Emma has trained senior leadership teams from Beko PLC, KBR Inc, Crown Worldwide, Turley, Saba UK and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Fund. Emma is committed to increasing capacity in the training sector, as this is currently a bottleneck for supporting the population to access climate emergency training, hence Lighthouse recently developed and certified a Carbon Literacy Train the Trainer course. Emma is an approachable and motivating trainer who uses her 25 years’ experience working with business to quickly cut through the challenges they face and give individual and bespoke attention to everyone she works with.

Have you heard the one about the Finance Director who said, ‘What if we spend money training our people, and then they leave?’. To which the CEO replies, ‘What if we don’t train our people and then they stay?’. Admittedly, it won’t get me a headline spot on Live at the Apollo, but it does point out something very important. Simply this, that ongoing training is very important. Even now. Especially now. An organisation should have learning and development written into its core values. The landscape of work is changing and people need to have skills that will help them navigate that tricky landscape. Time and again, growth and development opportunities are cited as chief motivators at work. This means not only formal training, but on the job development. Imagine a leader who has the courage to support a colleague to undertake a new project, something they’ve never done before and the success of which is unclear. Imagine a colleague who grasps that opportunity to innovate, knowing that there’s a steep learning curve ahead, but that their line manager has their back. Imagine this is your organisation and that both of those valuable people have taken their lead from you. It does take a leap of faith to invest in learning and development, especially of those soft skills. The word ‘soft’ doesn’t help, though, does it, and probably leaves that Finance Director, well-versed in Excel and complex accounting software (very ‘hard’), palpitating at the cost. Author Heather McGowan has relabelled the ‘soft’ skills as ‘uniquely human’ skills. That’s a rather splendid phrase. Unique and Human.

Community Motors CIC was a social enterprise, set up in 2014 by Elaine and Justin Cooper as a Community Interest Company, to meet two specific aims: To provide excellent motor vehicle services to the local community and to provide opportunities for young and disadvantaged people to train in useful vocational skills, in particular motor vehicle mechanics. We saw and wanted to address the career challenges of young people who are not ‘academic’, are probably not suited for University, and who are currently not well served by an education system which is primarily measured by – and hence values - academic results over practical and personal development. Therefore, starting from an empty industrial unit, and joined by Mark and Kevin, our Garage and Training Managers, we built an enterprise from scratch which aimed to deliver practical and ethical excellence in all we did. We provided clear and consistent services and advice to our customers and alongside that offered young people the chance to gain real-world experience and accredited training in a professional working environment, working and learning alongside motivated, talented motor vehicle technicians, many of whom had overcome their own struggles when growing up. We worked hard to run and build the organisation as well as we could, building relationships with local schools, colleges and pupil referral units, as well as many, many members of the community around us, who came to trust us with the safety and reliability of their vehicles. We won both local and national awards for the quality of our enterprise, and many positive reviews and testimonials from happy customers and trainees.

Originally focused on sharing online learning content amongst government bodies, we took that concept and built out the offer to enable performance improvement and modernisation. Hi there! I’m Karen Holmes, manager and owner of Play Academy. In the Summer of 2019, my life took a huge, exciting turn when I took on this wonderful club. Up until then, I had spent 20 years as a very happy & successful Primary School teacher. During my time as a teacher, I had the pleasure of working with many, many children across the primary age range. I also trained as a student mentor and worked alongside trainee teachers supporting & developing practice. In addition to this I was also responsible for the PSHE curriculum across the whole school, an area I am still massively passionate about. Whilst building my career as an educator, I was also bringing up my two gorgeous sons Toby & Zach. Because I was juggling being a mum with being a teacher, I fully understand the desire parents have for quality wrap around care for children; it’s something my husband and I accessed for our two lovely boys during their primary years. As my career progressed and opportunities were being put in front of me, I paused for a bit and realised that teaching was no longer for me. I was spending less and less time doing the things that had steered me into teaching in the first place; planning, creating & facilitating new and fun quality experiences for children. I wanted to get back to just having ‘fun’ with little people, blowing bubbles, building dens, playing boards games, enjoying the outdoors and most of all…….laughing! To allow children a comfortable, home from home space to practise being good citizens, develop key life skills and master the art of a two way conversation.

From the Headteacher, Michael Scott May I extend a warm welcome to our website. Newport Girls’ High School offers an all-round education with considerable strengths both inside and beyond the classroom. We support students academically to achieve their potential, whilst also developing resilience and promoting emotional wellbeing. As a relatively small school, there is a real family-feel to NGHS and our house system affords students the chance to meet peers in other year groups and to participate in healthy competition in a wide range of disciplines. There is an extra-curricular activity to suit all tastes at NGHS and staff work exceptionally hard to provide these opportunities for our students. We also organise a number of key open events during the academic year and welcome visitors to see all that NGHS has to offer. Our curriculum is academically rigorous with all students studying two modern languages in KS3 and separate sciences at GCSE. Some students also study Further Maths as an additional equivalent GCSE. At A-level we offer a full range of subjects to enable progression to university, apprenticeship or employment. Significant support with UCAS applications is available to all. Our pastoral team, comprising both teaching Heads of Year, SENDCO and non-teaching support staff ensure that our students’ individual needs are met and we work closely with families and primary schools to ensure a smooth transfer from Year 6. Newport Girls’ High School was visited by Ofsted in October 2019 for a section 8 inspection. We are delighted to have retained our outstanding status as a result of this visit under the revised Ofsted framework.
