APSE - Association for Public Service Excellance

apse - association for public service excellance

Manchester

The Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) is a networking community that assists local authorities who are striving to improve their frontline services. APSE works with more than 250 local authorities across the UK to advise and share information and expertise on a broad range of frontline public services. These councils are supported by a team of experts, who draw upon a wealth of knowledge in areas such as policy and practice, as well as in vital frontline service areas. Members of APSE have access to many excellent benefits that help local authorities to grow. These include regular briefings on the latest policy developments and operational issues, access to groups and forums that allow authorities to come together to share information and collaborate, and the ability to anonymously ask for - and give - advice on a range of service issues. One of the most important benefits APSE membership offers is the opportunity for local authority service providers to have their views voiced and represented at a national level. APSE carefully develops this voice by collaborating with members, and supports it using research, extensive campaigns and consistent media activities. APSE conducts research, publishes reports, and campaigns to create a positive role for local government, helping them to deliver high quality, effective and efficient public services. APSE's targeted training programme, regular briefings and inclusive events strive to keep council officers and elected members constantly updated on the latest public service issues. There is also APSE Solutions, an in-house team that works closely with individual authorities, offering high quality consultancy and interim management support for members and other relevant organisations. APSE has also developed the innovative Performance Networks service, which is the largest national voluntary local government benchmarking service. APSE is here to help local authorities and endeavours to do everything possible to help them achieve excellence in their frontline service

Our father Tom Johnson started Awards Ltd. in 1977 in the dining room of his house in Urbana IL where he produced engraved products such as plaques, signs and awards. In 1982 he moved Awards Ltd. to Champaign, IL, where he set up shop in the loft of his new home, adding promotional items to his line of products. In 1989 Tom acquired a similar business called Signmaster which made signs, name tags, and rubber stamps. He merged Awards Ltd with Signmaster operation and moved the business to Henson Place in Champaign, where Awards Ltd. is still located today. He then decided to bring on his two sons Glenn and Kenny to help with the additional production efforts needed to produce these new products. Glenn and Kenny took over most of the production side of the business, and although Tom still kept his hands busy with some production work, he focused primarily on promotional products and the business side of things. In 1996 Glenn and Kenny took over managemnt of the business, overseeing all aspects of production, bookkeeping and marketing. In 2000 Tom decided to retire paving the way for Glenn and Kenny to take over ownership of the business. Tom still came to work every day, helping with production, but the thing he liked doing the most was working on the computer setting up artwork for promotional products and other production items. Tom has since retired completely, but he still stops by every day to say hi. He will be 86 years young on May 29, 2017. Currently it is just the two of us (Glenn and Kenny) and our loyal co-worker Sarah who is a very hard worker and in the process of learning all aspects of our business. Sarah has been with us for a little over a 3 years now. We are still going strong after 40 years in business! Awards Ltd, where ideas are unlimited!

Growing up I was incredibly blessed by the magic my parents created for my sisters and I at Christmas. It started a few weeks before the big day with the tree. We had a classic late 80’s white tree. Each year, we’d gather together as we unboxed the decorations, taking it in turns to place our favourite baubles on the branches. The star, the most magical ornament of all, would be placed at the top by my Dad. The Christmas classics vinyl would be playing on our record player as we drank hot chocolate and prepared for the forthcoming festive season. These remain some of my fondest and most vivid memories. My parents kept that seasonal spirit alive for us throughout the pursuant weeks, ending in a crescendo on Christmas day. Gifts and games galore, sing alongs whilst my Dad played the guitar. As the night drew to a close my Mum would snuggle us up under a blanket before we went to bed. I wouldn’t trade these precious memories for anything. I’m aware how very fortunate I am. Nowadays Christmas remains a joyful time for us and over the years, we’ve gathered new loved ones and added even more traditions to our family repertoire. Charades is a Findlay family classic. And you can bet your bottom dollar Die Hard will feature at least once. In 2019 I experienced my worst Christmas. Dealing with a difficult diagnosis and having only received my cancer treatment plan hours before, I spent the day in a haze of champagne, anti-anxiety medication and shock. The year or two leading up to that Christmas, I’d been experimenting with long periods alcohol free. Once a proud owner of my party girl status, I’d been surprised by how freeing it felt to remove the booze and lean into other facets of myself. Parts of me that I’ve now come to realise alcohol had been concealing, or more perhaps more accurately, stealing.

