In 1983 at a time of record high unemployment a group of local business leaders came together. Their vision? Create an organisation that would enable young people to develop the future skills they needed to obtain work and forge successful careers, while benefiting the community. This organisation became North Wales Training. It steadily grew, responding to local employment challenges. It built strong relationships with private and public sector partners. And it cultivated expert knowledge in the key skills people of the area needed to be successful in modern workplaces. Having already formed a work-based learning partnership with Coleg Llandrillo and Arfon Dwyfor Training Ltd, it was only natural for North Wales Training to partner with the emergent umbrella organisation Grŵp Llandrillo Menai (GLlM) when this was established in 2012. That the Grwp - the largest education provider in Wales - decided to acquire North Wales Training fully in 2018 is a testament to the reputation North Wales Training had earned itself. Highlanes Municipal Art Gallery opened its doors on October 4, 2006 and was the culmination of many years planning to deliver a dedicated visual art space for the Irish north east region, of an international standard in terms of design, management, environmental control and security. The gallery is sited in the former Drogheda Franciscan Church and part of the Friary; known locally as the ‘High Lane Church’. The Franciscans gifted the property to the people of Drogheda when they ended their 760 year association with the town in 2000. The buildings date from the early 19th century, though elements date back to earlier times and include the former Franciscan burial crypts. The main exhibition spaces are open plan and include the old Church level and a new floor at the height of the old balcony and as such, the character of the building is not lost. The Board of management raised over €4 million from international and local funding and donations. This was a major achievement for the town. As part of the development of the gallery the Board made a strategic decision to purchase much of the adjoining property a number of years ago, to enable it to plan for Highlanes Munipal Art Gallery’s long-term development. Much of this property has been incorporated in the development.

The Thomas Doran Training Centre, founded in 1960, has a long connection with the local community and over the years has undergone many changes but, now as Parkanaur College and Residential Care Home, retains the aim of providing learning opportunities for our service users, staff and others who spend time with us from local colleges and universities as part of their vocational and professional training. Parkanaur is registered with, and inspected by, the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority and is accredited with the Open College Network. We are a large employer and we support local businesses as part of our contribution to the local community.

I have been sewing for as long as I can remember, starting with making dolls clothes as a child, and later progressing onto dressmaking and then quilting. I attended courses and over the years have developed my own style and designs. My aim is to give this traditional craft a contemporary twist with the use of vibrant colours and bold designs. I make all the quilts myself in my home studio. I have a flair for combining colours to create a strong visual impact The inspiration for many of my designs comes from the countryside and creatures which surround me, from pecking chickens, frisking horses and buzzing bees to poppy fields and beautiful garden flowers. My quilts are exhibited at national craft fairs throughout the UK and have been featured in 'Country Living' and 'Aspire magazines'. They are shipped worldwide. Quilting Workshops... Would you like to spend a relaxing and stress free day or weekend? Would you like to learn to quilt? Come along to one of my quilting workshops, run regularly across Herefordshire and Wales. Féile an Phobail was established in 1988 as a direct response to the conflict in the north of Ireland. Its purpose was to celebrate the positive side of the community, its creativity, its energy, its passion for the arts, and for sport. It furthermore aimed to provide events and entertainment at a price that the majority of the community could afford. In August 1988 the first Féile opened with a relatively humble parade of floats, bands and GAA clubs walking in their club regalia to an open-air party in Dunville Park. Street parties were organised throughout the West. Door-to-door collections were made to fund day trips to the seaside for pensioners and outings for young people. Soon the street confrontations associated with the week around August 9th were displaced by a positive display of the community and its creativity. The August Féile has proved a resounding success, growing from strength to strength and inspiring other troubled areas to organise similar festivals. Our carnival parade routinely brings thousands of participants for a colourful, musical procession with specially-designed floats representing a chosen theme, dancers and children in costume and face masks. Féile an Phobail has grown from a one-week festival to being the largest community arts festival in Ireland with a year round programme of events.
