If you’re interested in sewing with us, read on for some class info! Guaranteed small class size of no more than six students so you get all the help you need. Classes are in person and take place in our Dublin 8 studio. All of our courses are suited to both beginners and intermediates as these classes are taught by individual attention, working on your own project in your own time and pace. We provide the sewing machines and supply everything you need to get you started with your first beginner’s project. If there is a project you want to work on you will need to bring all materials, patternwork and requirements of your pattern eg thread, notions, zips etc. If you’re attending as a beginner, you will learn basic machine functions, practice threading the machine and make a small stitch sampler. You will be shown how to insert a zip and make a small bag. Improvers, we can work with you on any project you may need guidance with. From alterations, cushion covers, upcycling vintage clothing, cosplay, cloning your favourite garment or learning how to make your own clothes, we can cover it all. We have a beautiful, bright, studio for you to learn in. There is a lovely sense of community in class, because the group size is small, you get lots of attention in a friendly, relaxed environment. All of our machines are new and easy to learn on. There is also an overlocker for student use and we provide basic sewing kit for you to use. This is a two hour class, from 6pm-8pm, once a week on the same evening each week, for three weeks consecutively. Course fee; €95 When booking a course, please check your dates carefully you must be able to attend all three dates, no refunds once booked. Missed sessions, for ANY reason, cannot be made up, transferred, carried over, refunded or credited. Class availability is extremely limited due to a backlog from the prolonged studio closure and and unfortunately we can only accept a small amount of students per session. However we are not offering such appointments during Covid-19 restrictions. Is my booking transferrable? Your course enrollment can only be used for the dates booked, but you can transfer it into someone else’s name if you can’t make it – just let us know before they attend. What is the cancellation policy? Unfortunately, if for any reason you cannot attend the classes on the date you are booked for, we cannot reschedule it to a new date and there is no refund on classes and workshops. Please make sure that you, or the person you are booking for, can attend before booking a class with us. If you are unable to attend the classes you can give your place to your friend or family member. Founded in 2005, GymFun Gymnastics Club began as a Newtownabbey based Gymnastics Club specialising in recreational gymnastics. We work in partnership with Ulster University and are based at the Jordanstown Campus. We provide fun-filled classes, training, participation and performance opportunities for boys, girls, teenagers and young adults of all abilities. The name GymFun reflects our approach to the sport of gymnastics. Our motto is ‘Serious Smiles' which captures the spirit of all of our activities. We focus on developing children's fundamental movement skills and confidence through a positive and FUN environment. We believe that all children can benefit from postitive gymnastics experiences and that this can help them develop the physical literacy needed for an active life. We fully subscribe to the belief that gymnastics is to sport and physical activity as the alphabet is to reading. We therefore emphasise the mastery of gymnastics skills rather than competitive success. It is our belief that all children, regardless of ability, should be provided with an enjoyable, high quality, recreational gymnastics experiences to enable them to achieve their potential. We strive to ensure our classes are run to the highest standards and we are constantly evolving our programme. Our Membership GymFun Jordanstown is one of the largest recreational gymnastics club in the Newtownabbey. In our Jordantown classes we have over 450 GymFunners training with us every week! Our members include primary and post primary boys and girls of all abilities. Most members attend once a week for a one hour class. Some members train up to 2.5 hours per week. Gymnasts progress, at their own pace, through 4 levels (Enjoy - Learn, Perform, Master) of the GymFun programme . As our members get older we work closely with them to plan and structure sessions that will meet their motivations and needs. Many of our teenage gymnasts are also training as GymFun Leaders through membership of our Young Leaders Academy Quality Marks At GymFun Gymnastics Club, in keeping with our 'Serious Smiles' approach, we believe in providing professional recreational gymnastics provision and strive to ensure that our member's gymnastics experiences are as positive and happy as they can be. Our mission statement truly represents who we are as a company. All our instructors are passionate about karate and believe in a simple motto. Our motto is simple ‘Karate for all’. Everyone has the right to learn Karate in a fun and safe atmosphere for all. Below you can read our mission statement in greater detal. Promoting The True Traditions of Martial Arts What is the true meaning of Martial Arts? This is quite a complex topic. It is a sad fact that over the years many Martial Art systems, whether it is Japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc… have become seriously diluted in order to make things easier for their students for the pure purpose of making money, or these systems have been diluted by individuals removing a lot of content and only teaching things that mattered to them. What these individuals forget is that their system had a foundation from which they learnt. By removing that foundation, their students train missing some of the important content, without the whole knowledge. When the student becomes an instructor, then they do the same and thus over the years Martial Arts such as Karate, Judo, Wing Chuan etc, become diluted and knowledge is then