The Literacy Lighthouse

the literacy lighthouse

London

Lighthouse Literacy Academy was created to meet the growing needs of San Diego’s East County families who are searching for a wonderful alternative to public school. We are a group of parents and educators with children between grades Transitional Kindergarten and 9th grade. We ourselves grew up in East County attending different elementary, Jr high and High schools around the community. We come with various backgrounds from college degrees to countless ECE classes. Some of us have a background in preschool education, some in homeschooling and some in primary education. Lighthouse Literacy Academy is a Christian school where children will experience God’s love in our morning Bible time and weekly chapel as well as throughout the week as we learn to love God and each other just as God commands us. We believe learning success is rooted in strong literacy. We believe that literacy is the foundation for all learning success, from the primary years, all through college and all of life. We believe a solid ability to read well gives tremendously to whether or not an individual will thrive throughout their lives. We believe that when a Pre-K student reads sight words or a Kindergartener reads 3-7 word sentences, when a first or second grader is reading full books they are paving their way to a bright future. At Lighthouse Literacy Academy each and every child will be a successful reader whether at grade level or beyond. When at Lighthouse Literacy Academy, a child has reached her or his grade level expectations we don't sit back and celebrate, we celebrate and begin the journey of even further progress, motivating, facilitating and supporting each and every child right where they are individually. Our small class sizes allow for one on one learning, community and collaboration. Math, Science, Social Science, Arts, Physical education are not secondary to literacy, but instead intertwined as we strongly believe anyone who can read-well-can learn anything! Lighthouse Literacy Academy is an extension of JUMP Preschool and Kindergarten. JUMP Preschool was established in 2008 for children ages 2 years to Transitional Kindergarten then in 2012 the kindergarten was added. Lighthouse Literacy Academy will have its first semester in January 2022 serving grades Transitional Kindergarten to third Grade.

BETTERING LIVES BY LEARNING TOGETHER…’ Orange Psychology makes a difference to the lives of children and young people by using a collaborative and relationship-focused approach. We learn through listening and we develop ideas together, because we believe that the ‘whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts’. Our psychologists (including clinical, educational, counselling and forensic), ensure that the whole picture of the child or young person is created, working together with others to co-construct our understanding. We work systemically, using psychological formulation to put together the many ‘segments’ which make up the whole child. The whole ethos of Orange Psychology is underpinned by our ‘core values’ or ‘our segments’ which are; O – Outcome Orientated R – Reflective and Relationship-focused A – Approachable and Accessible N – Needs-led service G – Genuine E – Empathetic and Embracing The Orange Psychology Service Delivery Model is built around collaborative practice and operationalises the values (above) in the following ways; As a collective team, we work in an outcomes focused way from the start of our involvement. We share our learning together to improve our own professional practice. Our communication is reflective, open, creative and collaborative with teachers, children, young people, teachers and other professionals Our flexibility and openness to new ideas means we can learn together to further improve the service we provide. We spend time planning and listening to you so that we can put into practice creative and flexible psychology services. Orange Psychology will respond and adapt to what those needs are, by listening and learning together. The authentic partnerships we create really can ‘better lives by learning together’. We embrace ideas with openness and compassion, meaning that our practitioners can bring together the many ‘segments’ that can make for a better ‘whole’. THE WAY WE WORK We have a growing number of school contracts across the North, including Greater Manchester areas, Lancashire, and Yorkshire. Our psychologists work hard to offer a good quality bespoke service to ensure maximum effectiveness. We are highly organised and driven by the need to help schools, families and young people; We operate 2 or 3 term contracts with our school clients, to offer maximum flexibility across the school year We can provide Records of Involvement and/or high quality reports to support multi agency working or formal statutory processes We always work with parents and schools to gather the ‘whole’ picture of the child.

