifery Practice Awards (BJM). Over the past six years, hundreds of citywide events have been held with thousands of attendees including parents, expectant parents, practitioners and professionals , and of course babies! Each city hosting the week has the opportunity to celebrate and bring together the work of maternity and early years services, helping to raise awareness of the critical developmental growth stages and a real focus on the 1001 days in order to give every baby the best start in life. Baby Week is organised with Child Friendly Leeds with partnerships involving NHS Leeds, Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Leeds Dads, Public Health, Mumbler, and many more partners across all sectors. To mark the 5 years in 2020, Baby Week Leeds focussed on five of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a focus over the next few years: Good Health and Wellbeing, Reduced Inequality, Sustainable cities and communities, Climate action and No Poverty.