lost. We, at the Ju Dachi Martial Arts Association believe in preserving the true traditions, techniques and their meanings. This is why it takes at least 4 to 5 years to achieve 1st Dan Black Belt. We are very proud that we are preserving this knowledge and developing our systems to be effective in the real world, while never forgetting the foundations taught, and the history and origin of the martial art. Teaching In A Non Political Manner We only care about training and learning the true meanings of martial arts. We leave all the politics outside the Do Jo and concentrate on the training, learning, mastering ourselves and our students. Did you know that the only reason Karate is not in the Olympics is because there are so many organisations, and they are too divided? Our approach is simple, we teach martial arts in a traditional manner and with a practical approach for today’s day and age. We are just happy with you training at our school and being part of our martial arts family. We leave all the silly, childish bickering and debate outside the Dojo, and we always encourage our students to try and learn any other martial arts. We also open our doors to other associations, such as RKAGB, who occasionally run courses for us. Equal Opportunities For All All our students are given fair opportunities regardless of background, religion, race, sex or age. In our school of Martial Arts, all our students are taught and treated as individuals. Children learn in a fun, caring and safe atmosphere, as well as our adult students. We’re a group of migrant women based in East Glasgow and together we’re creating a vibrant, female-led collective based around our favourite thing: food! By swapping recipes, ideas and skills, we’re making women’s lives brighter. Our not-for-profit organisation brings together women from all over the world, ending social isolation and empowering them to develop their talents- in the kitchen and beyond. 1. WE ARE A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE When we say ‘not-for-profit’, we mean just that! We believe that making a difference to people’s lives is more important than making money. Soul Food Sisters’ role is to empower migrant women in the local community to start their own businesses, encourage their abilities and increase confidence. That’s much more valuable than a fistful of tenners. 2. IT’S A LEARNING CURVE Sharing skills is a big deal for us. We are paid a flat rate and we all work together, which can mean anything from peeling bags of spuds to attending high-flying business meetings. By learning from each other, we can become stronger and more powerful together. 3. WE ARE ALL WOMEN We are built on the idea of sisterhood, so Soul Food Sisters is a women-only workers co-op, open to females from diverse backgrounds who love to cook. (Sorry, guys!). But if you’re female and you’d like to join our collective, get in contact as we would love to hear from you. If you work with us for a while, you could be offered membership to the co-operative. 4. EVERYTHING WE GET, WE PUT BACK IN Soul Food Sisters have an appetite for making great food, but when it comes to business, we’re not greedy. Any surplus cash after paying wages goes straight back into the collective. Also our assets are locked, so in the unlikely event we go bankrupt, nobody will be allowed to go home with the soup urns or chopping boards! 5. WE ARE A DEMOCRACY All the women in the Soul Food Sisters collective get a fair share and a listening ear. We make all our decisions by consensus, which isn’t always the quickest way, or the easiest. But consensus means that everyone is treated with respect and that we genuinely make decisions as a unified group. Every single one of us has equal ownership. 6. WE ARE ETHICAL To us, having a clear conscience is just as important as having a clean kitchen. We source ethical ingredients wherever possible and support other co-ops, making sure to buy our food locally. Of course, sometimes there are ingredients - like rice paper, for example - that we have to go further afield to find! But ethically sourced food is our utmost priority. 7. WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF FOOD We believe that food has the power to bring people together. By harnessing the spirit of Glasgow and it’s culturally diverse and fascinating communities, we provide food that celebrates diversity and for people of all cultures to enjoy together. 8. WE ARE SMART LADIES FROM ALL OVER THE GLOBE At the moment, Soul Food Sisters is made up of eight women from 5 different continents. Criminals have been breaking into Balsall Heath City Farm to steal the animals. This is upsetting for the staff and volunteers who look after them, at this much loved family learning facility (open daily). Donations are being collected through crowd funding to make the site secure, so together we can stop the abuse. But it will take every vote, to get over the threshold. Funding has been attracted by Retrofit Balsall Heath for up to 700 homes. Deadline for return of applications is Wednesday 23 November . Delays and even disappointments are possible with a free scheme, but “if you don’t ask, you dont get”. There’s no household income cap, or requirement to be on benefits, but the scheme is for older homes with poor energy rating (D,E,F,G EPCs). The scheme is completely free for eligible owner-occupiers. Private landlords need to pay a one-third contribution. A 3-page form needs to be filled in by the resident to apply and agree for a surveyor to visit. These can be got from BH Library, Baths, BH Children’s Centre, Jericho Foundation. If enough people vote Yes, the new council will be set up and the councilors recruited. They will then draw up a plan and a budget and set the “precept” (a small charge) to pay running costs. There is a new webpage that tells people more about the case for setting up this new structure, separate from Birmingham City Council, (but working with it of course) to power up our ability to solve problems, find opportunities and get communication and coordination working in our complex and multicultural neighbourhood.