Institute Of School Business Leadership

institute of school business leadership

Manchester

The Institute can trace its origins to informal gatherings amongst the earlier pioneers of state school business leadership over 40 years ago. As our education system has evolved, the education workforce has had to adapt. As schools continue to be afforded more local autonomy, and with it more direct accountability, the need for well-trained, qualified and competent school business professionals (SBPs) has become increasingly important in all school leadership structures. Between 2001 and 2012, the National College led a government-sponsored programme to develop thousands of SBPs. The coalition government favoured a move towards a sector-led, self-improving system, which signalled the end of National College SBP sponsored programmes. To continue the important SBP workforce professionalisation work initiated by the National College, in 2017 ISBL became a nationally recognised professional body by being granted the prestigious status of institute. Our role in the education system ISBL’s principal function is to provide all education stakeholders with confidence in the capability of school business professionals. In order to adequately serve our education system, this workforce needs to consist of technically competent, highly skilled and experienced practitioners. Here at ISBL, we set the benchmark for effective practice through sector-endorsed professional standards and provide development opportunities for our professional community and their institutions through a portfolio of quality-assured qualifications, training, resources, research and events. Helping secure a brighter future for our children: A blueprint for school business leadership practice This is a statement of ISBL’s intent, with effective school resource management at its core. It sets out our vision and commitment to supporting the ongoing development of a critical, fit-for-purpose workforce, along with the necessary steps towards equipping a cadre of professionals ready and able to support other school and trust leaders in responding to the complex challenges of our evolving education system. Download a copy of the ISBL blueprint here. How we influence policy ISBL aims to remain politically neutral. Using a non-partisan approach, we provide the Government with feedback from our community and a technical steer in areas of policy relevant to our expertise. In essence, we act as the conduit between policy and practice. We support all school business professionals We recognise the professional diversity that exists within the SBP community. In a mixed-economy education system, it is inevitable that there will be a variety of operating models – some very large and some much smaller. The structures that support these organisations will differ, as will levels of responsibility, accountability and complexity. It is therefore unsurprising that there are many versions of the SBP role. As an institute, it is our aim to develop and support practitioners at every stage of their career journey, whether they are an aspiring SBP, a practitioner in a standalone setting or indeed operating at an executive level across a number of schools.

