In 1968 at a meeting of the Parish Council of Aldingbourne it was agreed that there was a definite need to build a modern community centre to serve the village. 12 years later, and at a cost of £100,000,David Purley Aldingbourne Community Centre was completed. It was officially opened on 29th March 1980 by local racing driver David Purley the son of Charles Purley, the founder of LEC Refrigeration. The Centre is built on the playing fields originally managed by the Aldingbourne Sports Council. In 1972 the Sports Council formed the 200 Club to raise money for the project. Concise Construction Ltd of Barnham were given the contract and together with Mr Peter Lovett plans were drawn up. inside-hall-2 Planning permission was first granted in 1977 but was revised in 1978. With grants from the Department of the Environment, West Sussex County Council, Arun District Council the Association were all set to begin work. But it was not to be as straightforward as that. Problems arose concerning an access road and time ticked by. With the knowledge that if work didn’t start on site by a certain time they would lose their grants, the association pressed to reach an agreement. inside-bar-1 Eventually, in March 1979 an agreement was signed and work started immediately. The delay however, had cost the Association money. The original quote of £72,000 for the construction of the building no longer applied and the new cost was set up as £93,931.38p. By the time internal fittings, alarms and other equipment had been fitted the centre cost £100,000.

Baby Week is a registered charity and aims to bring sectors and services together to promote the best start in life. The initiative was inspired by Brazil’s ‘Semana do Bebe’ (UNICEF 2010), following a visit to the country by Churchill Fellow Lucy Potter. Leeds hosted the first English speaking Baby Week in 2016 and since has had interest from several other towns and cities wanting to host their own celebrations. Since Baby Week became a registered charity, Bradford, Hull, Wakefield, Cheshire and Merseyside have organised their very own take on Baby Week Leeds. In 2019, we were nominated and came in second place as charity of the year by The British Journal of Midwifery Practice Awards (BJM). Over the past six years, hundreds of citywide events have been held with thousands of attendees including parents, expectant parents, practitioners and professionals , and of course babies! Each city hosting the week has the opportunity to celebrate and bring together the work of maternity and early years services, helping to raise awareness of the critical developmental growth stages and a real focus on the 1001 days in order to give every baby the best start in life. Baby Week is organised with Child Friendly Leeds with partnerships involving NHS Leeds, Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Leeds Dads, Public Health, Mumbler, and many more partners across all sectors. To mark the 5 years in 2020, Baby Week Leeds focussed on five of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a focus over the next few years: Good Health and Wellbeing, Reduced Inequality, Sustainable cities and communities, Climate action and No Poverty.

From the Headteacher, Michael Scott May I extend a warm welcome to our website. Newport Girls’ High School offers an all-round education with considerable strengths both inside and beyond the classroom. We support students academically to achieve their potential, whilst also developing resilience and promoting emotional wellbeing. As a relatively small school, there is a real family-feel to NGHS and our house system affords students the chance to meet peers in other year groups and to participate in healthy competition in a wide range of disciplines. There is an extra-curricular activity to suit all tastes at NGHS and staff work exceptionally hard to provide these opportunities for our students. We also organise a number of key open events during the academic year and welcome visitors to see all that NGHS has to offer. Our curriculum is academically rigorous with all students studying two modern languages in KS3 and separate sciences at GCSE. Some students also study Further Maths as an additional equivalent GCSE. At A-level we offer a full range of subjects to enable progression to university, apprenticeship or employment. Significant support with UCAS applications is available to all. Our pastoral team, comprising both teaching Heads of Year, SENDCO and non-teaching support staff ensure that our students’ individual needs are met and we work closely with families and primary schools to ensure a smooth transfer from Year 6. Newport Girls’ High School was visited by Ofsted in October 2019 for a section 8 inspection. My name is Annette Barrett and I run Cook Stars Cardiff North & West. Contact Information: E: Annette@cookstars.co.uk T: 07367 070814 I am a qualified Home Economics teacher with over 30 years' experience of teaching food in secondary schools. Having taken early retirement, I am now ready for the new challenge of promoting the importance and love of cooking in the wider community and decided to join Cook Stars in order to further this goal. I just loved the name 'Cook Stars'. Cooking allows every child the opportunity to shine in their own unique way and I'm so excited to be running children's cooking classes. I instantly knew I needed to be involved in this business in order to create an abundance of 'stars' armed with essential life skills. Learning to cook is such an important life skill but unfortunately over the years less and less time has been given to this subject in the school curriculum and many children have not been able to experience what they should have. Cooking has never been more important than it is now with increased obesity rates, diabetes and other food related disorders. I am so excited to be able to contribute to improving a person's health and well-being through cooking. I am married with two children, both in their twenties. They have been away at university but still want to come home for some 'proper food'!! In my spare time I like to follow sport and I am a Cardiff City Season ticket holder. I also swim regularly and recently swam the length of the English Channel for charity. Holidaying somewhere hot is also a must!
