It’s inbuilt, so why not learn to use it to your advantage to turn ideas into actions and outcomes? We met at university at the tail end of the last millennium, on a theatre studies BA. Josh then worked with vulnerable adults for a housing association, whilst developing his skills as a storytelling performer in museums, festivals and schools. Lily continued post graduate studies at Central School of Speech and Drama and gained an MA at Goldsmiths, while devising theatre productions as a director. Our paths crossed again on a project with young actors in Mumbai where we discovered we enjoyed working together. On our return we started to deliver open storytelling workshops as a means to develop our product and explore its uses and applications. Initially, we thought storytelling was perfect for presentation skills and museum tours. Now we also use it to investigate and build understanding with individuals and in collaborative groups as well as to grow connections, values and relationships. Ben Joiner became one of the core team in 2014. We were drawn to his in-depth knowledge and expertise in voice and body-language and his gift to comfortably take people outside their comfort zone. Over the past couple of decades, we have honed our skills and our love of training and coaching. We have stayed curious, and use that curiosity to help us adapt and evolve how we use storytelling to the benefit of contemporary working life.

Amala (formerly known as Sky School) was conceived in 2017, in response to the gap in quality education provision for displaced youth. Our name is inspired by the Arabic word for hope, which our education embodies. We believe that young refugees - as all people - have a right to quality education. Yet, fewer than one in three refugees are able to complete their secondary education and only 6% are able to access higher education. In 2016, Amala co-founders Mia and Polly were working on a prestigious scholarship; the programme admitted refugees to schools around the world to complete their upper secondary education. They found that for every scholarship place available, hundreds of promising applicants were turned away. Their subsequent research showed that there were few educational opportunities available for refugee youth aged 16-25, many of whom are forced to drop out of educational systems due to the barriers they face. The idea for Amala was born: to provide transformational learning programmes for displaced youth and their host communities to improve their lives today and open up opportunities for the future. Amala has two key programmes: The Amala High School Diploma, the first high school diploma designed for and with refugee youth, and Changemaker Courses in areas such as Peace-building, Ethical Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship. Amala’s curriculum has been developed with the support of our educational partner UWC South East Asia, one of the largest international schools in the world with an expertise in values-based curriculum development, and led by UWCSEA’s former Director of Teaching and Learning Stuart MacAlpine, in collaboration with refugee youth and 150 educators. Amala learning focuses on the development of learner agency as well as competencies that enable learners to make change in their lives and communities. Amala learning is delivered through a blended learning model and in light of Covid-19 many courses have been adapted to an online model. Amala programmes are delivered both directly by Amala and in collaboration with partners whose missions are aligned to our own. Through collaborating with partners we have been able to bring transformational education to refugees in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe and Latin America. Begin2Sports was founded by sports coaching scientist and Commonwealth athlete Addy Mumunie. Born in Nigeria, sports came into her life through the necessity of running to school and back every day. However, it grew into her first love, achieving a regional level by the age of 12-13 and going on to represent Nigeria at Commonwealth/National level. Raising her family in Southwest London, sport and particularly athletics, were the bedrock of her life, raising her three daughters to also include sports into their life. One enjoys recreational sports, and the other two daughters compete as professional athletes at National and International level for England and GB. Coach Addy trained in Sport Coaching Science at St Mary’s University Twickenham. She went on to set up this community interest group (Begin2Sports) in 2017, with the goal to support people from disadvantaged backgrounds through sport and the 7 fundamental key principles of athletics. Coach Addy’s motivation for this project, came from her own humble beginnings. Challenged by Dyslexia, a misunderstood condition in the 1970’s, studying was very difficult. It was an unsupported experience and consequently personal progress was severely inhibited. It was then that she realised that taking part in sports, offered her the freedom, confidence, self-esteem, and self-expression that she needed to help overcome these challenges. Inspiring others to discover the benefits of sport in their lives was the spark that inspired Begin2Sports. At the heart of the group’s purpose is increasing sports participation in the community. We aim to provide individuals at a higher risk of sports deprivation in the London borough of Wandsworth, access to low-cost physical activity & fitness services. Uniquely, we also offer a blended physical and cognitive programme, known as Dysletics and GymLetics, designed specifically for those living with Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. WHO WE ARE We are a community focused organisation, that provide sports-based coaching built on values of OPENNESS, EMPOWERMENT, AND NUTURING. We aim to create a safe space for EVERYONE of any ability to experience new and exciting physical activities and sports. Our primary audience are children however we also have adult-based programmes as well as we aim to be as inclusive as possible. We speak simply. We present information clearly to our participants making sure that they take away the key information needed. Less is more. CoCo has a team of staff and volunteers dedicated to building confidence, self-esteem and support positive lifestyle changes in young people via the conduits of education, sport and culture. Our staff have a background in mentoring and life coaching, project management, social inclusion, vocational training, and sports coaching. Our community based values are manifested in our training activities in the classroom, and our team activities which take place in positive open spaces and parks around Brighton and Hove. CoCo works with a variety of local organisations and stakeholders to achieve its goals and deliver its activities. For example, we work directly with youth clubs, Job Centre Plus, and youth/employment networks (Brighton’s Women’s Centre, the Chamber of Commerce, Brighton and Hove Youth Collective, and The Platform) to engage directly with young people that are interested in career planning, job search, our vocational courses, or sport team building activities. We also have close ties with sports clubs such as Hassocks Tennis Club, Preston Park Tennis Club, Pavilion and Avenue Tennis Club, Preston Panthers FC, Withdean FC and Patcham FC. With these clubs we organise team building events, joint sports days and in house training to develop soft and employability skills via sport. Our team has worked with hundreds of young people across Sussex to provide vocational training, mentoring and employability training. Our reach is growing and in 2017 hope to reach even more young people. Specifically, our qualified staff provide VET courses such as City and Guilds Level 1 Principles of Coaching Sport, Level 1-2 Employability Skills and Level 2 Travel and Tourism Destinations. We also provide Coaching and Mentoring Sessions with a qualified life coach, cultural activities and overseas team sports tours in Europe. Our aim is to support young people not in employment, education or training, aged 18-24, early school leavers now long term unemployed, general unemployed young people, and we place special emphasis on the participation of young women and the more socially excluded members of society. We use our links with local colleges, the local authority, community groups and youth networks to support young people into vocational training, improve their confidence and support them into further vocational training, work experience or employment.