We are always exploring ways of expanding our services and seeking new horizons through interesting and exciting product ranges. Sue Govani - Director of Gold Leaf Supplies Sue Govani Director Steve Rees - Director of Gold Leaf Supplies Steve Rees Director Company History Gold Leaf Supplies is a family business, which was established as Services Supply Company in 1973 by Mr Ken Rees who was a senior partner in the business. Although Ken retired in 2008, he still had an involvement in the Company until his peaceful passing in May 2018. Having worked in the Italian Marble business for many years, Ken initially set up the business to supply gold leaf and associated products to the stone trade. The main emphasis being on offering an exceptionally high level of service and personal contact. Since 1973, our client base has expanded and diversified considerably, and we have increased our product range accordingly to meet our clients’ needs. We now cater to a diversified range of National and International clients involved in gilding, signwriting, glass manufacture, bookbinding, furniture restoration and manufacture, framing, interiors, architectural decoration, specialist decorating and monumental carving to name but a few. You can view examples of the prestigious projects that we have supplied for in our client gallery As the emphasis of the business changed so did the Company trading name - to Gold Leaf Supplies. From 1st March 2008, we became a Limited Company - Services Supply Company Ltd T/A Gold Leaf Supplies. Although the product range has diversified, and the company has grown, the philosophy introduced in 1973 has remained the same - "We offer quality products at competitive prices and a continuing high level of service." The business remains within the family and Kens’ son, Steve Rees and daughter, Sue Govani joined the company in 1989 and 1991 respectively. Steve has a background in Business whilst Sue’s background is in Art and Design bringing different skills and ideas to the business. Both are Company Directors and very hands on with the day to day running of the business. Steve is mainly involved with the purchasing and logistics. He has a memory like a filing cabinet and a sound technical knowledge relating to gilding techniques. When he has any free time, you will find him on the ski slopes or out walking with his beloved dogs. Sue is more involved with the creative side of the business and enjoys the sales, marketing and client facing events. Passionate about artistic techniques and applications, Sue is usually found trying out the new product ranges in her spare time. She is learning to gild is spending a little more time being a hands on creative which she finds a very meditative process. We all have enormous respect for the art of gilding and its traditional values whilst at the same time recognise and are inspired by the many diverse and contemporary ways that gold and silver leaf is being used today. Our Team It is important to receive your raw materials on time and we appreciate the tight deadlines that most businesses work to, therefore for approved accounts, most of our products are despatched the day instructions are received and delivered on a next day delivery basis. Where large projects are involved, supplies can be scheduled on a phased delivery. One of our strengths is that we can and have often been called upon to supply large quantities at short notice. Our prime objective is not only to supply, but also to provide a full service to our clients and our team makes every effort to ensure this objective is achieved. We have knowledgeable staff who are always on hand to offer advice and we respond quickly to any enquiries that you may have. Please feel free to contact us at any time. Sue Jewell Accounts Manager Sue J has been with us for almost 15 years and has been instrumental in setting up all of our accounts and bookkeeping administration. Since October last year Sue decided to reduce her hours to work part time to fit around her grandchildren and has been working remotely since lockdown. Accounts practices come naturally to Sue and she is continuing to teach all the office staff her accounting methods. She is still very much involved with managing and overseeing the office systems and administration on a weekly basis remotely although she no longer has direct contact with clients. Niki Rathkey Accounts Administrator and Order Processing Niki has been with GLS for two years now and handles all our day-to-day accounts and order processing. It is a busy desk, but Niki is always on hand with a smile to answer any accounting queries that you may have. She is like a magpie when it comes to our shiny products and uses a lot of them in her stone painting and interior projects. She has also built up a sound knowledge about how our products work and will answer most queries related to this. Niki has a strong background of secretarial and administrative skills and has previously worked for a variety of Accounts practices. Isabel Barriga Brown Accounts Assistant and Order Processing Isabel is a new starter for GLS who joined us in October 2021 but has quickly become an indispensable member of the team. Together with Niki they are the accounts team that keep our day-to-day orders ticking over and our records straight! She is very creative and artistic and helps a lot with our social media ideas and creative projects. Again, Isabel loves trying out the projects in her own home and is also learning to gild. She’s our social secretary and makes sure we get together outside as well as inside of work. Adam Rees Technical and IT Adam has worked at Gold Leaf Supplies for around 10 years and during that time he has built up a very good technical knowledge about the products and their uses. He is happy to answer any technical questions that you may have. He is very patient and interested in the challenges that customers projects often present. He will always go out of his way to find a solution and is interested in testing new products and applications. Adam also has responsibility for the Website and all our internal IT requirements. Ralph Davies Warehouse Manager Ralph has been with GLS for over 8 years and takes care of all the goods inwards, stock control and order despatch. Ralph is meticulous and methodical which is a good thing in a busy warehouse. He runs a very tight and organised ship and is a real character! Nothing is ever too much trouble! He always goes the extra mile to make sure your orders are packed well and despatched on time. Fred Govani Warehouse Assistant Fred is Sue’s husband and since taking early retirement during lockdown he comes into the Company part time to help out in our busy warehouse. Due to his previous and extensive work experience he also has a valuable input into logistics and systems practices. Debbie Rees Colour sampling coordinator. Debbie is Steve’s wife who also runs an online homeware store called Elsie Boo Collections. She helps out at GLS by preparing all of our Gold leaf and other metallic materials shade cards that our clients find so useful to have in their workshops or to show their own customers to help them make colour decision choices. Debbie makes sure that we are all stocked up with these and also helps us keep on top of office filing.
